On Naming and Knowing Plants: Botanical Latin from Pliny the Elder to Otto Brunfels’ 1530 Herbarum Vivae EiconesPetrella, Erin January 2023 (has links)
In 1530, a German physician named Otto Brunfels published an herbal entitled Herbarum Vivae Eicones (Living Images of Herbs). In it, he planned to map the names of medicinal herbs known in and native to Germany onto their Greek and Latin names. Brunfels’ audience included fellow physicians and in order to assist with the identification of the herbs in his book, his publisher employed a woodcut artist to produce realistic images of them, a novelty in the genre of printed herbals. Over time, Brunfels’ work was superseded by 16th-century botanists and his legacy was relegated to the illustrations of his herbs, while his contributions to the naming and description of them were dismissed as unoriginal. However, a closer examination reveals Brunfels’ herbal as a transitional text bridging the gap between the herbal tradition and the development of the science of botany.
In addition to citing Pliny the Elder as his primary authoritative influence, Brunfels also references a number of 15th-century Italian humanist scholars who were neither botanists nor physicians, but who were known for their critiques of the early printed editions of Pliny’s Historia Naturalis and even of Pliny himself as a natural history authority. Thus, Brunfels’ herbal is tied to the manuscript and printing history of Pliny and to humanist attempts to correct and stabilize his text. Moreover, in the course of his work, Brunfels encountered a number of herbs that were known to him, but whose Latin and Greek nomenclature he could not accurately identify. As a result, he was forced to describe in his own words, in original Latin, these herbae nudae with German nomenclature but with unknown Greek and Latin names.
In addition, Brunfels encounters considerable disagreement among the ancient authorities about the naming and classification of other herbs and he is again forced to insert his own opinion, which he calls iudicium nostrum. I argue that Brunfels’ original Latin is a very early example of what would eventually become formal botanical Latin. Brunfels’ herbal is situated in such a way that it looks backward whilst simultaneously looking forward. It is an object of reception, appropriating terminology and methods from Pliny the Elder and from the humanist scholars who debated the quality of the printed editions of his work and the accuracy of the information provided in it. It is simultaneously the subject of reception, demonstrating a halting, hesitant vocabulary and style of Latinity that would eventually come to be identified with botany as a discipline.
Chapter 1 addresses Pliny’s ideas of what constitutes knowledge (cognitio) about plants in the Historia Naturalis, via his arguments against improper nomenclature (nomina nuda) and the alignment of herbal medicine with magic (magicae herbae). Pliny’s advocacy for proper methodology (experience over book learning) is also examined. Chapter 2 turns to the manuscript tradition of Pliny’s text and the first two printed editions, in 1469 and 1470, which were corrupt and resulted in an unstable, inaccurate text.
In Chapter 3, the reactions of the Italian humanists to these early printed editions are considered, along with the transition from critiques of the editors and printers to debates about inaccuracies that can be traced to Pliny himself. Chapter 4 turns to Otto Brunfels and traces his reliance on Pliny as well as on the Italian humanists, especially Ermolao Barbaro, who claimed to “heal” the errors in Pliny and stabilized his text. Brunfels’ original descriptions of herbs are also discussed. In the conclusion, Brunfels’ work is compared with that of botanists who postdated him, including Leonhard Fuchs, Kaspar Bauhin, and Karl Linnaeus.

Eighty-two patients with breast cancer, twenty-seven patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and sixty-five patients with rheumatoid arthritis in this study were selected based on voluntary, randomization and double blind grouping criteria. / In nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients, the decrease in percentage and the absolute count of T lymphocytes in the TCM group was significantly lower than those in the placebo group. Besides, the decrease of the absolute count of T helper and T suppressor in the TCM group was significantly lower than that in the placebo group (all p < 0.05). The decrease may be due to radiotherapy. However, there was no significant difference in plasma sIL-2R and soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor 2 (sTNFR2) between the TCM group and the placebo group. / In rheumatoid arthritis patients, there was no significant difference in plasma. C-reactive protein (CRP), in the percentage, absolute count, and the ratio of CD4+/CD8+/NK/B lymphocytes between the TCM group and the placebo group. / Results showed that the absolute count of T helper lymphocytes (CD4+), the ratio of T helper lymphocytes (CD4+)/T suppressor and cytotoxic lymphocytes (CD8+), and the percentage and the absolute count of B lymphocytes were significantly elevated in the patients with breast cancer after taking Yunzhi-Danshen capsules, while plasma soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) concentration was significantly decreased (all p < 0.05). / This study shows that the selected traditional Chinese medicine have determinable immunomodulatory effects in patients with cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality in Hong Kong and lack of selectivity has limited the success of conventional chemotherapy. Given the recent interest in the anti-cancer effects of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), there are two approaches to studying its bioactivity: as a mixture of ingredients or as single compounds. The objective of the present study is to examine the anti-tumor effects of Angelicae Sinensis Radix (DG) and Garcinia hanburyi resin (TH) using both approaches, respectively, as they are traditionally used to treat inflammation. In the present study, their anti-cancer effects and the mechanisms of actions were examined for the development of potential novel chemotherapeutic drugs for colon cancer since inflammation is a predisposing factor for colon cancer. / DG extract and its three main bioactive phtbalides: n-butylidenephthalide, senkyunolide A and z-ligustilide (LGT), were found to be cytotoxic to HT-29 cells with IC50 values (24 h) of 20.70 +/- 0.85, 72.51 +/- 8.65, 18.74 +/- 1.14 and 41.98 +/- 3.64 mug/ml, respectively. The results evidenced that LGT induced G0/G 1 arrest and apoptosis, triggering cleavage of PARP, pro-caspases-3, -8 and -9 and nuclear fragmentation. LGT and cisplatin synergistically reduced the viability of HT-29 cells. More interestingly, DG extract was more potent than individual phthalides, suggesting that there are other bioactive components and/or synergistic interactions. / Individual compounds purified from TH were investigated because gambogic acid isolated from this herb has been used clinically to treat cancer, 30-Epicambogin (EPC) and guttiferone K (GUTK) showed the highest cytotoxic selectivity and potency on HT-29 cells among 15 isolated compounds. IC50 values (24 h) for EPC and GUTK in HT-29 cells were 5.36+/-0.25 and 5.39+/-0.22 muM, respectively, and both induced G0/G1 arrest by down-regulation of cyclins D1, D3, CDK4 and CDK6, while up-regulation of p21Waf1/CiP1 and p27KiP1. Both compounds triggered the activation of caspases-3, -8 and -9 in apoptosis. The in vivo anti-tumor effects of GUTK were further investigated by using a subcutaneous Colon-26 mouse tumor model. GUTK (10 mg/kg i.p.) reduced tumor volume by 33.6% and potentiated the anti-tumor effects of 5-fluorouracil when administered concurrently. / Our findings revealed that DG rather than individual phthalides, is worthy for further study as a potential anti-cancer drug, due to the synergistic interactions among multi-components in the herb. On the other hand, EPC and GUTK, isolated from TH have potential to be developed as novel anti-tumor candidates for combination use with 5-fluorouracil. The results strongly support the use of different approaches to study TCM for chemotherapy, according to its traditional and empirical use. / Subsequently, the anti-proliferative effects of DG and Chuanxiong Rhizoma (CX) extracts and mixtures containing three phthalides in the proportions similar to their presence in both extracts were examined, since CX also contains the same phthalides, but in different proportions. (Botany) / A few poorly studied Cape herbal medicinal plants of historic and potential commercial interest which form part of the traditional medicine system of the Cape Region have been selected for this study. These are Centella glabrata L., Olea europaea L. subsp. africana (Mill.), Rafnia amplexicaulis (L.) Thunb. and Tulbaghia alliacea L.f. Centella C. asiatica is mainly used to treat skin conditions and wounds, tuberculosis and coughs and cooked and eaten as a vegetable in South Africa. The treatment of heartburn in the Wild Coast is a recent record. Decoctions of the leaves and stalks of C. glabrata were used for treating diarrhea and dysentery by the early Cape settlers. C. stenophylla or “klipdagga” is used in the treatment of high blood pressure and diabetes in the Still Bay area. This is also a recent new record. The anatomy of the few Centella species studied differed dramatically both in the leaf lamina and the petiole and could be used to differentiate between the species studied. A wider study would be very interesting and could be useful to distinguish between the species. This could have great potential as the ca. 45 species of Centella are often very difficult to distinguish from one another.

Herbal remedies are commonly used in developing countries for the treatment of various diseases, including constipation. The rationale for utilizing medicinal plants for the treatment of diseases rested largely on the belief that they are safe and free of side effects. However, there is limited scientific evidence on the safety and efficacy of these herbal medicines to back up their continued therapeutic application. Aloe ferox Mill. (Aspodelaceae), known as Cape aloe, locally called ikhala is a medicinal plant used by the people of the Eastern Cape Province for the treatment of gastrointestinal problems and constipation. The plant is a perennial shrub with thick succulent leaves bearing brown thorns on the margin and bright orange flowers arranged in oval lanceolate. It occurs in all weather in bush veld, road side, gardens and undisturbed places. According to the ethnomedicinal information, A. ferox is used as purgative. This research project was therefore designed to evaluate its ability in the treatment of constipation and to investigate its possible toxicological property. At the beginning of this programme, a survey of plants used for the treatment of constipation in Nkonkobe Municipality of the Eastern Cape Province was carried out using a questionnaire, which was administered to herbalists, traditional healers and rural dwellers. The study revealed 10 plant species from 8 families that are used for the treatment of constipation in the province. Four plants, Aloe ferox Mill, Boophone distischa L.f Herb, Alepidea amatybica Eckl and Artemisia afra Jacq, were repeatedly mentioned. Based on the frequency of usage, perceived efficacy and availability to the rural dwellers and the traditional healers, Aloe ferox was the most commonly used of the plants for the treatment of constipation. The plant was thus, chosen for the study. The invivo laxative effect of the aqueous extract of Aloe ferox in the treatment of loperamide-induced constipation in Wistar rats was investigated at varying concentrations. The leaf extract at all the dosages investigated (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight) improved intestinal motility, increased fecal volume and normalized body weight in the constipated rats. This was an indication of its laxative properties. However, the laxative property of the herb at 200 mg/kg body weight of the extract showed best efficacy and compares favourably well with senokot, a standard laxative drug. These findings have therefore, lent scientific credence to the folkloric use of the herb by the people of the Eastern Cape of South Africa as a laxative agent. Toxicological evaluation of aqueous leaf extract of Aloe ferox in loperamide-induced constipation was studied at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight. The oral administration of the extracts did not show any significant effect on the liver and kidney body weight ratios as well as the kidney and liver function indices. The extracts, at all the dosages investigated, did not alter the levels of creatinine, uric acid, urea, calcium and potassium ions. Similarly, the levels of total protein, albumin, bilirubin and gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) were not significantly different from the control. The plant extract appreciably normalized the elevated activities of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) in the untreated constipated rats following treatment with the extract. The extract did not show a significant effect on the hematological parameters except for the increase in the lymphocyte count in the untreated constipated rats, which was attenuated after administering the herb. ThThe available evidence in this study suggests that A. ferox may be safe as an oral remedy for constipation. Generally, the effect of the extract compared favourably well with senokot, a recommended drug for the treatment of constipation. The antioxidant activities against 1, 1 diphenyl- 2 picrylhydrazl (DPPH), 2,2’ – azinobis [3- ethylbenzothiazoline -6- sulfonic acid] diammonium salt (ABTS), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), Nitric oxide (NO), lipid peroxidation and the ferric reducing agents were investigated spectrophotometrically. Alkaloids, saponins, tannins, total phenols, flavonoids, flavonols and proanthocyanidin were also determined to assess their effects on the antioxidants activity of this plant. The phytochemical content of the ethanol and acetone extracts were consistently high compared to other solvents extracts. The level of tannins was not significant (P > 0.05) as compared with other solvent extracts. The free radical scavenging activity of the extracts was high even at lower concentrations (0.025 mg/ml) except in DPPH and lipid peroxidation. The ferric reducing potential of the extracts was concentration dependent and significantly different from Vitamin C and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) that were used as standard drugs. The present study showed a high level of scavenging activity of the leaf extracts of Aloe ferox in all the solvent extracts. Both ethanol and methanolic extract showed potent antioxidant activities than acetone and aqueous extracts. The study indicated that the leaf extracts of Aloe ferox might be a valuable source of natural antioxidant for both medicine and food industries. A. ferox leaf consists of the gel, latex and mesophyll layer; however, the main active constituents of the latex and the leaf exudate of Aloe ferox are anthraquinones which are believed to be responsible for the laxative property. The laxative compound in Aloe ferox leaf extract was isolated and characterized by extracting the plant material in methanol and extract suspended in distilled water. Partitioning was done with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and butanol respectively and was co-spotted with the over-the-counter (OTC) laxative drugs. This led to the successive column chromatography and thin layer chromatography (TLC) of the most active ethyl acetate fraction on silica gel with benzene/ethanol/ammonia hydroxide (BEA: 90:10:1), ethyl acetate/methanol/water (EMW: 40:5.4:5) and chloroform/ethyl acetate/formic acid (CEF: 50:40:10) as the mobile phase. The successive chromatograph and TLC afforded two compounds of Rf 0.420 (blue) and 0.831 (yellow) with the over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. These compounds were not totally elucidated due to their small quantity and instability. However, hydroxyl (OH) and carboxyl groups (COOH) was established as common to the extracted compounds, which might be responsible for the biological activity recorded for the plant extract.

Bioactivity and phytochemical analysis of Hydnora Africana on some selected bacterial pathogensNethathe, Bono Bianca January 2011 (has links)
Abstract Medicinal plants have been for long remedies for human diseases because they contain components of therapeutic value. The growing problem of antibiotic resistance by organisms demands the search for novel compounds from plant based sources. The present study was aimed at evaluating the bioactivity and phytochemical analysis of Hydnora africana on clinical and standard strains of Helicobacter pylori (PE 252C and ATCC 43526), Aeromonas hydrophila ATCC 35654, and Staphylococcus aureus NCT 6571 in an effort to identify potential sources of cheap starting materials for the synthesis of new drugs against these strains. Ethyl acetate, acetone, ethanol, methanol, and water crude extracts of H. africana were screened for activity against the test organisms using the agar well diffusion assay. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC50) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the most potent extracts were determined by the microdilution method, followed by qualitative phytochemical analysis. Results were analyzed statistically by ANOVA one - way test. Different concentrations (200,100, 50mg/mL) of the methanol, acetone, ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts showed activity against S. aureus and A. hydrophila while for H. pylori, only methanol and ethyl acetate extracts were active; water showed no activity for all studied bacterial pathogens. Mean zone diameter of inhibition which ranged from 0-22mm were observed for all test bacterial pathogens and 14-17mm for ciprofloxacin. The activity of methanol and ethyl acetate extracts were statistically significant (P< 0.05) compared to all the other extracts. MIC50 and MBC ranged from 0.078 – 2.5mg/mL, 0.78-25mg/mL respectively for all tested bacterial pathogens. For ciprofloxacin, the MIC50 and MBC ranged from 0.00976 – 0.078mg/mL and 0.098– 0.78mg/mL respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between extracts (methanol, acetone, ethanol, ethyl acetate) and the control antibiotic (ciprofloxacin) (P> 0.05). Qualitative phytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of alkaloids, saponins, steroids, tannins and flavonoids in the methanol, acetone,ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts. The results demonstrate that H. africana may contain compounds with therapeutic potentials which can be lead molecules for semi-synthesis of new drugs.

Guidelines on the use of indigenous-western anti-hypertensive therapies in BelizeHusaini, Danladi Chiroma 03 1900 (has links)
This study’s objectives were to identify, describe, and provide guidelines on using indigenous-western antihypertensive therapies in Belize to examine indigenous therapies’ efficacy in lowering blood pressure. The researcher utilized an explanatory sequential mixed method research design to examine indigenous-western therapies. Data were collected quantitatively from the general public (n=422) and qualitatively from hypertensive patients (n=24) using indigenous therapies and vendors (n=19) of indigenous therapies. The study results identified 47 different medicinal plants used in the management of hypertension in Belize, as reported by participants. Besides, leaves were the most reported plant part used to manage hypertension, while boiling (decoction) was the most common preparation method. The common route of administration was the oral route, and ½ to 1 cup 2 to 3 times daily was the dose and frequency of administration, respectively. The majority of participants using indigenous therapies did not report side effects. Conversely, orally administered hydrochlorothiazide and captopril were the most common western therapies reported by most respondents in the study. The majority of the respondents did not report concomitant use of indigenous-western therapies to manage their hypertension; however, those who used indigenous therapies reported that medicinal plants were efficacious in lowering their blood pressure. Some of the claims by participants are verified by Western science, thereby authenticating indigenous therapy claims. The researcher developed guidelines on the use of indigenous-western therapies from the results of the study. Collaboration between indigenous healers and Western medical practitioners to provide holistic healthcare approaches was recommended since both sciences have identical foundations and can learn from each other. This study examined Angolan culture as an influence to accessing modern scientific health care with the aim to develop health information brochures to inform the population of the advantages of scientific medicine. The quantitative approach with an exploratory and descriptive design was applied in this study, using a questionnaire to collect data from 100 respondents by means of a convenience sample.
The findings indicated that most of the respondents were aware of what caused disease and illness in terms of modern knowledge, preferred to access government hospitals and also that government health care services were more affordable than some of the other alternatives. However, the study also found that a small section of the respondents believed in the powers and advantages of witch doctors, thus confirming that certain cultural issues still influenced the selection of assistance when health care and treatment is required.
