This research aims at presenting some school practices which came to be historical due to Arithmetic and Geometry classes in the state of Goiás, Brazil, from 1831 to 1907. In order to develop such a theme, we made use of documental research as methodology. It was necessary to select documents and organize them as primary and secondary sources. Through the documents from 19th century and the beginning of 20th century, we came to know the structure and the conditions of the first junior high schools as well as the detached classes. We also understood the factors which contributed to the first class of Arithmetic and Geometry, with the purpose of preparing teachers. The documents allowed us to perceive aspects of Math after the opening of Liceu de Goiás, such as: school contents, books used by the students, teaching methods and teachers’ formation. The reports of the governors and public schools instructors revealed how difficult it was to mantain a public school in a situation characterized by lack of teachers, low salaries and inadequate buidings
