Conveying Portland's History in Modern Use: The Role of Industrial and Cultural Heritage in Adaptive Reuse / Role of Industrial and Cultural Heritage in Adaptive Reuse

Churchward, Patience, 1981- 06 1900 (has links)
xvii, 146 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This thesis examines the role of cultural heritage in adaptively reused historic industrial buildings in Portland, Oregon. While it has been argued that adaptive reuse contributes to the ecological and economic initiatives of sustainability, this research explores how adapting historic industrial buildings for modern reuse can also be socially and culturally sustainable for communities. Industrial buildings provide physical evidence of a rich cultural and industrial past and there are opportunities to share this heritage with a building's new users and/or the surrounding community. Case studies include selectively chosen National Register nominated buildings that meet specific criteria, share a common regulatory framework, and provide insightful information regarding the relationship between history and new use. Strengths and challenges of conveying industrial heritage in modern use as well as opportunities for developers of historic properties to highlight and improve upon this process are identified. / Committee in Charge: Robert Z. To be or not to be a theatre - The future of Brighton Hippodrome : An investigation of the roles of immediate stakeholders in the case of a building at risk / Att vara eller inte vara en teater – framtiden för Brighton Hippodrome : En undersökning av de närmaste intressenternas roller i fallet av en byggnad i risk

Berglund, Sanna January 2018 (has links)
The research investigates those conflicting interests in the future for the Brighton Hippodrome theatre. The building is in a permanent state of disuse since it closed in 2006. It is in poor condition and is adversely affecting its surrounding environment. Though there has not been much happening in regard to the specific building, there have been a lot in relation to it. It has been sold several times, reports being produced, planning applications have been submitted, but its current state remains the same. The stakeholders involved in Brighton Hippodrome has been the subject of a qualitative study conducted through interviews, analysis of documents and articles. The purpose of the survey has been to look at the interests, resources and values of the various stakeholders. As well as when and under what circumstances the stakeholders interact. Through this, different factors and aspects have been identified as presented in text, illustrations and timelines. The result indicates that there are strong forces with sound aspects involved, though they may seem not to, they do share much in common. A major issue is that decisions not being follow through and there is a lack of communication between stakeholders in which ultimately affects the building negatively and prolongs its current derelict state. The current situation might jeopardise what is stated to be of significant value due to the urgency of repair and the rush to find a new use for the building. There is a risk that a future development might leave some stakeholders disappointed if not handled correctly.

Museu Paulista: um edifício de técnica tradicional de construção de alvenarias / Museu Paulista: building a traditional technique of building walls

Yara Ligia Mello Moreira Petrella 05 May 2008 (has links)
Através de ensaios exploratórios, se reconstitui os traços das argamassas e identificam processos de danos / This thesis refers to the study of the building of Museu Paulista and identifies the characteristics of the traditional masonries constructions techniques that involves the structural systems and the materials used. It describes the historical circumstances and of the evolution of taipa to brick and the inclusion of the building of Museu Paulista in the city of São Paulo in the middle of XIX th Century. It also analyses the characteristics that differs one history and modern build structural solutions and the nature of materials. The main structural systems are constituted by walls, right feet, arch and vault, pilaster and colums, wooden floor, abobadilha, and foundation. The materials are analysed in the several aspects such as the presence of constant humidity, that occurs when there isnt the impermeabilization of the foundations; presence of solubles salts; the porosity of materials; the presence of microorganism and the type of paint used in the painting. Through the history intervations it is verified that amount them there are some generated caused damage to the building due the fact that the specified characteristics were not taken account of. Through the exploratories essays it is reconstructed the composition of the mortars and the identification of the damages process.

Kmeťová, Markéta January 2011 (has links)
The thesis "Summer festivals in historic buildings" is focused on festivals, their current position on the cultural scene and a brief description of monuments and the possibility of their animation. With the mutual comparison of selected festivals was in the practical part made a model of the Prague Baroque festival. The main goal of the work focused on the identification and description of the major factors that have a direct impact on the success of the festival and their subsequent application in the construction business plan model festival. Characteristics of selected projects, industry and competitor analysis and SWOT analysis provided the information necessary to create a business plan. Information sources were supplemented by quantitative spacecraft to provide feedback on the first year of the Prague Baroque Festival. The conclusion is devoted to the synthesis and evaluation of evidence linking the project with cultural heritage objects, their advantages and disadvantages.

Enhanced Energy Efficiency and Preservation of Historic Buildings : Methods and Tools for Modeling

Widström, Torun January 2012 (has links)
As the environmental impacts of the energy usage of the world today becomes more and more evident, enhancement of energy performance of the already existing building stock becomes more urgent. Buildings belonging to the cultural heritage are often the ones that are most difficult to deal with in this context. The subject of this thesis is the use of building simulation of historic buildings. The task here is to identify and when necessary develop simulation tools and methods that are suitable for planning of retrofitting strategies in historic buildings, and to identify and analyze what demands such tools and methods would have to fulfill, in what contexts different simulation strategies are suitable, how the demands on the tools might be met and what results and how the results would facilitate the decision making process in the most optimal way. A powerful means to acquire such analyses is the use of whole-building simulation. In the case of historical buildings there are several aspects to take into consideration, determining the choice of simulation tool and method. This thesis includes Investigation of the variability of the demands on simulation tools and methods that the historic buildings pose, and its implication on complexity of the simulation process, and suggestion of a complexity index tool. Investigation of the whole-building simulation process and how it complies with the demands identified, and how the exergy concept can be used, exemplified by a case study. Identification of a need for a tool and method for a large amount of cases not easily covered by abundantly available tools and methods Suggestion of a tool and method to address these cases, and presentation of a case study where the suggested tool and method have been applied, with good agreement between the simulated and measured values. One important feature of the suggested tool is the Very Small Wall-part Method, that includes the assessment of especially damage prone points into the whole-building simulation model, otherwise unable to accommodate these points. Another is the damage risk assessment feature where a mould risk prediction tool is presented. /
QC20120920

Achieving sustainability in Swedish historic buildings

Martínez Pérez, Carmen Coronada January 2014 (has links)
The increasing world energy demand has become the need of achieving energy efficiency and sustainable practices a key element in order to ensure the future of the societies. In Sweden, buildings accounts for 40% of total energy consumption. Within a sector that consumes almost half of the energy in the country it is possible to identify a group of buildings which generally presents a higher consumption and bigger problems, the historic and protected buildings. There is big room for improvement in the field of achieving sustainability in historic building although most of this improvements are constrained by limitations and protections due to their condition. Studying this limitations and needs for improvement of these buildings it is possible to come up with energy efficient solutions according with the regulations. The aim of this report will be achieving sustainability in Swedish historic/protected buildings, while respecting the applicable law to ensure that heritage and cultural value is respected, by proposing energy efficiency improvement measures that requires a feasible investment with a reasonable pay-back time.

Historic Preservation in Utah: 1960-1980

Haggerty, John W. 01 January 1980 (has links) (PDF)
Historic preservation in Utah from 1960 to 1980 has reflected major national trends and trends peculiar to Utah. The most important event which increased the influence of the federal government in preservation activities in Utah was the passage of the Federal Historic Preservation Act of 1966. This law influenced the Utah State Historical Society to become active in preservation in Utah. The battles to save the L. D. S. tabernacles in the 1960s and 1970s led to the formation of the Utah Heritage Foundation. This organization has been responsible for the heightened awareness of historic preservation in Utah. During the 1960s and 1970s, the major fields of preservation activity occurred in restoring church buildings, homes, and commercial establishments. No clear direction has emerged from the effort to save church buildings. Historic homes are now primarily being saved on an individual basis or in historic districts. Historic commercial buildings have generally been saved by being converted into modified malls with historic themes. Historic preservation has been slow to grow in Utah, but preservation appears to be firmly rooted in the state.

The Martha Washington Inn, 1830-1893: a documented history with architectural descriptions

Hall, Martha VanHook 17 March 2010 (has links)
It was the purpose of this study to develop a documented history of the structures of the Martha Washington Inn. The study also sought to answer specific questions posed by the Virginia Landmarks Commission and the management of the Martha Washington Inn concerning the construction, and the historical and architectural significance of the structures. The history includes the purpose for which the buildings were constructed, how the buildings were utilized, and detailed architectural descriptions. The history was developed through examination of both primary and secondary sources. These sources included minutes of organizations personal journals, deeds, wills, genealogies, published memoirs, and a bill of work. The architectural descriptions were developed through readings in architectural history, historic photographs and illustrations, and direct observation. / Master of Science
