Intertwinements: Building Community Through Intertwining ConditionsFreireich, Jenna Leigh 31 May 2024 (has links)
To intertwine: to twist or connect together. Intertwinement can be two or more elements, physical or metaphysical, that interlace and fuse with one another. Architecture that is designed for people and the human experience, as all architecture should be, must be intertwined in many ways at a variety of scales. As said by Steven Holl in his book titled "Intertwining", "By weaving form, space, and light, architecture can elevate the experience of daily life through the various phenomena that emerge from specific sites, programs, and architectures." Architecture that intertwines with its surroundings and encourages entwinements within is what impacts and builds the human experience.
Throughout this year long exploration, ideas of intertwinements have been a reoccurring theme that's been studied under three main concepts:
•Relationships – Perceptual and physical relationships, the relationship of the building to the site, and how the architecture impacts human relationships and interactions.
•Ideas of pushing and pulling as a condition of intertwinement •Ideas of unrestrictive, loose, ambiguous boundaries These three main concepts were analyzed at a variety of scales including site scale, building scale, and spatial or room scale. Each example of these ideas at varying scales is in the form of a duality, exploring how two or more opposing ideas intersect and entwine with one another. These dualities include:
•nature/campus
•movement/node
•stone/glass
•social/recreational/study
•together/separate
•in/out
•table/object
•active/quiet
•large group/small group/individual
Examples of these dualities of intertwinements were studied through the design of a residence hall on Virginia Tech's campus to explore how the architecture of a residence hall can also contribute to building community and fostering an inclusive environment. / Master of Architecture / Through the design of a residence hall, ideas of intertwinements are explored and studied. To intertwine means to be twisted or connected together. The thesis explores how the architecture of a residence hall can also contribute to building community and fostering an inclusive environment. In order to do this, ideas and conditions of intertwinements were studied under three main concepts:
•Relationships – Perceptual and physical relationships, the relationship of the building to the site, and how the architecture impacts human relationships and interactions.
•Ideas of pushing and pulling as a condition of intertwinement •Ideas of unrestrictive, loose, ambiguous boundaries

Vliv proinkluzivního edukačního prostředí na postoje žáků vůči osobám se znevýhodněním / Impact of inclusive environment for pupils attitudes towards persons with disabilityZilcher, Ladislav January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation is conceived as a theoretical - empirical study, which is focused on modifications in attitudes of fourth and fifth grade pupils towards people with disabilities. The research is based on three possible influences for attitudes, (1) the effect of classmate with disability on pupils' attitudes towards people with disability, (2) teacher's approach to the issue, their inclusive teaching competences and the effect on pupils' attitudes and (3) if school and its inclusive setting (which is represented by schools with "Fair school" certificate) has any influence on pupils' attitudes towards persons with disabilities. We try to explain one elemental empirical question by dealing with these three particular research issues. Does inclusive environment have positive influence on fourth and fifth grade pupils towards people with disabilities? We decided to choose a quasiexperimental design of this study to answer this question. Two validated empirical instruments were used in the research, they were administrated on a sample that consists of 1948 pupils from fourth and fifth grades and (their) 102 teachers. The acquired data were processed by appropriate statistical methods. Our outcomes partly confirmed the assumption that inclusive environment may have an impact on pupils' attitude towards...

In detail, it deals with its position in the Czech education system based on legislation, as well as with its particular implementation. The aim of the research is to explore experience of Czech teachers with homeschooled children after their inclusion to school, emphasizing the possible benefit of homeschooled children as the source of inclusive environment in regular school. The data was collected through the method of non-standardized semi-structured interviews. These were created according to ten children describing own experience with adaptation to school after being homeschooled (received during the pilot study) and according to Booth and Ainscow's Ukazatel inkluze (Rytmus o. s., 2007). The research includes forty-one Czech teachers who experienced working with children homeschooled for at least two years. Besides other things, the survey shows that nearly three quarters of the participating teachers observed differences in these children, as opposed to the rest of the class, and more than a half noticed...

This study aims at investigating the communication and language competences of teachers in an English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) context and examining how these competences influence teacher-student communication and subsequently impact students’ learning experiences. To reach this aim, the research questions focused on what teachers and students find necessary about EMI yoga teacher competences, how these affect students’ learning experiences, how the teachers adapt their teachings and what challenges they face. The study was qualitative and conducted with online interviews. As a result, teachers and students identified several competences to do with building rapport, creating an inclusive environment, language proficiency and language instruction pedagogy. Students state that teachers’ authenticity, adaptability, and ability to being open to non-judgemental communication alongside with other competences significantly affect their learning experience. There are four strategies which help teachers to adapt to the group, namely code switching, demonstration, asking students for help and slowing down the pace. Teachers encountered challenges such as translation issues, fears and lack of confidence, lack of general English proficiency and specialized vocabulary in the beginning of their careers, but over time these challenges were overcome. The study can be of help in yoga teacher training courses to help students master the communication and language competences quicker, or these can be used to create a self-study student book which can help teachers to improve their communication and language skills inteaching yoga using EMI.
