BACKGROUND: Little is known about preschool parents' cognitions, barriers, supports and modeling of key obesogenic behaviors, including breakfast, fruit and vegetable consumption, sugary beverage intake, feeding practices, portion sizes, active playtime, reduced screen-time, sleep and selection of child-care centers with characteristics that promote healthy behaviors. METHODS: Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine these factors via survey and focus groups among 139 parents of 2- to 5-year-old children. Standard content analysis procedures were used to identify trends and themes in the focus group data, and Analysis of Variance was used to test for differences between groups in the survey data. RESULTS: Results showed 80% of parents ate breakfast daily, consumed sugary beverages 2.7 ± 2.5SD days per week, and had at least two different vegetables and fruits an average of 5.2 ± 1.8SD and 4.6 ± 2.0SD days per week. Older parents and those with greater education drank significantly fewer sugary drinks. Parents played actively a mean 4.2 ± 2.2 hours/week with their preschoolers, who watched television a mean 2.4 ± 1.7 hours/day. Many parents reported having a bedtime routine for their preschooler and choosing childcare centers that replaced screen-time with active play and nutrition education. Common barriers to choosing healthful behaviors included lack of time; neighborhood safety; limited knowledge of portion size, cooking methods, and ways to prepare healthy foods or play active indoor games; the perceived cost of healthy options, and family members who were picky eaters. Supports for performing healthful behaviors included planning ahead, introducing new foods and behaviors often and in tandem with existing preferred foods and behaviors, and learning strategies from other parents. CONCLUSIONS: Future education programs with preschool parents should emphasize supports and encourage parents to share helpful strategies with each other.

Key areas of learning adding to the research pool are: 1. Method for comparing costs of competing designs early in the research process before detailed design has been undertaken. 2. Use of state-of-the-art industrial design processes combined with social science investigations to direct research to meet end-user needs 3. Design of a low-cost, low thermal mass hot heat exchanger for use in thermo-acoustic engines 4. Design of a low-cost, low-mass Linear Alternator suitable for use in thermo-acoustic engines 5. Half-wave thermo-acoustic engine configuration with low-onset temperature suitable for operation with wood or dung as the fuel. 6. Use of an electrical analogue to predict unusual thermo-acoustic behaviour such as squegging and time-based pressure variations. The document is an extended abstract pulling together Riley’s 6 years of research and publications from the Score project, into one coherent theme as required by the University of Nottingham quality manual for staff engaged in research. The document describes the background of thermo-acoustics and how the project has enabled the science to progress from mainly rig-based engines to a manufacturable product. The research management process and techniques used to reduce project risk are highlighted, beginning with social science research into end-user requirements, system design, component design, testing and production cost predictions.

How well the home maker manages this challenge has a major impact on the food wastage and money spent on buying those. Any typical family with 4 people will spend at least $1500 per month for the groceries and the same family waste around $1000 worth of food in a year. These families don’t know the overall environmental impact of food waste which is piling up in landfills. From the survey done by Environmental Protection Agency, this food waste accounts for 20% of landfill waste.
Healthy Home(HH) Android application helps the user to get the re-order point of the groceries based on the quantity remaining. The user will input the entire grocery list which he/she has purchased and the daily quantity consumed. The application will take this as the input and give the recommendation of what to cook and how many calories that give to your body. It can distinguish and let you know by what time the food should be consumed based on the Best by date or whether it is Perishable/Non-perishable. This application will recommend you the ROP (Reorder Point) and SS (Safety Stock) which any household has to carry based on the DDLT (Demand During the Lead Time). We are using the Supply Chain Industry standard formula to calculate the SS (Safety Stock) and ROP (Reorder Point).
ROP = DDLT+ SS
*SS = 2 Days’ worth of Food (Defaulting) Instead of going with the Industry standard formula.
The user is provided with the database which consists of the standard grocery list with their calories information. The user is also provided with the standard cuisines (recipes) information in place which helps us in building the recommendation systems used to suggest recipes for users.

The chemical and genetic basis of tomato flavourJasionowicz, Piotr January 2012 (has links)
Tomatoes often lack the characteristic good taste that consumers expect. In recent years, the fruit and vegetable industry has focused on traits such as yield, colour, and fruit size; however, flavour has been largely forgotten, at least for varieties that are grown in bulk and are cheap to purchase. Tomato volatiles are one of the most important flavour contributors along with sugars and organic acids. Over 400 volatiles are present in tomato, but only about 30 are considered critical to tomato flavour. The purpose of this study was to identify volatile Quantitative Trait Loci (vQTL) using publicly available Solanum pennellii and Solanum habrochaites introgression lines (ILs). Detection of vQTL is an essential milestone for identification of candidate genes involved in tomato flavour. Identification of vQTL was undertaken by screening the ILs using Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (APCI-MS) and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Additionally key volatiles and their interactions were evaluated in a series of sensory experiments using tomato juice and tomato purée. The study revealed that, the S. pennellii population had several major effects including those on IL1-4, which had a vQTL for C6 volatile E-2-hexenal. It was possible to identify a sub-IL, 1-4-1 that also harboured this vQTL. In this IL1-4-1 region of chromosome 1, 122 genes were present including a possible, candidate gene likely to be involved in lipoxygenase pathway. The sensory experiments showed strong impact of methyl salicylate on other volatiles; E-2-hexenal and citral showed positive effects in purée studies. Children's rights to greater freedom and self-determination : a philosophical appraisal of the ethics of autonomous educationClegg, Annie January 2001 (has links)
This thesis presents arguments for better understanding and subsequent better treatment of children, particularly in relation to their education. Autonomous education is seen as more providential in attaining greater freedom and self-determination in children than systems of education which favour authoritarian policies. It is, however, conceded that there can be no 'one right way' approach when educating children as individuals. Divisibility of intelligence is discussed with reference to Paul Hirst, Howard Gardner and R. F. Dearden. Autonomous education is seen to be 'at home' in home-based education, and autonomous education within a democratic setting sets the scene for children's enfranchisement. A post-modernist technological revolution foreshadows cultural changes which may augur notions of education policies which embody voluntary rather than compulsory elements. The Compulsory Education Act is, therefore, assessed in relation to justice. To support the argument for greater freedom and self-determination, children's competences and capabilities are evaluated within the four main areas of rationality, responsibility, moral and emotional development and experience. A 'Personal-Territory Thesis' is the corner-stone of arguments which support a belief that knowledge and morality are founded on a rational basis which is common to both children and adults. Moral and emotional developments are assessed in relation to maturity in general. Dependence and autonomy are factors which present conflicting issues. Kant's moral theory features strongly throughout the thesis with much reference to Onora O'Neill's interpretation.

Their presence in structures is seldom noticed until damage is discovered or the termites swarm within the building. Drywood termites are found in the southern tier of states, from North Carolina through the Gulf Coast, Arizona and into the coastal areas of California.
