Servervirtualisering : En jämförelse av hypervisorer

<p>Virtualisering av servrar är på frammarsch och ser ut att bli ett mer och mer frekvent inslag i datacenter världen över. När virtualisering ska införas i en organisation eller företag är det därför viktigt att veta om sina behov och därifrån sedan välja en virtualiseringslösning som passar.Denna rapport presenterar en jämförelse av de tre hypervisorer som är ledande på marknaden för virtualisering; VMware ESXi, Citrix XenServer och Microsoft Hyper-V. Den första delen av jämförelsen innefattar granskning av funktionalitet hos hypervisorerna, så som stöd för gästoperativsystem och hårdvarustöd. Den andra delen av jämförelsen mäter prestandan på de tre hypervisorerna på gästoperativsystemen Windows Server 2008, Suse Linux Enterprise Server 11 och Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS.Prestandatester utförs med SysBench och de komponenter som testas är processor, RAM-minne och hårddisk. Resultaten visar på varierande resultat för de olika hårdvarukomponenterna på de olika systemen som testats.</p>

The purpose of master’s thesis is to project virtualization solution together with replication of the servers. Thesis is divided into the three parts and that it theoretical, analytical and projection part. In analytical part there are basic information about virtualization technologies, in analytical part there is analysis of the present status of the company and mainly about status of the IT infrastructure and in the end projection part there is realization of the virtualization solution from choosing the right type of cluster to choosing hardware solution.

Det här arbetet hade målet att undersöka vilken storlek förlusten av resurser som Hyper-V och Windows Server container introducerar när ett system delas upp med dessa. Genom att testa detta skulle man också kunna jämföra Microsofts implementering av containerbaserad virtualisering med Linux implementering och se om det finns några likheter. För att kunna jämföra med tidigare forskning fanns målet att försöka efterlikna metoden i tidigare forskning som gjort liknande tester i operativsystemet Linux med KVM och LXC så nära som möjligt. Resultaten visades sig till stor del överensstämma med resultaten på tester genomförda i Linux. Det vill säga att container-baserad virtualisering har överlag en mindre förlust av resurser än hypervisor-baserad virtualisering. Undantaget var dock nätverkstesterna där container-baserad virtualisering presterade sämst men även detta överensstämde med tidigare forskning. / This work had the goal of looking at the loss of resources that Hyper-V and Windows Server container introduce when a system is partitioned with these. By testing this, you could also compare Microsoft's implementation of container-based virtualization with Linux implementation and see if there are any similarities. To be able to compare with previous research, the goal was to try to mimic the method in previous research that made similar tests in the Linux operating system with KVM and LXC as close as possible. The results were largely consistent with the results of tests conducted in Linux. That is, container-based virtualization generally has a smaller loss of resources than hypervisor-based virtualization. The exception was, however, the network tests where container-based virtualization performed poorest, but this also was consistent with previous research.

The theoretical part of this thesis is devoted to familiarization with the technology of cloud computing, virtualization technology, data storage problems and Petri nets. Followed by the practical part, the first part discusses the various technologies which are VMware ESX, Citrix Xen, Hyper -V, KVM and oVirt. The following part is a summary of the characteristics of each technology and an output of this summary is a decision tree which is intended to help to select the appropriate virtualization technology. The second part is dedicated to the implementation of an application used for storing data in the database depending on the sensitivity of data. The thesis includes the final economic evaluation and discussion as well.

The diploma thesis deals with the possibilities of using application virtualization in the Windows environment. The theoretical part describes the operating principle of application virtualization. Furthermore, there are specified the individual characteristics and the reasons for the move to application virtualization. The author provides the basic overview and comparison of the specific ways of virtualization. The appropriate solution of the practical part was based on the Saaty method. In the practical part, the author describes in detail how to implement and use the chosen technology. Based on practical experience, he assesses functioning of the solution. The final part of the thesis includes both general and specific recommendations for the use of application virtualization.

Meltdown and Spectre are two vulnerabilities discovered in 2017. These vulnerabilities allow unauthorized users to extract confidential information from systems. Security patches have been developed to resolve these vulnerabilities, but with a potental performance loss. This report investigates how PHP is affected by Microsofts web server IIS, with the security patch developed by Microsoft to protect systems against Meltdown and Spectre applied. In a practical laboratory experiment, the JMeter tool has been used to create a simulated load on the web server system, where PHPts CPU usage is monitored and noted for further analysis. The result shows that there has been a 13.74% performance loss with Microsofts security patch applied. This opens up for discussion about what Microsofts security patch actually does in a system, and if there is a suffciently large degradation to consider a transition to another solution.
