Sobre a teoria das ondas de spin / On the theory of Spin waves

O formalismo matemático da teoria das ondas de spin é analisado. A equivalência entre as transformações de Dyson-Malleev e Holstein-Pr imakoff é demonstrada. Os problemas envolvendo a interação cinemática são discutidos em detalhe. Uma nova divisão do Hamiltoniano de Heisenberg, desenvolvida no espaço de configuração, é usada para estudar a interação dinâmica entre as ondas de spin a baixa temperatura e para grandes valores do número quântico de spin S. Assumindo que a restrição cinemática pode ser neglicenciada, a expansão da energia livre é desenvolvida em potências da temperatura e os resultados estão em acordo com os de Dyson. A relevância da aproximação diagonal de Mattis é demonstrada. Usando o método da positividade por reflexão, limites superiores e inferiores para a contribuição da energia livre são encontrados. Dentro de certa aproximação, estes limites significam que a interação dinâmica pode ser neglicenciada caso o inverso da temperatura (=1/KT), eo número quântico de spin S, forem grandes o suficiente, porém com dependente de S nestas estimativas. Este fato, que não ocorre no limite clássico, é uma característica na região das ondas de spin. / The mathematical formalismo f the spin wave theory is analysed. The thermodynamical equivalence between the Dyson-Malleev and Holstein-Primakoff transformations is proved. The problems involving the kinematical interaction are also discussed in detail. A new splitting of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian, perfomed in configuration space, is used to study the spin wave dynamical interaction at low temperature and for large values of the spin quantum number S. Assuming the the kinematical restriction may be lifted, a low temperature espansion of the free energy is developed with results in agreement with Dysons. The relevance of the Mattis diagonal approximation for the dynamical interaction is demonstrated. Using the method of reflection positivity, upper and lower bounds to the contribuition of the dynamical interaction to the free energy are provided. In a certain approximation, these bounds mean that the dynamical interaction may be dropped IF the inverse temperature (=1/KT) and the spin quantum number S are large enough but depends on S in the estimates, a novel feature wich does not occur in the classical limit but is characteristic of the spin-wave limit.

Until the beginning of the 19th century no sharply defined demarcation between Danish on the one hand and German on the other had been possible nor necessary. However, throughout the century the firm belief that Danes and Germans had been fierce enemies from time immemorial in the fight for control over the border region, and specifically over Schleswig, became prevalent. From a Danish perspective, the border between the two parties had always run along the Eider and should continue to do so, whereas the people of Schleswig-Holstein claimed their eternal solidarity and affiliation including the regions further north as far as the course of the Königsau. The close ties in socio-cultural and political terms which had existed between Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein, or else Germany, during medieval and modern times were neglected or ignored. Denmark now sought out and emphasized the closeness to the Scandinavian neighbours instead. The predominant commitment to a vague Nordism, to which the German neighbours had no direct access, became an important part in the concept of the German-Danish border as a kind of protective barrier against the south that continues to have an effect even today, considering the 2016 reintroduced passport controls and the 2019 newly arranged ‘wild boar fence’ along the German-Danish border.

Influence of protein degradability and evaporative cooling on performance of lactating cows during hot environmental temperatures

Two trials were conducted to determine the effect of protein degradability (low (LD) vs high (HD)) and evaporative cooling (shade cooling vs shade) on performance of 60 lactating Holstein cows in mid-lactation. Cooling and the LD diet increased milk production, 3.5% FCM and feed efficiency in trial 1 (24 cows) while in trial 2 (36 cows) LD diet increased milk production and feed efficiency and cooling did not exert a significant effect. Differences between trials were probably due to higher environmental temperature humidity indexes (77.0 vs 72.0), and a higher quality of the rumen bypass protein in the LD diet in trial 2 than trial 1. Cooling reduced respiration rates in trial 1 and respiration rates, rectal and inner ear temperatures in trial 2. Eating patterns were unaffected by protein degradability or cooling.

Effects of Zilpaterol hydrochloride feeding duration on color of beef and Holstein semimembranosus steaks packaged in PVC and MAP systems

Hunt / The objective of this study was to determine the effects of Zilmax® feeding duration (7.56 g/ton Zilmax for 0, 20, 30, or 40 d) on color development and stability of crossbred beef (B) and Holstein (H) semimembranosus (SM) steaks packaged in polyvinyl chloride overwrap (PVC), high-oxygen (80% O2, 20% CO2, HiOx) modified atmosphere packaging (MAP), and low-oxygen (0.4% CO, 30% CO2, 69.6% N2, LoOx) MAP. A 7.62-cm thick portion from beef and Holstein SM muscles (n = 120 total, 30 from each feeding duration) was removed, vacuum packaged, and stored until d 21 when two, 2.54-cm thick steaks were cut, overwrapped with PVC, and placed into retail display for 0 or 3 d. On d 10, the remaining muscle of the SM was enhanced, and five, 2.54-cm thick steaks were cut and assigned to 0, 3, or 5 d (HiOx) and 0 or 9 d (LoOx) of display. Measurements taken on the deep (DSM) and superficial (SSM) portions were: pH, L*, a*, b*, hue angle, and saturation indices, initial color, display color, and discoloration. No Diet × Display Day (P > 0.05) interaction occurred for display color or discoloration scores of B steaks in PVC. On d 1, PVC 30 d H steaks were brighter (P < 0.05) than 40 d H steaks in PVC; no differences (P > 0.05) in H PVC display color due to diet occurred on d 0, 2, and 3. For steaks in HiOx, the DSM of 20 and 30 d B steaks on d 4 and the DSM of 20 d B steaks on d 5 was brighter (P < 0.05) red than 40 d Zilmax B DSM. HiOx 20 d H steaks were darker red (P < 0.05) on d 5 of display and more discolored (P < 0.05) on d 3 to 5 than HiOx H steaks from all other diet regimens. For LoOx, 30 d B steaks were brighter (P < 0.05) red than 0 or 40 d steaks on d 0 and 9 of display. The DSM and SSM of LoOx H steaks from cattle fed Zilmax tended (P > 0.05) to be brighter red than control H steaks through 9 d of display. In conclusion, both HiOx and LoOx minimized color differences due to SM muscle areas. Feeding B cattle Zilmax for 20 or 30 d yields steaks equal to or better in color traits than cattle fed 0 or 40 d when packaged in PVC, HiOx, or LoOx. H steaks in LoOx had slight benefits in color stability when cattle were fed Zilmax for any duration, whereas H steaks in PVC had color advantages with only the 20 and 30 d durations. Packaging 20 d H steaks in HiOx resulted in less desirable color characteristics than all other feeding treatments. Influence of periparturient and postpartum diets on rumen methanogen communities in three breeds of primiparous dairy cows

Background: Enteric methane from rumen methanogens is responsible for 25.9 % of total methane emissions in the United States. Rumen methanogens also contribute to decreased animal feed efficiency. For methane mitigation strategies to be successful, it is important to establish which factors influence the rumen methanogen community and rumen volatile fatty acids (VFA). In the present study, we used next-generation sequencing to determine if dairy breed and/or days in milk (DIM) (high-fiber periparturient versus high-starch postpartum diets) affect the rumen environment and methanogen community of primiparous Holstein, Jersey, and Holstein-Jersey crossbreeds. Results: When the 16S rRNA gene sequences were processed and assigned to operational taxonomic units (OTU), a core methanogen community was identified, consisting of Methanobrevibacter (Mbr.) smithii, Mbr. thaueri, Mbr. ruminantium, and Mbr. millerae. The 16S rRNA gene sequence reads clustered at 3 DIM, but not by breed. At 3 DIM, the mean % abundance of Mbr. thaueri was lower in Jerseys (26.9 %) and higher in Holsteins (30.7 %) and Holstein-Jersey crossbreeds (30.3 %) (P < 0.001). The molar concentrations of total VFA were higher at 3 DIM than at 93, 183, and 273 DIM, whereas the molar proportions of propionate were increased at 3 and 93 DIM, relative to 183 and 273 DIM. Rumen methanogen densities, distributions of the Mbr. species, and VFA molar proportions did not differ by breed. Conclusions: The data from the present study suggest that a core methanogen community is present among dairy breeds, through out a lactation. Furthermore, the methanogen communities were more influenced by DIM and the breed by DIM interactions than breed differences.

Effect of different cooling systems on concentrations of certain hormones and free fatty acids at varying times during lactation of Holstein cows.

In experiment 1, fourteen cows were blocked for milk yields and balanced for days in lactation. Treatments were: (1) Air conditioning (AC), five cows; (2) Evaporative cooling (EC), four cows; and (3) Conventional shade (S), five cows. Sequential samples were taken for 8 h at 12 min intervals starting at 2200 and then at hourly intervals for 13 h. Serum was assayed for insulin, thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and cortisol using a double-antibody radioimmunoassay procedure. Free fatty acids (FFA) were determined in serum by an enzymatic method. In experiment 2, ten cows were blocked for milk yields and days in lactation. Treatments were: (1) Evaporative cooling (EC), five cows; and (2) conventional shade (S), five cows. Blood was drawn at 60 and 90 d of lactation. Blood sampling, hormone and FFA assays were carried out as in experiment 1. Sequential samples were taken for 8 h at 12 min intervals starting at 2300 and then at hourly intervals from 1030 to 1830. In experiment 1, insulin was depressed (P <.05) treatment effects for T3 in either experiment. There were significant treatment differences (P <.05) in respiration rates and body temperatures in experiment 1. Shade were higher than AC or EC cows. These studies demonstrated that summer heat stress depressed insulin and increased FFA with variable effects on T4 and cortisol but no effect on T3.

Influence of protein level and degradability on performance of lactating cows during hot and cool environmental temperatures.

One hundred and twenty lactating Holstein cows in mid-lactation were offered diets varying in protein level and degradability at two locations during hot and moderate weather. Treatments were: (1) High protein (19%), high degradability (65%); (2) High protein (19%), medium degradability (40%); (3) Medium protein (15.5%), high degradability (65%); (4) Medium protein (15.5%), medium degradability (40%). Diets were individually fed during hot weather at the University of Arizona Dairy Farm and contained 38.4% alfalfa hay, 12.4% cottonseed hulls, 9.8% whole cottonseed, and 39.4% concentrate (dry matter). Diets were group fed during moderate weather at the Brigham Young University Dairy Farm, Provo, Ut, and contained 31.3% corn silage, 14% alfalfa haylage, 9.4% whole cottonseed and 45.3% concentrate (dry matter). Average daily ambient temperatures were 35.1°C for hot and 26.8°C for moderate weather locations. Fat-corrected milk (3.5%, 2 x milkings) and milk persistency were lower for treatment 1 than other treatments. For the respective treatments during hot weather means were: 23.4, 26.6, 28.5, 28.4 kg/d; 83.2, 91.2, 90.9, 90.3%; and for moderate weather means were: (3 x milkings): 34.7, 31.8, 32.2, 32.4 kg/d; 97.0, 93.4, 92.1, 90.3%. Dry matter intakes during hot weather were 21.5, 21.9, 23.3, and 23.1 kg/d. Respiration rate and rectal temperature during hot weather were: 90.1, 87.9, 90.9, 94.7 counts/min; 39.0, 39.3, 39.3, 39.5°C and for moderate weather: 61.2, 58.2, 55.5, 67.4 counts/min; 38.8, 38.6, 38.7, 38.8°C. Serum T₃,T₄ and cortisol were generally unaffected by treatment, but were depressed during hot weather. Serum glucose was not significantly affected by treatments at either environmental locations. Animals consumed more water with highly degradable protein diets at each location along with consuming more water during thermal stress. These data show that 3.5% fat-corrected milk and milk persistency are significantly affected (P <.01; P <.025) by rations high in protein of high degradability during heat stress.

Effects of Aspergillus oryzae on milk production, feed utilization and rumen fermentation in lactating dairy cows.

Two production trials were conducted for 84 d each. The first with 22 Holstein cows in late lactation. The second with 46 Holstein cows in early lactation. Treatments were C (control) and AO (A. oryzae 3g/d). Diets were for production trial 1 a 1:1 forage: concentrate ratio; for trial 2 was 2:3. Milk production in trial 1 was higher (P > .05) in AO fed cows during the first weeks of the trial. In trial two AO cows consistently produced more milk (P < .03). Rectal temperatures during hot weather (over 35°C) were consistently lower in AO fed cows, though not significant (P > .10). Two digestibility trials followed the production trials. For all digestion trials, Cr₂O₃ was used as digesta marker. In trial one AO tended to increase digestibility of DM (P > .10). In trial two digestibilities of DM, NDF and ADF were higher in AO fed cows (P < .05). Three other trials were conducted with mature Holstein cows fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulae. The first trial tested two levels of forage (1:2 vs 2:1; forage to concentrate) and C vs AO in a 4x4 latin square design. AO increased (P < .05) ADF digestibility in the high concentrate died. No change (P > .10) in rumen pH, concentrations and proportions of VFA, and ammonia concentrations resulted from AO treatments. In the second trial C, AO and SC (Saccharomyces cerevesiae 3 g/d) were compared in a repeated 3x3 latin square design. A 1:2 forage to concentrate diet was fed to six lactating cows. Both AO and SC increased (P < .05) rumen NDF digestibility. The third trial compared C vs AO in a swithchback design with four lactating cows fed a 2:3 forage to concentrate diet. AO increased (P < .05) rumen fiber digestion. AO did not affect rates of passage of corn or alfalfa hay; or the potentially digestible DM of milo, alfalfa hay or wheat straw. AO did increase (P < .05) digestion rate of alfalfa DM. In vitro AO increased DM digestibility. That effect can be reproduced by incorporation of the additive at the time of inoculation.
