Evaluating the effects of the self-advocacy strategy on student participation in educational meetings for middle school students with disabilities

This study examined the effects of the Self-Advocacy Strategy delivered via the CD (i.e., SACD) on self-advocacy skills of fifteen middle school students with mild and moderate disabilities. A pre-/and posttest experimental design with random assignment to treatment or wait-list control groups was employed to investigate changes in student participation and level of self-determination post-intervention. The SACD instruction addressed essential self-advocacy skills, including knowledge of self and communication. Results showed significant differences in favor of the treatment group when compared with the wait-list control group concerning student participation, as measured by student responses to a set of 10 IEP related questions. In addition, generalization data indicated positive results for student participation, as measured by student use of SHARE behaviors, for the majority of students in the treatment group in informal educational meetings with their special educators. The results provide additional support for the use of SACD to teach self-advocacy and active student participation in the IEP process to middle school students with disabilities.

Transitioning Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder from School to Society

High school administrators in a rural school district were providing transition planning to students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in order to meet postschool transition goals. Despite these efforts, few students with ASD were employed or enrolled in postsecondary training, and parents reported that they were dissatisfied with the postschool transition process. The purpose of this collective case study was to explore parental and staff perceptions of the postschool transition processes of students with ASD to increase the understanding of the practice related to postschool transitions. Guided by Tinto and Pusser's institutional framework, research questions were focused on the experiences of parents and staff, including teachers and support personnel, with the postschool transition process of students with ASD. A purposeful sample of 25 participants, including the first 10 parents of students with ASD who applied and the staff who supported them, were interviewed. Teachers were also observed during the postschool transition process. Archival postschool transition survey data were also analyzed. Themes were identified through application of open coding and thematic analysis to interviews, observations, and survey data and included: parents and teachers need support [reference guide and professional development (PD)] and stakeholder collaboration is crucial to success even though time is a constraint and skills prioritization is evident in Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). Teachers used IEPs to guide the postschool transition process, but parental concerns remained. Therefore, a PD for teachers and reference guide for parents were created for the local site to improve parental trust of the postschool transition process for students with ASD.

Effects of Direct Instruction Common Core Math on Students With Learning Disabilities

U.S. students with learning disabilities' math skills acquisition has been on the decline in recent years. Studies show that teachers using traditional methods of teaching math lack knowledge of task analysis, chunking, sequencing, mass practice, modeling, and repetition of instruction. These components of direct instruction or pedagogical activities are hallmarks of special education teaching and are collectively described as cognitive support pedagogy. The study evaluated direct instruction teaching strategies to teach Common Core math to middle school students with learning disabilities, to determine if the current downward trend in math skills acquisition amongst them can be reversed. The theoretical framework of this study was based on Watson's theory of behavioral psychology as it applied to learning and teaching. The participants consisted of a convenience sample of students with learning disabilities. The study used a Solomon 4-group experimental design, in a series of two One-way ANOVAs to measure differences in math score by intervention for pretested and for non-pretested students, with one Factorial 2 X 2 ANOVA which measured for differences by interaction between pre-testing and intervention. Results of ANOVAs were significant at the α-levels of .05 (F (1,78) = 233.66 p < .001), indicating that significant differences existed in math scores of pre-tested students who received intervention and those who did not. The study is significant to teachers, curriculum developers, and instructional leaders because it is the first study of its kind to measure the outcomes of Common Core math using direct instruction and it points a way forward to creating positive social change by increasing students' graduation rates and promoting students' engagement in school and beyond.
