Souza, Laura Augusto de January 2017 (has links)
This master's thesis analyzes the thought of the teacher egressed from the undergraduate courses of a public university in what concerns to his process of academic education and the influence to their professional practice. This work tried to find, based on the theoretical and methodological contributions provided by Education, Psychology and Sociology, to identify how the process of initial teacher training was given, circumscribed in the desire to be a teacher in the contemporary world and the role of the teacher in the world of work, focusing on the specific case of graduates from UFRGS. The investigate technique applied in this research was the use of a questionary for graduates from UFRGS courses of education teachers. It was hypothesized that the gaps in the courses are essentially related to the pedagogical area of the courses, mainly in the distance between the theories studied and the school reality. The theoretical reference used for the analysis of data is supported by the work of Sigmund Freud entitled “Civilization and its Discontents” that elucidates the idea of the malaise generated by the process of civilization of the individual and in the contributions of critical theorists as Zygmunt Bauman and Antonio Novoa. The data obtained in the research reveal that there is no consensus among the interviewees about the influence of teacher training in professional practice. We identify convergences, such as satisfaction with the degree course and the gaps left by the undergraduate degree. The lack of practical hours was referred as a significant factor to the feeling of malaise. As for the worth of the teaching career, many of the graduates feel unmotivated to continue their profession. Respondents also reached the issue of the discrepancy between what was learned and the reality of classrooms in public schools.

Studentų - dėstytojų santykių įtaka aukštojo mokslo kokybei / Relationship between students and proffesors and it's influence on the quality of higer education

Gokutė, Jolita 18 February 2009 (has links)
Be to, sovietmečiu vyravusi monologinė paskaitos vedimo forma perauga į intensyvesnį dialogą su studentais paskaitų metu. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / Higher education is an integral part of public culture. The widespread demand for higher education raises questions about its quality. Of direct consequence to the quality of higher education is the relationship between students and their professors. Thus, the purpose of this research project is to investigate particulars of the student-professor relations and their impact on the quality of education in the Lithuanian cultural context. It is to be expected that after independence and subsequently, after joining the EU in May, 2003, a significantly new classroom culture has emerged - in terms of expectations, teaching styles, and relationships between student and professor, the norms and etiquette, that shapes their interaction. In addition, the prevailing lecture by monologue in the time of Soviet union, took the form of guidance to intensify dialogue with the students during lecture. It is therefore interesting to see whether the relationships between teachers and students have an affect to better quality learning. On the theoretical side, this paper mainly utilizes the work of R. Barnett to define the concept of "quality of higher education", and the empirical part is meant to explore the relationship between students and professors as they manifest themselves in Lithuania, based on the opinions revealed by students and professors. The discipline of anthropology can aid us in understanding human behavior in the educational sphere. Anthropologists, who study different... [to full text]

Mapping the Borderland of the Knowledge Society: Strategic Global Partnerships and Organizaitonal Responses of Universities in Transition

Szyszlo, Peter 14 August 2018 (has links)
Globalization has motivated universities to calibrate institutional responses for strategic purposes. Yet, specific challenges remain for Ukrainian National Research Universities insofar as the interplay between global and (post-)Soviet knowledge discourses reveal a dual framework, whereby adaptive responses to globalization and entrenched state-centered logics run parallel, and often in conflict, with one another. This study took a critical approach to identify and interpret how the phenomenon of internationalization manifested in the development of strategic partnerships, was translated and re-contextualized into structural innovations, and resulted in systemic institutional change. The thesis delves into the institutional behaviour of three flagship universities in Kyiv, Ukraine and their respective doctoral schools. The selected universities – Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv – represent a mixture of organizational types which fall into one or more of the three education archetypes, including the Humboldtian, Soviet and Anglo-American models. These governance models allow for differentiation of institutional interpretations of internationalization and a means of capturing the various ways in which university actors negotiate their spaces of action and translate higher education discourses into practice. The analysis addresses issues of ‘hybridity’ which is not evident in this categorization. The study attempts to problematize internationalization anew by shifting focus on non-linear accounts of the phenomenon in order to comprehend the complex, multi-faceted and often contradictory ways the process plays out across different university landscapes. The inquiry employs conceptualizations combining the Delta Cycle for Internationalization (Rumbley 2010) and a new institutional approach (North 1990). The study is structured as a single-case embedded case study design as described by Yin (2015). Data were collected via 45 semi-structured interviews with university actors and higher education stakeholder agencies, including: senior administrators, mid-level leaders, faculty members and doctoral candidates. The data were supported by scholarly literature, official documents, reports, strategy papers, grey materials, policy statements, field notes. as well as university and ministerial websites. These data were analyzed for content and triangulated according to a modified content analysis approach. This study expands and contributes knowledge on the internationalization of higher education by distinguishing variations of how the phenomenon manifested within different university settings. It examines the place of the university as an organization that not only produces and disseminates knowledge, but assimilates and adapts global knowledge to national needs. Finally, the inquiry explores internationalization as an academic innovation and a process of institutional change which shapes academic identities and legitimizes the university as a global actor.
