This paper aims to study the novel Cães da Província of Luiz Antonio de Assis Brasil, published in 1987, whose protagonist is the playwright José Joaquim Campos de Leão, the Qorpo-Santo. The setting is the city of Porto Alegre in the last decades of the nineteenth century, when Qorpo-Santo lived and created his theater, admittedly unusual and so misunderstood. This novel presents instigating elements such as the frequent use of intertextuality, especially with the work of the south Brazilian playwright. Therefore, we intend to address the general characteristics that determine the aesthetic factor, in the context of new historical novel, contained in Cães da Província, in order to show how the literature, considering the development of language, works with the elements of History, ordering them and rewriting them in a particular way. Even if, without discussing the problems of man in his relationship with his peers, and with the context in which it is inserted, the new historical novel does not intend to present absolute truths, but relative truths that, by the plurisignification of language, enable the reader to confront these variants to choose, among them, the one that comes closest to his desire.

Visual Storytelling in the Cape Flats Gang Biopics Noem My Skollie (2016) and Ellen: Die Storie van Ellen Pakkies (2018)

Arendse, Leslé Ann January 2021 (has links)
Masters of Art / This M.A. mini-thesis seeks to open up the post-apartheid South African biopic as a topic for serious historical scrutiny. While book-length written biographies published in the post-apartheid (and apartheid periods) are the subjects of a now quite extensive historiographical literature, biography on film – including in the form of filmic dramas – has been hitherto entirely ignored. Social history or marginalised lives and not political lives of struggle against apartheid have been the predominant subgenre within this emerging field: with sixteen biopics having been produced in the 2010s. But the field is dominated by white men. This thesis showcases the story-telling gifts of one young coloured film-maker through a meticulously detailed analysis of “visual story-telling” and “visual language” used in his two award-winning gang biopics, Noem My Skollie (2016) and Ellen. Die Stories van Ellen Pakkies (2018). Read in the context of the extended processes of production of these two films in which the central protagonists played a shaping background role, the thesis explores and compares the linear chronological, four-chapter, narrative structure of Noem My Skollie with the architecture of “the parallel narrative” used in the deeply disturbing Ellen. Die Storie van Ellen Pakkies (2018) The thesis is a celebration of the film-making talent of Daryne Joshua.

Untimely Deaths in Renaissance Drama: Shakespeare, Middleton, Marlowe

Griffin, Andrew 07 1900 (has links)

In this dissertation, I read several early modern plays - Shakespeare's Richard II, Middleton's A Chaste Maid in Cheapside, and Marlowe's Dido, Queene of Carthage - alongside a variety of early modem historiographical works. I pair drama and historiography in order to negotiate the question of early modem untimely deaths. Rather than determining once and for all what it meant to die an untimely death in early modem England, I argue here that one answer to this question requires an understanding of the imagined relationship between individuals and the broader unfolding of history by which they were imagined to be shaped, which they were imagined to shape, or from which they imagined to be alienated. I assume here that drama - particularly historically-minded drama - is an ideal object to consider when approaching such vexed questions, and I also assume that the problematic of untimely deaths provides a framework in which to ask about the historico-culturally specific relationships that were imagined to obtain between subjects and history. While it is critically commonplace to assert that early modern drama often stages the so-called "modern" subject, I argue here that early modern visions of the subject are often closely linked to visions of that subject's place in the world, particularly in the world that is recorded by historiographers as a world within and of history. I argue that one can begin to make sense of deaths in terms of their timeliness or untimeliness only by recognizing historically specific senses of the narrativized subject and the imagined relationship between that subject and history.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Engaging Paul Ricoeur’s work on memory, history, and forgetting : in search of an adequate methodology for church and theological historiography

Van Tonder, Helené 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Life in the present is never only about the present, but notably also about the past and the future. In this study the problematic of the representation of the past is addressed in search of a responsible historical hermeneutic. It is argued that historical hermeneutics is about the past, the present and the future, and, above all, the relation that exists between them. Historical hermeneutics facilitates our understanding of the past from our position in the present and creates meaningful ways in which we may anticipate the future. In this study I aim to contribute to the development of responsible historical hermeneutic for church and theology, especially in South Africa. To do so, I engage with the magisterial work of the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur, Mémoire, l’histoire, l’oubli who, I believe, proposes valuable signposts for us to reckon with on our way to a responsible historical hermeneutic. A general introduction is given to theological historiography and the development thereof in South Africa, pointing towards reasons why it is important for responsible historical hermeneutics to exist. The work of Paul Ricoeur is introduced as a valuable partner to dialogue with in this respect. A brief intellectual biography is given regarding Ricoeur’s work in order to indicate where and how his last work fits into and forms a part of his life’s work. The third chapter of the study is an outline and discussion of Ricoeur’s work, Memory, History, Forgetting. The discussion follows the order of Ricoeur’s work itself, and I try to indicate the main lines in Ricoeur’s argument, yet giving credit to him for the thorough way in which he deals with the respective themes by engaging the disciplines of philosophy, history, sociology, neurosciences etc. Subsequently I propose certain themes from Ricoeur’s work that is important for the church historian and historical theologian as signposts towards an adequate historiographical methodology.

Assistência à infância como tema de trabalhos apresentados nos Congressos Brasileiros de História da Educação (2000-2015) / Child care as a theme of papers presented at the Brazilian Congresses on the History of Education (2000-2015)

Santos, Neiva Caetano dos 06 December 2017 (has links)
The present research sought to analyze the works published in the annals of the successive editions of the Brazilian Congress of History of Education, in order to delimit those whose object of study is child care. In order to reach this objective, the analysis of the editions of this event from 2000 to 2015 was carried out as a temporal cut, with emphasis on the works that present as a central topic of discussion the assistance for children. As for the method, this is a bibliographical survey research. It is considered in this analysis that the studies about child care are inserted in the field of History and in the History of Education dimension, as indicated by the Thematic Bibliographic Balances already carried out by Carla Silvana Daniel Sartor, Irma Rizzini and Maria Teresa da Fonseca, Maria Helena Rolim Capelato, and also the survey carried out in GT02 of ANPEd, as well as were able to prove that when the Brazilian Society of Education History and the CBHEs emerged, child care, care institutions, the history of poor childhood and philanthropy and charity, were themes of research that were already consolidated. Analyzing the profile of the works presented and published, of the total identified (4.163), only 77 productions (1.8%) correspond to the subject investigated, indicating that it is regular, since it was present in all editions of the event, but it is possible to infer that this is still a perspective of a peripheral study. The survey demonstrates the aspects more emphasized, that the themes Institution of Assistance to Childhood / Assistance and Socialization, were those that had the greatest recurrence in the works analyzed. It is common knowledge among these researchers to point out that education aimed at moralizing poor childhood, since education was limited to elementary knowledge, since the mission of the school was socializing. As far as girls\' education was concerned, it was limited to the preparation of these girls for the role of mother of a family, to perform household tasks perfectly to the detriment of pedagogical aspects. As for the Offices, the texts present points in common, the work was thought as the alternative to solve the problems of poor, abandoned and orphaned children, because when subjecting it to the learning of a craft, it was believed that it would be possible to regenerate and to qualify labour for the labour market

Men, forgive him, because he does not know what he did: the rise of man and the fall of God in Joseph Saramago, an allegory of modern religiosity

Francisca Carolina Lima da Silva 21 October 2016 (has links)
One of the predominant themes in Josà Saramagoâs work is the re-reading and the intertextuality with the sacred scriptures which compose the gospels of Christian JudaÃsm. This technique is built from the deconstruction of biblical narratives and from a subversive reading of some of the precepts that founded western ideology. Firm atheist, in these non religious inversions, Saramago, at the same time that questions unwavering beliefs, presents us a desmystification of western official History, from a humanizing view of the biblical episodes. In this dialog, one of the main subversions the author brings is the inversion of roles between God and man: this one, through Jesus Christ figure, assumes the sacred functions of God (mainly the one of being the measure for everything), while that one embodies typical human qualities, proving, to the author, his insufficiency as a superior entity. Our study proposes to assume that Saramago materializes the perspective of modern Christianism in his work, by the adoption of the philosophical idea of cultural death of God, through humanization and unveiling of the cruel and bloodthirsty nature of this character. The idea of divinity will reborn in Jesus Christ, as a man, strengthening, thus, an anthropological thought which sees man as the measure for everything, occupying, because of this, the place of God in the context of Christian religion. Our work intends, therefore, to comprehend the way this face of modern religiosity is incorporated in the analyzed narratives, through the inversion of roles between God and Jesus Christ. For this purpose, we will use some premises of Comparative Literature, as well as some concepts that define allegory, parody and dialogism, besides other literary theories that occur less frequently in our analysis. According to this, we will also proceed to a historical description that categorizes Saramago as a post-modern author, bearing in mind the transgression of historical, mythical and religious truths that he brings in his works. Also, we point out the use of polyphony of the incorporated discourse to the authorâs work, which will let emanate, through the analysis of allegorical ruins, other discourses silenced by traditional and religious History, in the contexts of the intertextualities that the author establishes. Our studies focus on the structures of composition of biblical texts, and on the possibility of treating these writings under a literary perspective. Furthermore, we disseminate the use of data from the sacred scriptures, as well as the profane, which tell about the Jesusâs walk in the Earth, in an attitude disconnected from any dogmatism or tendentious intention, revealing, so, the discourses overcame by their theological reading. We consider, however, that even materializing this perspective, Saramagosâs texts continue inhabiting literary universe, not working, then, as a âdestroyerâ of sacred truths of Christianism.
