N2Z – A NFC to ZigBee® transceiver

Dhanekula, Anish 23 April 2013 (has links)
ZigBee home automation systems have been around for years. They include smart energy efficient wireless systems that connect devices via mesh networking. It has always been a problem to connect to these ZigBee nodes with existing technologies we use daily. The premise of this project is to provide easy access to these nodes via near field communication, which is a technology that is available on a majority of smart phones today. The report details the design and implementation of N2Z, a device that translates data provided by an Android app through a NFC interface to a ZigBee device and vice- versa. We first discuss the requirements and use cases for the device and application. Then the report goes on to discuss the base technologies behind N2Z, which include the Android platform, Near Field Communication (NFC) & the ZigBee platform. The report then goes on to discuss the design and implementation of the system. Consequently, we discuss the final results of the system with certain use cases and provide some empirical data that gives us insight into system operation. Next we discuss other existing technologies that exist in the market. Finally we conclude the report with a discussion on future work and thoughts on the future of ZigBee. / text

Developing a ZigBee home automation network

Comai, Michael A. 25 July 2011 (has links)
As electronics and appliances in the home continue to evolve, wireless networks that can monitor and control these are becoming more prevalent. Development platforms for technologies like RF4CE and ZigBee are becoming more available but can still be costly for a complete platform that supports interoperable devices with public ZigBee profiles. This paper details the design and implementation of a ZigBee Home Automation network using free tools on a low cost ZigBee development platform. The platform utilizes a dedicated processor for the ZigBee stack with SPI, UART, and USB interface, allowing the application code that was developed to be integrated into a wide variety of environments. / text

Heterogeneous Residential Gateway Design Using OSGi : With multi-user and multi-service capabilities

Mani, GaneshKumar January 2017 (has links)
As a result of developments, domestic usage of smart appliances by homeowners is increasing drastically. Clustering these appliances together and making them function as an efficient system defines a new place to live or new way of living called a “smart home”. While a smart home provides comfort to homeowners, realizing a smart home involves many technical and business oriented hurdles to be crossed. The primary goal of this thesis work is to design and evaluate the design of a residential gateway. This gateway should be designed as a standardized, secure, open source, hardware independent, and interoperable Residential Gateway. A service-oriented architecture is proposed using the OSGi framework to design the residential gateway and its individual components. These components include an access control component for homeowner authorization, a resource management component for managing connected devices, an automation component to realize an automation service, and finally a context component to provide context aware services to the homeowner. The final design proposed tries to solve the issues faced by some automation systems that are available in market. The evaluation of the design includes whether the design satisfies the basic requirements for a home gateway. This is followed by a comparison with existing systems with an emphasis on the improved features. The components proposed in the design could be used to construct a residential gateway that supports multiple services and multiple users. The proposed design will be taken into consideration during the design of Acreo’s home automation system.

M2M Protocols, Solutions and Platforms for Smart Home Environments : Integrating C.STATUSTM and the MediaSense

Lodamo, Addisu January 2012 (has links)
Digital technological breakthroughs have brought about a huge change in the way the society interacts, responds to the immediate environment and the way that people live. Furthermore, Ubiquitous Computing and dirt cheap sensors have created a new paradigm in digital technology where human beings could control their environment in a different approach. In a number of paradigms of digital technology, multiple proprietary solutions in industry results in a huge cost for the end users to use the technology and thus a very sluggish penetration of the technology into the society. Moreover, such unorganized and vendor oriented standards create additional burdens on a person concerned in design and implementation.  This thesis presents existing and emerging technologies in relation to smart home environment having an aim to manifest available open standards and platforms. Smart Home Environment Infrastructures have been presented and discussed. Evaluation and integration of a proprietary elderly care sensor system dubbed   C.STATUSTM and the MediaSense overlay network has also been presented. Performance measurement and comparison has been conducted in relation to the proprietary sensor system running on the top of the peer-to-peer MediaSense Platform with the existing C.STATUSTM centralized sensor system. C.STATUSTM User Interface has been designed and implemented for an Android mobile platform. / smart home environment, Internet of things

A system for controlling, monitoring and programming the home

Maternaghan, Claire January 2012 (has links)
As technology becomes ever more pervasive, the challenges of home automation are increasingly apparent. Seamless home control, home monitoring and home programming by the end user have yet to enter the mainstream. This could be attributed to the challenge of developing a fully autonomous and extensible home system that can support devices and technologies of differing protocols and functionalities. In order to offer programming facilities to the user, the underlying rule system must be fully independent, allowing support for current and future devices. Additional challenges arise from the need to detect and handle conflicts that may arise among user rules and yield undesirable results. Non-technical individuals typically struggle when faced with a programming task. It is therefore vital to encourage and ease the process of programming the home. This thesis presents Homer, a home system that has been developed to support three key features of a home system: control, monitoring and programming. Homer supports any third-party hardware or software service that can expose its functionality through Java and conform to the Homer interface. Stand-alone end user interfaces can be written by developers to offer any of Homer's functionality. Where policies (i.e. rules) for the home are concerned, Homer offers a fully independent policy system. The thesis presents a custom policy language, Homeric, that has been designed specifically for writing home rules. The Homer policy system detects overlaps and conflicts among rules using constraint satisfaction and the effect on environment variables. The thesis also introduces the notion of perspectives to ease user interactivity. These have been integrated into Homer to accommodate the range of ways in which a user may think about different aspects and features of their home. These perspectives include location, device type, time and people-oriented points of view. Design guidelines are also discussed to aid end user programming of the home. The work presented in this thesis demonstrates a system that supports control, monitoring and programming of the home. Developers can quickly and easily add functionality to the home through components. Conflicts can be detected amongst rules within the home. Finally, design guidelines and a prototype interface have been developed to allow both technically minded and non-technical people to program their home.

Architecture et déploiement de services d'aide à la personne / Architecture and deployment of services of assistance to the person

Darwish, Molham 12 September 2016 (has links)
The ageing of the European population encouraged the community to search for solutions tosupport this evolution. In this context, several issues (related to the expensive and limited healthcare services and health facilities capacities) need to be addressed. Thus, several projects, research and industrial solutions have been proposed to address these issues. Most of these projects and industrial developments are based on the use of the latest ICT technicaldevelopments to provide solutions that ameliorate the well-being of the targeted ageing groupand to guaranty their independence in their own living spaces. The provided technologicalsolutions need to be guaranteed against potential faults which may lead to the systems failure andimpact the users’ needs and independency. In this work, we propose a home automation system representation, based on the user’s needs toprovide continuous and viable solutions that meets the users’ expectations, and ensuring theavailability of system’s services. For this goal, we propose to develop an integrated modeling framework allowing therepresentation of the home automation reconfigurable system with the consideration of a faulttolerance approach (based on the alternative definition of scenarios of system servicesdeliverance). In the proposed workflow, we describe the system structural elements (described as services andcomponents) in the design modeling view, and, we lead model transformation rules allowinggenerating an analysis model and a behavior model. The analysis model allows making a decisionabout the alternative elements selection in order to substitute the faulty elements. The analysismodel definition is based on the notion of Fault Tree Analysis approach (adopting the probabilityof events failure in order to evaluate a given system status). The behavior model is in charge of simulating the execution of the system services ensuring, thus, that the proposed scenarios lead to system services deliverance. Moreover, we propose to define an expert based feature measuring the importance of a system’scomponent within the service context. In this framework, we propose a new approach, based onthe joint integration of the importance factor into the Fault Tree Analysis approach in order to studythe criticality of the component, in case of failure, on the service continuity. We propose an experimental validation framework, based on several validation objectives toevaluate the proposed work in this research

IPv6 Home Automation

Hådén, Thor January 2009 (has links)
Home automation is the systematic controlling and monitoring of everyday home devices such as lighting, heating, window blinds and appliances (both white goods and home electronics). This report describes how to control and monitor home appliances over IPv6 by using existing home automation hardware and an Internet connected gateway. There are many commercial home automation systems available. However, these are often proprietary and/or designed for limited use. This project seeks to pave the way for IP-enabling home appliances, making such devices part of the Internet. Therefore, these devices can individually be controlled both from within the home and remotely. Internet enabling each of these devices eliminates the need for special Internet connected control units, simplifying home automation and hopefully giving yet another incentive to deploy IPv6 on a larger scale. The practical goal of this project has been to create a virtual, but practically usable, IPv6 home automation system. This has been done using existing simple home automation hardware tied to a gateway relaying uniquely addressed IPv6 command messages to the appropriate device. This gateway's only function will be to translate IPv6 commands to whatever interface the device being controlled is using (this includes translating to and from the appropriate link and physical layers). Using this platform, new applications can be created by enabling the devices to interact without relying on a central control node. The report also describes the basic design ideas of a computer connected interface to also relay information from the home automation system to the Internet.
