A Meta-Synthesis of Adolescent Psychological Help-Seeking

Barnes, Karen 01 January 2019 (has links)
Although adolescents experience psychological difficulty at a rate higher than any other age group, most do not get the support they need. The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions about barriers, facilitating factors, and help-seeking preferences for psychological support among adolescents. This study involved Best, Gil-Rodriguez, Manktelow, and Taylor’s conceptual framework pathways to online help-seeking to help explain adolescents’ perceptions of factors that influence them seeking support as well as identify pathways for support. A qualitative meta-synthesis design was used to synthesize findings of individual qualitative studies into themes around the central phenomenon of adolescent help-seeking. Data were collected by conducting an exhaustive literature review that initially identified 634 potential records, 16 of which met the specific inclusion criteria. The findings of this study indicate that adolescents identify 2 distinct pathways for support: formal and informal sources. Adolescents in the studies identified preferred informal sources of support as family (most often mothers), and school personnel (most often teachers), and most did not see formal sources as a viable option. Trust emerged as a primary factor in who, if anyone, adolescents chose to seek emotional support from. Other indicators of help-seeking included self-reliance, mental health literacy, stigma, and helper characteristics. Social change implications of this study include encouraging opportunities for schools to promote help-seeking by increasing mental health literacy for both students and staff and collaborating with families and professionals to promote transition to formal services.

Följsam eller utmanande : en kvalitativ studie om professionella behandlares arbete med psykisk ohälsa hos män och maskulinitet / Compliant or challenging : a qualitative study of professional practitioners work with mental illness among men and masculinity

Asklund Nilsson, Sebastian, Carlsson, Gustav January 2020 (has links)
Men are more likely than women to commit suicide and more reluctant to seek professional help when experiencing any type of mental illness. By interviewing six professionals, working as clinical psychologists or counsellors this study aimed to examine their experiences and attitudes concerning masculinity and mental illness among men. The material was examined through a thematic analysis which resulted in four different themes, each responding to the aim of the study from different angles. All participants strive not to differentiate between clients depending on their sex, yet it is widely held that masculine norms restrain men from seeking help from our current health services. This derives from the notion that traditionally masculine virtues such as stoicism and resilience are not compatible with vulnerability which is commonly associated with mental health services. Thus, there is a widespread attitude that traditional masculine norms should be challenged as a means to support men’s mental health. This study suggests that an excessive challenging approach legitimates the current constitution of mental health services which could restrain health services and other decision-makers responsiveness of men’s preferences and needs. To address the problem of mental illness and high rates of suicide among men, the challenging approach needs to be accompanied with compliance and adjustment after the needs and preferences of men.

Academic Help Seeking of Undergraduate STEM Students: A Basic Psychological Needs Theory Perspective

Hyejeong Oh (9192056) 31 July 2020 (has links)

This study aimed to investigate how the satisfaction and frustration of 776 undergraduate STEM majors’ basic psychological needs were related to their help seeking in a difficult course. It also identified the factor structures of adapted measures of academic help seeking and basic psychological needs. Factor analyses indicated that academic help seeking showed a 4-factor structure (adaptive, expedient, avoidant), with adaptive help seeking further distinguished based on the two sources (from the instructor/TA and from peers). Basic psychological needs exhibited an 8-factor structure, differentiated by whether each need (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) was satisfied or frustrated; relatedness satisfaction and frustration were also each differentiated by source (instructor/TA and peers). Psychological need satisfaction explained the data better than need frustration did in terms of both main effects and interaction effects. Interaction effects demonstrated that one psychological need was associated with academic help seeking through being moderated by another need or moderating a relation between another need and academic help seeking. Particularly, psychological need satisfaction showed some synergistic effects in that associations between one need satisfaction and academic help seeking were stronger when another need satisfaction was met. Implications for university educators, limitations, and directions for the future study were discussed.

Problematic gaming habits, perceived stigma and help-seeking behavior among gamers / Problematiska spelvanor, upplevt stigma och hjälpsökande beteende hos datorspelare

Kato, Brigitta Andrea, Derman, Lisa January 2020 (has links)
Exaggerated gaming is a rising issue both in Sweden and internationally that has a negative effect on many lives. It can be a cause of isolation which leads to various social consequences. It can cause economic problems due to large amounts of money being spent on games or in-game purchases or because of prioritizing gaming before going to work or studying. Excessive gaming has been categorized as a disorder/addiction since mid-2018 by the World Health Organisation based on reviews done on the available evidence and consensus among experts from different disciplines. However, there are not a lot of studies regarding the kind of help that is available as well as how likely those that have gaming disorder seek help nor are there many studies about stigma around the phenomenon. The aim of our study was to investigate if perceived stigma has any effect on whether or not and to what extent people who have problematic gaming habits decide to seek help as well as where they turn, should they have gaming disorder. We also want to see if problematic gaming habits increase the level of perceived stigma. Our hypotheses were therefore the following: H1: the more someone’s gaming habits are close to those of someone with a gaming disorder, the higher the perceived stigma becomes around the phenomenon. H2: the greater the perceived stigma is, the less likely a person is to seek help for their problem H3: the greater the perceived stigma, the less likely a person is to turn to professionals for help. We constructed a survey and distributed it on forums that discuss gaming related issues hoping to reach as many gamers as possible and we got a total of 177 responses. After having done the analysis in SPSS, our result showed that there was a weak positive correlation between problematic gaming habits and perceived stigma. We also found that the level of perceived stigma did not influence whether they would seek help or not. When it came to seeking help from professionals, we found statistically significant data relating to stigma and seeking professional help in that the higher the perceived stigma was, the more likely the individual was to seek professional help.

Sexual Assault and Online Help Seeking: An Analysis of Survivor Disclosure and Questions After Assault

Sagers, Abby Luthi 04 August 2020 (has links)
Sexual assault is a pandemic issue that affects millions worldwide. In the U.S. it is estimated that one in five women and one in 38 men will be victims of rape or attempted rape at some point in their lifetime (Smith et al., 2018). Sexual assault has several significant long-term effects, including negatively impacting survivors’ psychological, emotional, physical, and interpersonal well-being. After a trauma from sexual victimization, survivors face the difficult process of making sense out of what happened, what to do about it, and whether to disclose the experience to others. Reporting, whether formally or informally, can be extremely difficult for survivors, and may even deepen the pain of the experience depending on the response to such a disclosure. However, studies indicate that help-seeking and disclosure are beneficial for the physical and emotional health of the survivor. In this era of social media, many survivors turn to supportive online communities to disclose and/or seek help following their sexual trauma. This study focused on online discussions of sexual violence as shared on reddit, a social media website centered on member discussion and content sharing. The purpose of this study was to examine subreddit forums on rape and sexual assault to identify what issues were shared and what questions were asked by sexual assault survivors following their victimization. Specifically, the research questions included, 1) What types of issues are survivors choosing to share online after assault? And 2) What questions do they ask, and support do they seek from the online community after an assault? Around 300 posts on rape and sexual assault subreddits were analyzed using constructivist grounded theory methodology (Charmaz, 2014). Results suggest that reddit users posted to determine whether their experiences were abusive, to seek help, and to share their stories and seek a supportive witness from the online community.

We Need to Talk: A Qualitative Inquiry into Pathways to Care for Young Men at Ultra-High Risk for Psychosis

Åmlid, Håkon Olav January 2021 (has links)
A modern conceptualization of psychotic disorders is as neurodevelopmental disorders, with different stages characterized by discrete clusters of symptoms. This conceptualization includes a stage of pre-psychotic prodrome, a target of contemporary research as an attempt to intervene before the development of psychosis. However, these at-risk individuals rarely present to the mental health services before transitioning into psychosis, even more so for male patients. In this study, a method of inductive thematic analysis has been employed to inquire into the pathways to care for young men at Ultra-High Risk (UHR) for psychosis to gain knowledge of- and generate hypotheses about pathways to care for this group. Data was collected using semi-structured interviews (n = 9) over video conference or telephone. Three core-themes were developed as “Willingness to Disclose Distress”, “The Gatekeeping Confidant”, and “The Boiler”, with “Openness” as a core organizing category permeating the core-themes. Together, the themes represent findings on both the importance of relations in help-seeking, as well as how the young men commonly employ non-disclosure, and how this lack of openness delays pathways to care, often resulting in adversities for the participants. Findings provide implications for further inquiry into how to increase the likelihood of young men to disclose distress, as well as providing additional rationale for the development of Mental Health Literacy in the public to make peers as well as participants more able to recognize symptoms of the pre-psychotic prodrome, when, where and how to seek help.
