Tyzen Hsiao's Cantata: The Prodigal Son

Tyzen Hsiao (1938- ) is one of the prominent Taiwanese composers of recent years. His compositions include many different musical genres. Among them, choral music is the category of the majority. There are more than eighty choral pieces in all, some sacred and some secular. The Prodigal Son, completed in 2000, is Hsiao¡¦s principle sacred composition. It is written for five soloists, mixed chorus, and piano accompaniment. The text of the work comes from the Bible. The music is divided into eleven parts: a piano introduction, two solo and eight choral sections. All solos, choral and piano parts are constructed in a very thoughtful way; and it demonstrates good compositional techniques, originality, and correlation of text and music; therefore it is a well-composed piece. This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter One introduces the material. Chapter Two is the background of Tyzen Hsiao: Part one is a biographic sketch of Hsiao¡¦s life; Part two generally describes Hsiao¡¦s compositional development ; Part three explains the style and feature of Hsiao¡¦s musical works; Part four introduces Hsiao¡¦s choral compositions. Chapter Three focuses on analysis of The Prodigal Son, consisting of four sections. The first section is about why and how this work became a reality. The second section discusses the origin of the text. The third section is about the borrowed melody, and the last contains the musical analysis of the work. Chapter Four supplies a rehearsal technique and a teaching suggestion for the director of a performance The Prodigal Son. Chapter Five provides the writer¡¦s conclusion from the study. In the end of this thesis is an appendix which gives a phonetic transcription of The Prodigal Son in Roman letters. Hopefully it can be a helpful diction reference for conductors and singers.

The Study of Hsiao Tyzen¡¦s Piano Music With an Analysis of Piano Concerto in C Minor Op.53

Tyzen Hsiao(1938-), one of the most important Taiwanese composers in modern time, whose main contribution is to blend Taiwanese folk music into the western music, promoting and introducing it to the international stage. His compositional style is not only influenced by S. V. Rachmaninoff(1873-1943), F. Chopin(1810-1849), and B. Bartók(1881-1945), it is also strongly marked by native Taiwanese folk music. His works are numerous and his composing realm, being various and wide, includes many forms of works. The thesis discusses and analyzes different kinds of Hsiao¡¦s piano works, focusing on the melody, harmony, folkloric music material, and composing techniques, so to categorize the composing style and language of his piano works. This study includes the analysis of his representative work¡ÐPiano Concerto in C Minor, Op.53, and the related discussion of the performing skills and interpretation. This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter one describes the motivation, means and realm of the study. Chapter two presents Hsiao¡¦s life and music works and the important factors that have influenced the formation of his music style, including his life, his Christian belief, education, the background of his study of western music, and the ideal of blending eastern and western music. Chapter three focuses on a practical analysis of his piano composition style. It is categorized into four music characters: Romanticism, Taiwanese folkloric music material, the composition method of the 20th century music and the poetic music expression. Chapter four discusses his most important piano work¡ÐPiano Concerto in C Minor, Op.53. In addition, the author has met with the composer himself in order to understand the thought of his composition and receive valuable comments that have helped analyzing the entire work and the characteristics of this work. Also through the commands of critics, the author discusses the related questions of the performing skills and interpretation of this piece, so to present specific explanation and recommendation. Chapter five concludes Hsiao¡¦s piano work style, and the value and influences of his works.

Analysis of persistent organic pollutants in benthic fishes in the adjacent waters of Hsiao-Liu-Chiu,Taiwan

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have attracted the attention of scientists because they have the following characteristics: long-distance transmission, persistence, bioaccumulation and chronic toxicity. Due to their high hydrophobicity, POPs are easily absorbed by the suspended particles in the marine environment. The suspended particles then settle into the soil may pass through the food chain, resulting in bioaccumulation and biomagnifications and causing potentially hazardous effects on the environment and human health. This study focuses on the analysis of the persistent organic pollutants in different parts of 10 kinds of benthic fishes, including the muscle and visceral mass, adjacent to Hsiao-Liu-Chiu. The samples were analyzed using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE), and alumina column purification. Fifteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined by using gas chromatograph / mass spectrometer (GC/MS). After florisil column purification, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and 18 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were determined by using gas chromatograph / electron-capture detector (GC/ECD). The results showed that the concentration of PAHs range from 15 to 195 ng/g dw, with low ringed (3 rings) PAHs at a higher proportion. Total PCB concentrations range from 16 to 237 ng/g dw. The content of PCBs in muscles mainly consists of low chlorine numbers (1 to 4 chloride) -based, and in visceral and eggs the chlorine number (6 and 7 chlorine) are higher. The concentrations of OCPs range from 13 to 127 ng/g dw. Among the hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) series, £^-HCH has the highest proportion, indicating the continued use of Lidane in recent years. In addition to the variance in POP levels among different species of fishes, different tissues also have high variations in PAH, PCB and OCP levels.

CHANG, HSIAO-FENG who was famous for her essays in the mid and late 1960s has enjoyed an excellent reputation for her works and has been well-known author of a number of books for her wide-ranging artistic creation field. Especially, the achievement of her lyrical essays is remarkable with both qualities of rationality and sensibility, the style of the work is most changeful; she has many works which are imaginative and flexible language utilization; the materials of her works are diverse and the essence of her thought is rich in humane concerns. Her works not only can derive the advantages from the classic traditional cultures but also present the appearance of modern literature. In addition to the tender and sensitiveness, as a woman writer, her writing is of lightheartedness and vigor. A unique style of her essays assures her unique status in Taiwanese literary circles. The thesis sets out to study those lyrical essays which had ever been published from 1966 to 2003. First of all, we will provide an objective look at the external factors such as the experience of the writer, the characteristics of literature, and the conditions of her lyrical essays creation in order to gain a more comprehensive understanding on the features of her works. At last, we sum up and clear out the plentiful content of her works which is full of the effects of the artistic achievements on her literary skills. Hoping that the unique meaning and value of CHANG, HSIAO-FENG's lyrical essays in Taiwan literary circles can be identified. This thesis consists of five chapters: Chapter One is ¡§Introduction¡¨ which presents the motives, objectives, the review of the previous studies, the definition of ¡§lyrical essays¡¨, and the establishment of the research scope as well as the research method. Chapter Two is the general discussion of CHANG, HSIAO-FENG and her lyrical essays. We will focus on an all-dimensional discussion of her life experience and divide her life into three stages to indicate that how the life experience influence her works and to explore her own endeavors in engaging in both of creation and editing and the results. This is the preparation for discussing her works. Secondly, we explore the concept of literature. We describe her idea and principle on the literature and creation relating to the discussion of her works as the foundation of cross reference. Moreover, this paper tries to give a general overview of her essay topics and the change of the styles of works at different stages. Chapter Three. ¡§Evolution of her works.¡¨ We review and summarize the content of lyrical essays at different stages. This thesis aims to explore and analyze from three aspects to present the status of her emotions and a broad perspectives on human concerns of CHANG, HSIAO-FENG. Chapter Four. ¡§Artistic Skills.¡¨ We review her lyrical essays and put her great achievements on the artistic skills in order synthetically. With the investigations from four aspects, we sense the outstanding artistic achievements on the skills of the lyrical essays. Chapter Five is ¡§Conclusion¡¨. The author briefly summarizes the critics and suggestions in previous studies from chapter one to four. We place the meaning and value of CHANG, HSIAO-FENG¡¦s essays in the objective and fair positioning. The writer brings out the suggestive guideline for the research workers in the future.
