Economic growth and the use of non-renewable energy resourcesPérez-Barahona, Agustín 29 March 2007 (has links)
This thesis is a contribution to the analysis of the relationship between the economic growth and the usage of non-renewable energy resources. More precisely, it is studied the conditions under which energy-saving technologies can sustain long-run growth, even if energy is mainly produced by means of non-renewable energy resources, such as fossil fuels. A general equilibrium framework is considered, giving special attention to the dynamical properties of the economy. In accordance with the well-known debate of complementarity vs. substitutability
between physical capital and energy as production inputs, this thesis is divided into two parts.
The first part of this thesis assumes complementarity between physical capital and energy as production inputs, which captures the
idea of the existence of a minimum energy requirement to use a machine. Even if in contrast with the standard literature on non-renewable energy resources, which assumes substitutability, the assumption of complementarity is indeed supported by various empirical studies. This relationship of complementarity allows one to introduce the assumption of different generations of machines coexisting in each period by adding a new variable to the firm's problem: physical capital replacement. In this first part of the thesis, it is provided a theoretical study of physical capital replacement, i.e., vintage effect, which is an important environmental policy when new machines are assumed to be more energy-saving.
Following the standard literature on non-renewable energy resources, this second part of the thesis assumes substitutability between capital and energy. This branch of the literature gives central position to physical capital accumulation to offset the constraint on production possibilities due to use of non-renewable energy resources. This literature assumes the same technology for both physical capital accumulation and consumption, which implies (among other things) that the energy intensity of both sectors is the same. However, data do not support this implication and suggest that physical capital accumulation is relatively more energy-intensive than consumption. Following
that, this second part of the thesis studies the implications of this hypothesis.

Stokes' Phenomenon arising from the confluence of two simple polesHorrobin, Calum January 2018 (has links)
We study certain confluences of equations with two Fuchsian singularities which produce an irregular singularity of Poincaré rank one. We demonstrate a method to understand how to pass from solutions with power-like behavior which are analytic in neighbourhoods to solutions with exponential behavior which are analytic in sectors and have divergent asymptotic behavior. We explicitly calculate the Stokes' matrices of the confluent system in terms of the monodromy data, specifically the connection matrices, of the original system around the merging singularities. The confluence of Gauss' hypergeometric equation gives an excellent opportunity to show our approach with a concrete example. We explicitly show how the Stokes' data arise in the confluences of the isomonodromic deformation problems for the Painlevé equations PVI to PV and PV to PIII(D6).

movMF: An R Package for Fitting Mixtures of von Mises-Fisher DistributionsHornik, Kurt, Grün, Bettina 07 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Finite mixtures of von Mises-Fisher distributions allow to apply model-based clustering methods to data which is of standardized length, i.e., all data points lie on the unit sphere. The R package movMF contains functionality to draw samples from finite mixtures of von
Mises-Fisher distributions and to fit these models using the expectation-maximization algorithm
for maximum likelihood estimation. Special features are the possibility to use
sparse matrix representations for the input data, different variants of the expectationmaximization
algorithm, different methods for determining the concentration parameters
in the M-step and to impose constraints on the concentration parameters over the components.
In this paper we describe the main fitting function of the package and illustrate its
application. In addition we compare the clustering performance of finite mixtures of
von Mises-Fisher distributions to spherical k-means. We also discuss the resolution of
several numerical issues which occur for estimating the concentration parameters and for
determining the normalizing constant of the von Mises-Fisher distribution. (authors' abstract)

Para a demonstração desses resultados usaremos identidades combinatórias e alguns resultados sobre determinantes / Abstract: In this paper we approach two results on plane partitions. The first, the MacMahon's Fundamental Theorem, gives us a formula for the generating function of plane partitions of a natural number n, whose version of the demonstration will be presented here was the proof given by L. Carlitz in 1967. The second, MacMahon's Conjecture, gives us a formula for the generating function for symmetric plane partitions of a natural number n with at most s rows and with each part at most j, this, as proven by George Andrews in 1979 with an elegant combinatorial argument. For the demonstration of these results we will use combinatorial identities and some results on determinants / Mestrado / Matematica Aplicada / Mestre em Matemática Aplicada

Abstract: In this work, we present new bijective proofs for identities related to partitions into distinct even parts, generalizations of Rogers-Ramanujan identities, among others. The basic aim is to work with overpartitions of integers, give a new interpretation in terms of three-line matrices. We will show bijective proofs for some classes of overpartitions. We will present a new result that is how to identify an overpartition (with some particularities) with plane partitions; which is one of the most important results. At the end we will present some applications of the representation of a partition as a two-line array: closed formulaes for some classes of these partitions. / Doutorado / Análise Combinatória / Doutor em Matemática Aplicada

Antieigenvalues of Wishart MatricesCalderon, Simon January 2020 (has links)
In this thesis we derive the distribution for the first antieigenvalue for a random matrix with distribution W ∼ Wp(n, Ip) for p = 2 and p = 3. For p = 2 we present a proof that the first antieigenvalue has distribution β((n−1)/2, 1). For p = 3 we prove that the probability density function can be expressed using a sum of hypergeometric functions. Besides the main objective, the thesis seeks to introduce the theory of multivariate statistics and antieigenvalues.

Open/closed correspondence and mirror symmetryYu, Song January 2023 (has links)
We develop the mathematical theory of the open/closed correspondence, proposed by Mayr in physics as a class of dualities between open strings on Calabi-Yau 3-folds and closed strings on Calabi-Yau 4-folds. Given an open geometry on a toric Calabi-Yau 3-orbifold relative to a framed Aganagic-Vafa outer brane, we construct a closed geometry on a toric Calabi-Yau 4-orbifold and establish the correspondence between the two geometries on the following levels across both the A- and B-sides of mirror symmetry: numerical Gromov-Witten invariants; generating functions of Gromov-Witten invariants; B-model hypergeometric functions and Givental-style mirror theorems; Picard-Fuchs systems and solutions; integral cycles on Hori-Vafa mirrors and periods; mixed Hodge structures.
