Vnímání mužského a ženského těla v české lékařské literatuře druhé poloviny 19. a počátku 20. století / Perception of male and female body in the czech medical literature of the second half of 19th and early 20th century

Najmanová, Veronika January 2014 (has links)
This thesis deals with the way in which the human body was discussed from different points of view in a particular type of medical literature (so called "Family Doctor Books) in the second half of the 19th and early 20th century. The work is based on a premise that body is not only neutral biological foundation made in nature but perception of body and physicality is influenced by society. That's why certain social changes may reflect changes in perception of human body, especially its conceptualization as a female and male body. Since just around sixties of the 19th century both emancipatory activities of Czech women, their rights extension and generally transformation of gender relations in society started to develop. This work examines whether these social changes reflected in the manner in which it was human, and thus male and female, body reported on in a particular medical literature. This work also explores what such conceptions of human body say about gender changes in society.

These Journal's articles are the primer source of this research. The seek of the analysis corpus occurred over the last twenty years of these journals (1997- 2017), with the exception of Revista Brasileira de História da Educação (RBHE) which was published for the first time in 2001 using the descriptors bodyeducation of the body-history of the education of the body. The purposes of this research were: 1) To map the journals publications which had body education as the object of main study, investigation and debate; 2) To perform a description of the constitutive elements of the scientific production published; and 3) To analyse the chosen elements description searching how body education has been inserted on physical education, history of education and education. For lecture and interpretation of the research sources was used Pierre de Bourdieu’s sociology and his categories analyses of recurrence and singularity, inspired on Cristina Borges de Oliveira (2009) working paper. The description and analyses of these academic sources allowed us to notice, beside others, that body-education knowledge has been developed by a few physical-education professors binded to Colleges and Post-Graduation Programs of Education from south and southeast Brazil and that belonging feeling of the writers restrain the tematics clipping choices and the periodization. Also, was verified teorical and epistemologycal fragility showed on dispersion and generalization concepts.

Préserver la santé des armées dans le Japon moderne : la médecine militaire face à la guerre russo-japonaise / Preserving the health of the army in Modern Japan : military medicine in the Russo-Japanese War

Daimaru, Ken 16 December 2017 (has links)
This thesis analyses the experiences of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), bringing together two historical objects of inquiry: the history of warfare and the history of medicine. Its purpose is to document and understand the organization of the Imperial Japanese Army Sanitary Corps and the medical practices that unfolded within it at the turn of the twentieth century. Focusing on the creation and the institutionalization of the care of the war wounded and sick during the Meiji era (1868-1912) and its implications for the conflict of 1904-1905, this thesis highlights the institutional and social dynamics of military medicine and the cultural production of discourses, objects and images related to war diseases and wounds. Our theoretical framework articulates the entanglement of the various actors’ perceptions (Japanese doctors and international observers) on the wounded and/or diseased body. Our results show how the transformation of the battlefield, induced by increased firepower and the resulting tactical and strategic reorganization, was also a driving force for the medicalization of combat activities, military research and the production of expertise. These processes reshaped the paradigms of combat aimed at maintaining the competitiveness of the military, that the success of preventive medicine serves to legitimize. They also accentuate the fragility of the army and the structure of medicine on the battlefield, which were under increasing stress due to the rapid progress of industrialization. The professional specialization and individual practices observed during the war lead us to discuss the benefits and limits of the strategies adopted by Japanese military surgeons to resist the increasingly destructive realities of industrial warfare.
