Analisadas a partir de suas características próprias, as cartas configuram um importante testemunho sobre a literatura italiana do século XX, neste caso, especialmente, entre os anos de 1947 e 1969. Considerada como gênero literário, a correspondência - primeira manifestação das escritas de si - ao permitir adentrarmos o espaço cultural, social e histórico do missivista, nos garante observar ações que são inerentes à sua personalidade não só como editor e crítico literário, mas como indivíduo atuante na política de seu país. A leitura das cartas do escritor italiano revela o ambiente de suas atividades crítico-literárias, bem como seus pensamentos adquiridos a partir de suas vivências pessoais e profissionais a partir da Segunda Guerra Mundial. O primeiro capítulo, então, tratará do contexto histórico que precede à primeira carta do livro datada de 1947, e o cenário descrito inclui a participação da Itália na Segunda Grande Guerra, os reflexos do desastre na política, na economia e na vida da população, além do movimento de Resistência: a luta armada de oposição ao fascismo. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The dissertation is dedicated to the study of the missives of the Italian writer Italo Calvino (1923-1985) contained in the book I libri degli altri (1991), organized by Giovanni Tesio. Analyzed by their own characteristics, the letters constitute an important testimony on Italian literature of the twentieth century, in this case, especially between the years of 1947 and 1969. Considered as a literary genre, correspondence - the first manifestation of the self-writing - allowing us to penetrate the cultural, social and historical space of the writer, assures us to observe actions that are inherent to his personality not only as an editor and literary critic, but as an active individual in the politics of his country. The reading of the letters of the Italian writer reveals the atmosphere of his critical-literary activities, as well as his thoughts acquired from his personal and professional experiences from the World War II. The first chapter will discuss the historical context that precedes the first letter of the book dating from 1947, and the scenario described includes Italy's participation in World War II, the repercussions of the disaster on politics, economy and the life of the population, in addition to the Resistance movement: the armed struggle of opposition to fascism. Analizzate dalle loro caratteristiche, le lettere costituiscono un'importante testimonianza della letteratura italiana del XX secolo, specialmente tra gli anni 1947 e 1969. Considerata come un genere letterario, la corrispondenza - la prima manifestazione di sé - ci permette di penetrare nello spazio culturare, sociale e storico dello scrittore e ci assicura di osservare le azioni che sono inerenti alla sua personalità non solo come redattore e critico letterario, ma come individuo attivo nella politica del suo paese. La lettura delle lettere dello scrittore italiano rivela l'atmosfera delle sue attività critico-letterarie, così come i suoi pensieri acquisiti dalle sue esperienze personali e preofessionali dalla Seconda Guerra Mondiale. <p> This research study was conducted with the intention of determining the most common errors that occur in the development of Italian oral language skills among 102 students participating in a 90/10 (90% in Italian/10% in English) dual language program offered at a California public elementary school. The 90/10 program breaks down instruction as follows: Kfirst grade 90% instruction in the target language/10% in English; in second grade 80/20; in third grade, 70/30; in fourth, 60/40, and in fifth, 50/50. Although the ratios change, the program is officially known as 90/10. The students in this study, a mixed group ranging from first to fifth grade, observed a series of pictures representing a story, which they then had to orally tell in their own words. The oral presentations were recorded and then transcribed word by word, including pauses and hesitations. The productions were then analyzed in depth, with special attention given to hesitations, the insertion of phrases and/or words in English, errors with lexical choice and grammatical errors (auxiliary verb choice, as well as the usage of subjects, verbs, and pronouns). The results from this study demonstrate that the age of the student influences second language oral fluency. In general, students with more schooling tended to commit fewer errors in their oral production. However, some categories of errors did not seem to be affected by the length of time students had been enrolled in the program. It is hypothesized that some errors persist due to the decreased amount of Italian instruction that characterizes the upper years in the program.</p><p>

Orientador: Francisco Cláudio Alves Marques / Banca: Gabriela Kvacek Betella / Banca: Altamir Botoso / Resumo: Na primeira fase do Novecentos literário italiano muitos folhetins franceses do século XIX foram reeditados por jornais italianos, alcançando grande sucesso de público, motivando Antonio Gramsci a encetar uma discussão em torno da inexistência de uma literatura "nacional-popular" italiana que traduzisse efetivamente as inquietações da época e as necessidades do povo, como tinha ocorrido na França. No entanto, desde 1900, o crítico literário Giuseppe Antonio Borgese vinha resenhando autores que publicavam romances à moda do folhetim francês nas páginas dos periódicos e das revistas italianas que naquele começo de século se multiplicavam e abriam suas páginas para um público mais amplo e diversificado, sobretudo, feminino. Atentos à chamada literatura de consumo, esses periódicos abriram espaço para a escrita feminina, ajudando a introduzir no cenário literário da época mulheres como Maria Messina, cujo romance de estréia, La casa nel vicolo, foi publicado em capítulos, à moda do "feuilleton" francês, nas páginas da revista Nuova Antologia de Lettere, Scienze ed Arti, em 1920. Nesta pesquisa, pretendemos identificar e enumerar as técnicas folhetinescas utilizadas por Maria Messina em La casa nel vicolo, de modo que se torne visível à influência do gênero em sua narrativa. / Abstract: In the first phase of the Italian Novecento, many French 19th-century serials were reissued by Italian newspapers, reaching great success of audience, motivating Antonio Gramsci to enter into a discussion around the absence of a "national-popular" Italian literature which translates effectively the concerns and the needs of the people, as had occurred in France. However, since 1900, the literary critic Giuseppe Antonio Borgese had been reviewing authors who published French-style novels in the pages of periodicals and Italian magazines, which, at the beginning of the century multiplied and opened its pages to a broader and diverse audience, especially, female. Attentive to the consumer literature call, these periodicals have opened space for the writing women, helping to introduce in the literary scene of the time women like Maria Messina, whose debut novel, La casa nel vicolo, was published in chapters, like the French "feuilleton", in the pages of the magazine Nuova Antologia de Lettere, Scienze ed Arti in 1920. The objective of this paper is to present the serial techniques that are used by the authoress in his novel La casa nel vicolo, so that becomes visible the influence of gender in his narrative. / Astratto: La scrittrice siciliana Maria Messina è tra alcuni donne che nella prima fase del Novecento letterario italiano, si distacca nella lotta dal riconoscimento letterario, descrivendo il suo mondo attraverso della prospettiva patriarcale, inoltre su che si riferisce alla condizione femminile. Per tale strategie, la scrittrice usi il suo romanzo La casa nel vicolo, pubblicato nel 1920, "a puntate", dalla rivista Nuova Antologia di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, al fine di collaborare con la letteratura di consumo di cui il giornali e le riviste sono associati. Con tematiche prossime al cotidiano e al momento storico, i lettori si trovanno con i drami della vita, con la vittimizzazione dei essere e la opressione dell'individuo piú debole, in altre parole, le donne. Basando in questi fattori, le tecniche del "feuilleton" sarà necessario per comprovare la inserzione della opera della scrittrice siciliana, nel genere "feuilleton". L'obiettivo di questo studio è quello di presentare le tecniche seriali che vengono utilizzate da Maria Messina nel suo romanzo La casa nel vicolo, in modo che rende visibile l'influenza del genere nel suo romanzo. / Mestre

One of Ariosto’s signature narrative features in the Orlando furioso is the use of personae—such as the Inkeeper in Canto 28—to tell stories. These narrator stand-ins allow for Ariosto to displace unsavory perspectives via narrative ventriloquism, where the teller is condemned while the scandalous tale is still allowed to be told. This paper explores how English translators have adapted Ariosto’s use of narrative personae in their translations of the Orlando furioso, exploiting these voices in their translations for sociopolitical ends. In some instances, Ariosto himself becomes a ventriloquized presence in the translations, a source author persona who voices the translator’s projected misogynistic or salacious content.
