Inaccuracies in the Second Half of the First Season of the Medical Series, House M.D.DeBaca, Sarena, Napier, Clinton, Apgar, David, Armstrong, Edward January 2014 (has links)
Class of 2014 Abstract / Specific Aims: To assess the accuracy of the presentation (signs and symptoms), the diagnostic procedures used to arrive at the final diagnosis, and the ultimate treatment performed in each of the last ten episodes of the first season of the television medical drama, House MD. Methods: A descriptive retrospective analysis of the accuracies and inaccuracies of episodes 13 to 22 in season one of the television series House, MD. The accuracy of each episode in regards to the presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatment was rated on a scale of one to four: 1) Correct and usual representation; 2) Correct but somewhat unusual representation; 3) Correct but extremely unusual representation; 4) Incorrect representation. Both researchers evaluated each episode on the above criteria independently, and a cooperative and final rating was chosen upon. Main Results: Results of the ANOVA test did not demonstrate a statistically significant difference between the three variables (p=0.581). A Tukey HSD post-hoc test was unable to confirm if there was a significant difference between the the three variables. The average rating for the presenting signs and symptoms was 2.50 (±0.707), and 2.30 (±1.160) and 2.10 (±0.568) for diagnostic procedures and treatment, respectively. Conclusion: There was no difference in accuracies between the presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, or treatments in the last ten episodes of the first season of House,MD.

The Level of Accuracy in the Sixth Season of the Medical Television Show, House M.D.Barraclough, Jacqueline, Nguyen, NgocThuy-Grace, Apgar, David January 2014 (has links)
Class of 2014 Abstract / Specific Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of accuracy of medical information presented in the sixth season of the popular prime time medical drama, House M.D. Methods: The study was a descriptive, retrospective assessment of twelve episodes in the sixth season of the medical television show, House M.D. Three parameters were compared to reliable medical sources: signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and medical treatment for the one primary medical problem portrayed in each episode. Three researchers reviewed each episode independently and rated the accuracy of each parameter. The accuracy of each dependent variable was rated on a scale of one to four (most to least accurate, respectively). After discussion, a consensus rating was determined for all three variables for all twelve episodes. Main Results: The average accuracy scores for the signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and medical treatments were 2.08, 2.58 (ie.,least accurate), and 1.5 (ie., most accurate), respectively. The average accuracy score across the three parameters was 2.06 (correct but somewhat unusual). The one-way ANOVA analysis on the variables revealed a statistically significant difference among the groups, with a p value of 0.003. The Tukey HSD test confirmed the statistically significant difference between diagnostic procedures and treatment (p = 0.002). Conclusion: The treatments portrayed in twelve episodes of season six were judged more accurate than signs and symptoms and diagnostic procedures. The average accuracy score of the three groups determined that the medical information presented in the episodes seemed to be correct but somewhat unusual.

The Level of Accuracy in Selected Episodes of the First, Fourth, and Sixth Season of the Medical Television Drama, House M.D.Morris, Stasha, Kim, Hanna, Benson, Jackie, Apgar, David, Armstrong, Edward, Warholak, Terri January 2015 (has links)
Class of 2015 Abstract / Objectives: To assess the accuracy of the presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatments presented in the first 12 episodes of season one, the last 4 episodes of season four, and the last 7 episodes of season six of the television show, House, MD
Methods: A descriptive retrospective evaluation of the accuracy of mentioned episodes and seasons of the television series House, MD was performed. The accuracy of the presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatment in each episode was rated on a score of 1 to 4. A score of 1 represented information that was correct and average/and or usual, 2 and 3 indicated less accuracy, and 4 represented information that was not correct. Each researcher individually scored the episodes, and a final accuracy score was determined by consensus of the three reviewers. The results for seasons 4 and 6 were combined with episodes previously evaluated in other students’ projects.
Results: The ANOVA results showed no statistically significant differences among the variables in Season 1, however, the treatment was the most accurate. In both season 4 and 6, the ANOVA test did demonstrate a statistically significant difference with the treatment group being most accurate.
Conclusions: For season 1, there were no differences in accuracy of the treatments and diagnoses when compared to the signs and symptoms of each episode, however, for season 4 and 6, the treatments were more accurate than the presenting signs and symptoms and the diagnoses.

The Level of Accuracy in the Fourth Season of the Medical Television Drama, House M.D.Desamero, Xiera, Do, Hieu, Liu, Bo, Apgar, David, Armstrong, Edward January 2011 (has links)
Class of 2011 Abstract / OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of accuracy in terms of medical information presented in the popular television show, House, MD. This is part of a larger ongoing study, and evaluates only the first 11 episodes of season four.
METHODS: This study was a descriptive, retrospective assessment of the first 11 episodes in the fourth season of the medical television drama, House, MD. The signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and medical treatment for one major disease portrayed in each episode were recorded and compared to authoritative medical sources. Based on the medical resource material used, an accuracy score for each of the three above-mentioned variables in each episode was assigned. Three researchers evaluated these ratings individually. A collaborative rating was determined for all three variables for all eleven episodes.
RESULTS: The average accuracy scores for presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and medical treatments were 2.36, 1.82, and 1.91, respectively. The average accuracy score across the three variables resulted in a rating of 2.03. Episode one was excluded from the final analysis. The one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s HSD test and the Kruskal Wallis test all found no significant difference among the data. Therefore, the null hypothesis was not excluded in this analysis.
CONCLUSION: The presenting symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and medical treatments shown in the eleven episodes evaluated were not significantly different in terms of level of accuracy. The average accuracy score of the eleven episodes indicated that the information presented was correct but somewhat unusual.

Accuracy of Medical Information in the Seventh Season of the Medical Television show House, M.DFoote, Kristy, Marciano, Jackelyn, Pellerito, Joseph, Apgar, David, Armstrong, Edward, Warholak, Terri January 2016 (has links)
Class of 2016 Abstract / Objectives: To evaluate the level of accuracy of medical information presented in the seventh season of the medical drama, House M.D. To assess the accuracy of the presentation, diagnostic procedures and treatment presented in season seven.
Methods: A descriptive, retrospective assessment of the accuracy of all the episodes of the seventh season of House M.D. Three reviewers independently rated the accuracy (on a scale of one to four) for the presenting signs and symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatment in each episode. A rating of one meant a correct and usual representation while a rating of two indicated a correct but somewhat unusual representation. A three was given for a correct but extremely unusual representation and a rating of four indicated an incorrect representation. Each researcher independently rated the episodes, and an average for each rating was used for analysis.
Results: Results of the ANOVA test demonstrated no statistically significance differences between the three dependent variables (p=0.0782), therefore the Tukey HSD post-hoc test was unnecessary. The average rating for the treatment variable was 2.17 (±1.19), whereas the average ratings for the signs and symptoms and diagnosis variables were 2.74 (±0.92), and 2.87 (±1.14), respectively. The ratings for the treatment variable were more accurate compared to the other two variables.
Conclusions: All three dependent variables observed in season seven of House, MD were similar in regards to accuracy falling between a rating of 2.0-3.0 representing a correct but somewhat unusual to a correct and extremely unusual representation.

Mannen bakom stetoskopet : En studie av mansbilden i House MDNordlund, Helen January 2012 (has links)

Previous issue date: 2016-02-17 / This particular Masters Research deals with the observation of the heroic figure, considering its
mythological conception, in the attempt to comprehend the main character construction inside a
specific television genre: the series. In order to make so, the leading figure Gregory, after whom the
series was named, was taken as the primary basis. House, in this regard, not only appears as an
exceptional individual who is able to employ great logical thinking far beyond the general parameters
of common sense, but also represents many aspects of the hero’s journey in his trajectory, according to
the schematics outlined by Joseph Campbell (2000) and Christopher Vogler (1997). This study is
justified by a pattern that seems to have been established in the genre, whose characters, although
they’re driven by a heroic sentiment both in their essence and in their path, also present a misleading
conduct, characterizing them as anti-heroes at the same time. Among House’s general attributes are
boldness, obduracy in the search for answers to the medical riddles and the truth, as well as bawdry in
relation to Ethics and Moral codes, whenever these last principles threaten the achievement of his
objectives. It’s worthy mentioning, moreover, that the theoretical review gathers, aside many other
important thoughts, the intellectual production from authors like Roland Barthes (1989) and Edgar
Morin (2006), once they’ve brought significant contributions to the sum of related examinations
concerning the myth and the matter of complexity. Therefore, the present study aims to observe these
concepts under the mythic hero’s trajectory of character formalization, drawing attention to the literary
influences in the creation of modern plots given to the analyzed genre.
estudado.

Truth Begins In Lies': The Paradoxes Of Western Society In House M.D.Hagey, Jason A. 14 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The core of House M.D. is its assertion that current Western civilization lives in a perpetual state of dissonance: we desire to have the rawness of emotion but we can only handle this rawness when we combine it with intellect, even if that intellect lies to us. This is the ontological paradox that the televisual text grapples with. Through the use of archetypal analysis and allegorical interpretation, this thesis reveals that dissonance and its relationship to contemporary Western society. Through House M.D. we realize that there are structures to the paradoxes that we live and there are paradoxes in our structures. Dr. House is a trickster in an allegory of American capitalist culture. The trickster metaphorically pulls away from society the rules protecting cultural values. Dr. House and House M.D. participate in revealing the cultural disruption of the current moment of Western society. While playing on the genres of detective fiction and hospital dramas, House M.D. is an existential allegory exposing the paradox that we can never be free while still seeking our own self-interest.
