Valle-Inclán: o intelectual e suas perspectivas sobre América Hispânica (1920-1931) / Valle-Inclan: the intellectual and their perspectives on Hispanic America (1920-1931)

Alves, Ulisses Viana 13 April 2016 (has links)
I intend to analyze in this research the Valle-Inclán\'s intellectual trajectory as an artist that produced some interpretations about Hispanic America in the context of Independence Centenary Celebrations. Also intend to analyze the intellectual contacts between Valle-Inclán and hispanicamerican intellectuals that were important to produce its masterpiece Tirano Banderas. This research is only possible because it recently was published Valle-Inclán\'s vast collection of letters.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Leonildo Jose Figueira.pdf: 4430409 bytes, checksum: 6f0608f525f9a563cbe625d45e20b8ea (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-08-18 / During the 19th Century, several adventurers, mainly European, roamed the Brazilian territory, producing countless reports which are used as sources for the study of the land, people and nature or the time, since such travel literature deals with the experience of contact. Such reports are not only sources of information about Brazil, but also indicate important interpretative lines of Brazilian history. As such, this work tries to study one of the most noteworthy scholars of the 19th Century, Richard Francis Burton, born in 1821 in Torquay e deceased in 1890, in Trieste. This voyager lived during a very important time in politics for his country, the Reign of Queen Victoria of England. He was a military, diplomat, scientist, naturalist, author translator, and so on, and a known explorer of the African continent, where he involved himself in daredevil expeditions beside John Hanning Speke, being at the center of the debates about the source of the Nile. In Brasil, Burton was the British consul at Santos, between 1865 and 1869, writing several important voyage reports and a narrative on the Paraguayan war and the Brazilian context of the time, in the form of letters, sent to an anonymous character: “Z...”. In the work Letters from the Battlefield of Paraguay, published in London (1870), Richard Burton gathered 27 letters, the first one written in Montevideo in August 11, 1868, and the last one written in em Buenos Aires in April 21, 1869, after he visited the battlefields twice (from August 17 to September 5, 1868) and from April 4 to 18, 1869). We will analyze the peculiar trajectory of this traveler, as well as his “social place”, his reports which go beyond picturesque observation and are historical sources for studies about the people, landscape, nature, social relations, conflicts, etc. We will study the interests he had which made him travel through Brasil and the Plata region, where the Paraguayan war took place, as well as his representations and relationships established in these territories.

Barros, Ivan Kowaleski Figueira de 19 April 2017 (has links)
This work investigates how romantic ideas were introduced in Italy after 1816. Ernst Gombrich and the memory of Aby Warburg : emotion identity and scholarship

Finch, Matthew Edward January 2007 (has links)
This thesis in intellectual history examines the work of art historian Ernst Gombrich (1909-2001), one-time Director of London's Warburg Institute, on that institute's founder, Aby Warburg (1866-1929). The memory of War burg, as evoked in Gombrich's scholarship, is investigated as a focal point for contemporary concerns on the part of Gombrich and his peers, and as an influence on Warburg's reception in 20th century scholarship. The thesis gives a close account of Gombrich's particular intellectual achievements, in order better to understand his status as a figure of great popular and academic significance in mid-to-Iate 20th century art history and art theory. Gombrich was an emigre who left his native Austria for the United Kingdom in the 1930s and this thesis also considers the impact on intellectual history of the mid-20th century emigration from Central Europe, which was driven by ethnonationalist and above all Nazi persecution. Specifically, the thesis examines the significance for Gombrich's work of his Austrian background, in terms of both the German-language humanist culture of Bi/dung and Gombrich's sense, as a person of Jewish background, of Jewish identity. Using a methodology informed by the anthropology of emotions and the discipline of memory studies, Warburg is approached specifically as a lieu de memoire on Pierre Nora's model. The argument is that Gombrich invested his own concerns in his scholarly representations of the older art historian. The means by which this investment was made, and the negotiation of this investment amongst Gombrich's colleagues at the Warburg Institute, are traced through archival research. The impact of Gombrich's investment in Warburg on the older art historian's subsequent, posthumous reception in academia is examined, and the potential for alternative visions of Warburg marginalised by Gombrich's representation is also considered.

Lorenz Stein and German socialism, 1835-1872

Siclovan, Diana January 2015 (has links)
This thesis traces the intellectual trajectory of Lorenz Stein (1815-1890), a German legal scholar and political thinker who, despite being a significant theorist during his lifetime, is an obscure figure today, especially in Anglophone scholarship. It focuses on Stein's writings on socialism and argues that they provide crucial insights into the changing nature of socialist thought in the mid-nineteenth century. It contributes to the project of departing from a Marxist interpretation of the history of socialism that has long been predominant, and uses Stein's intellectual biography to illustrate how contingent political, cultural and personal factors have shaped both the creation and reception of socialist ideas.

Cartografia das relações: as condições da produção intelectual e os percursos da escrita histórica de Jaime Cortesão no Brasil (1940-1957) / Cartography of relationships: the conditions of intellectual production and paths of Jaime Cortesãos historical writing in Brazil (1940-1957)

Ribeiro, David William Aparecido 23 October 2015 (has links)
Jaime Cortesão (1884-1960) lived in Brazil between 1940 and 1957 and during this period constituted most part of his historiographical work. Emigrated from Portugal by Salazar pressure, he has enjoyed quite privileged conditions to his intellectual production; both government institutions in which he worked as well as the relationships he has cultivated favored those conditions. The analysis of the conditions of his intellectual production in Brazil allows illuminate issues of cultural policy and production of knowledge in the context of Vargas government. Taking into consideration that national identity, modernity, the country internalization were some of the issues which mobilized the national intelligence, I aim in this paper identify the connections between Cortesão works and the intense debate promoted within and outside the Brazilian state apparatus. In this respect, his performance at the National Library and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, magnified by intense collaboration in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro press, raises reflections on the paths of his writing about the history of Portuguese colonization. From the author\'s point of view, the colonizing action is led by pioneers and is the creator of a Portuguese-Tupi family of symbiotic relationships between settlers and natives from the Sao Paulo plateau These concepts, which are also found in the historical exhibition commemorating the fourth centenary of the founding of the city of São Paulo (1954), organized by Cortesão in the set of a large event, locally and nationally significant, allowed Portugal to keep present inside the Brazilian identity and participate considerably of the celebration of Brazil\'s entry into modernity.

Because of previous research made for the History's course final paper, we found that the author organized a countermovement to the growing of ideological and cultural modernization that the Northeast of Brazil was experiencing in the mid-1920s, rallying almost every intellectuals of the region around the heated debate between regionalists and modernists. Thus, we analyzed if such events could have influenced him in some way in the choice of subject and in the writing of his major work. Furthermore, we also analyzed if the fact that the young Freyre have officially joined the Pernambuco government, between 1927 and 1930 as Estacio Coimbra's chief of staff, could have implemented any effective change in Pernambuco, especially in traditional-regionalistic kinds of changes. With those questions in mind, we analyzed his career since his academic education overseas, between 1918 and 1923, until his escape to exile in Portugal in 1930.

The political thought of Tan Malaka

Crawford, Oliver January 2019 (has links)
In the course of a fairly brief lifetime, lasting only a little over fifty years (1897-1949), Tan Malaka was variously a schoolteacher, the chair of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI), a Comintern agent, a political exile, and a revolutionary leader. He travelled the world, living for spells in the Netherlands, Germany, Russia, China, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Tan Malaka's colourful life and political career have attracted comment from historians, but there has not yet been an in-depth treatment of his ideas, even though he produced a large corpus of writings and was acknowledged to be among the foremost political intellects of his generation in Indonesia. This thesis is an analysis and contextualization of Tan Malaka's political thought. It places his writings within a series of contemporary debates: on the nature of the Indonesian past and the country's potential for revolution; on imperialism and the post-colonial future of Asia; on the relationship between Islam, capitalism, and Communism; on the reformation of Indonesian thinking; and on the appropriate strategy and goals for the Indonesian revolution. These debates, and Tan Malaka's interventions within them, reveal that Indonesia during the 'national awakening' period (1900-50) was the scene of great intellectual innovation, where foreign and indigenous concepts were fused, adapted and reworked. Tan Malaka's writings provide a particularly vivid example of this, combining as they do the concepts and language of Marxism, Islamic morality, and Minangkabau custom, sometimes in tension, in other places flowing together without apparent strain. Tan Malaka was not unique in this respect, as the thesis shows, which suggests that late- colonial Indonesia provides promising terrain for the 'global turn' in intellectual history, that seeks to understand the circulation, interaction and transformation of ideas across national and cultural boundaries, especially in the non-Western world.
