This study is concerned with the problem of determining whether there is a relationship between achievement and specific ethnic and profile characteristics of Anglo-American and Mexican-American junior and senior high school students who are enrolled in a large metropolitan public school district. The purposes include (a) delineation of demographic data on these students in terms of specific group membership, gender, age, and educational concerns; (b) identification of the attitudes and values of these students; (c) evaluation of the relationships between the demographic data and the degree to which ethnic membership and interpersonal concerns impact participation in the classroom.

The purpose of this study is a comparison of the socio-economic status with the school status of the seventh, eighth, and ninth-grade pupils of the Montague, Texas, public schools. In this study the socio-economic status is interpreted as meaning the position that the individual, or family, occupies with reference to average standards based on the home status indexes.

The purpose of this study was to examine the attitudes of journalism students in Dallas high schools toward the meanings and images of journalism careers. Eleven out of eighteen Dallas high schools participated. A total of 211 respondents, 145 females and 66 males, completed the questionnaire. The first part of the analysis involved the comparison through percentage tables illustrating the similarities and differences of the groups. The second part of the analysis involved the semantic differential scales and the mean profile comparisons for the groups. Although the seven branches of journalism did differ significantly from one another, the male and female subjects did not differ significantly in their meanings of the concepts.

The academic achievement gap between English language learners (ELLs) and other student groups, especially at the secondary level, is a problem that only will increase as Hispanic demographics increase at state and national levels. It is imperative to examine the factors that affect or influence the academic achievement of ELLs and identify issues within the educational culture, systems, and constituents that have a negative effect on the academic performance of ELL students. This case study research examined the practices and organizational frameworks through the perspectives, or mind maps, of teachers who work with ELLs at E.P.I.S.D. in Texas. The study was guided by three research questions: (a) What is the mind map of high school teachers in producing a high-performing ELL, (b) what is the mind map of high school teachers in producing a low-performing ELL, and (c) how do these two mind maps compare with one another? Using an Interactive Qualitative Analysis (IQA) methodology, this study actively engaged constituents in reflective, meaningful discourse surrounding a phenomenon of interest, resulting in rich, comprehensive data that can be utilized for decision making in strategic planning and implementation of change. The IQA process and analysis served as a needs assessment technique on how to better serve ELLs.

This thesis determines the growth of scientific thinking and civic attitudes attained by students in the Grandfalls Royalty High School in West Texas.

A study to gather information on living conditions of boys and girls in Adamson High School who come from broken homes, in order to discover the individual needs of the students in order to promote greater interest and develop better citizenship.

The field of education recognizes the basic human need for wholesome use of leisure time according to Nash. Modern education also affirms that individual differences in interests are enormous and vary tremendously from individual to individual within a group. With all these variations a great amount of grouping still takes place. It therefore stands to reason that there are certain factors which aid in determining how people spend their leisure time, and how people within a group are similar. Some of these factors are age, sex, intelligence, socio-economic status, and availability of opportunity to participate. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the implications of certain aspects of homogeneous grouping in the school and their relationship to the American conception of democracy.
