The correct identification and age determination of insect species involved in cadaver decomposition is of particular importance in estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI) in forensic sciences, particularly since the PMI is based on information on the life cycle of necrophagous insects. However, the correct identification of several insects species, especially in their immature stages, is difficult even for experienced taxonomists. In addition to the minuscule morphological differences between several species, there are some variables such as temperature and toxic substances that may affect the developmental time of insects, generating errors in the estimate of the PMI. Among the insects that are involved in cadaver decomposition, maggots of blowflies (Calliphoridae) are often the most important consumers of carrion and are present in all stages of decomposition. Thus, this study aimed to characterize morphologically and to evaluate the developmental time and the thermal requirements of the immature stages of two species of blowflies reared in different temperatures: Hemilucilia segmentaria (Fabricius) e Hemilucilia semidiaphana (Rondani) (Calliphoridae). All experiments were done in growth chambers with temperatures set at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35ºC, photophase of 12 hours and relative humidity at 70%. The maggots were reared using an artificial diet for their complete development. In addition to traditional morphological description and characterization of the immatures, the usefulness of the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) to identify the two species mentioned above was also assessed in this study / Doutorado / Parasitologia / Doutor em Parasitologia

Children in the Neolithic : from funerary context to socio-cultural interpretation in France from 5700 to 2100 BC.

Le Roy, Mélie 17 March 2015 (has links)
In France, during the Neolithic time period (5700-2100 BC), several cultural groups have been identified. They are mostly defined according to their set of artefacts. Funerary practices show major changes during this period. In the begining of Neolithic burials were simple and gathered, following with monumentalisation and collectivization at the middle Neolithic, before becoming exclusive at the end of the Neolithic. The aim of this research is to focus on immature individuals within these various contexts (funerary practices, age distribution and spatial analysis) and to discuss the social statut of young individuals within the society through the collected data.A multi-scalar study, based on an inventory of 8124 settlements in France combines biological and archaeological data and includes a GIS analysis. This elaborated data base is designed to become an online collaborative platform.Special attention is given to eight funerary sites dated respectively to middle Neolithic and to the end of Neolithic before their integration in the whole sample. Results document a specific spatial distribution of the immature individuals inside the funerary sites. Various funerary treatments are also identified on a larger scale, allowing the grouping of some sites both geographically and spatially. These differences seem to reflect breaking age at death linked to the social consideration of the immature deceased, from birth to adulthood.

Ovlivní zvýšení tělesné teploty v průběhu epileptického statu u mláďat laboratorního potkana rozsah či charakter poškození hipokampu? / Will an increase in body temperature during status epilepticus in rat pups affect the extent and nature of damage to the hippocampus?

Chott, Robert January 2012 (has links)
Febrile seizures are epileptic seizures, arising in connection with febrile conditions in children of prechool age. In adults with epilepsy is often present a history of febrile status epilepticus, seizure whose duration is longer than 20 minutes. To study the role of febrile status epilepticus (FSE) in the development of epilepsy and neuronal damage, it is necessary to have a relevant animal models. This work is focused on the morphological analysis of the new created model of febrile status epilepticus, using a combination of short-term hyperthermia and chemical induced status epilepticus at 10 days old rats. In adulthood, the animals were examined by video/EEG monitoring, and then morphometric analysis. The aim of this study was to determine the importance of short-term hyperthermia during SE for neuropathological changes using stereological measurements of hippocampal volume.

This diploma thesis deals with the attitudes of neonatologists and nurses to the ethical aspects of the treatment of extremely immature infants. The aim was to capture and interpret the attitudes of health professionals to the ethical issues of intensive neonatal care and their role in the decision-making process. The data were gathered through qualitative methodology using semi-structured and informal interviews with five neonatologists and five nurses. Data analysis was performed using open coding and data categorization. The results of the research are presented in individual categorical units by interpreting and retelling the received information. In conclusion, the attitudes of health professionals to selected ethical problems and the roles of individual members of the multidisciplinary team in decision-making about treatment procedures are discussed separately. The evaluation of results leads to the formulated recommendations for practice, which include several proposed solutions to the interpersonal problems associated with ethical issues of care for immature infants. Key words: immature infant, medical ethics, ethical decision making, perinatology, nursing, qualitative approach, interviews

Effect of low concentrations of antibiotic intracanal medicaments on crown discoloration and push-out bond strength

Yaghmoor, Rayan Bahjat M. 12 July 2018 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Introduction: Some intracanal medicaments used in regenerative endodontics may compromise the bond strength of root cements and lead to tooth discoloration. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of 1) low concentrations of TAP and DAP (1 mg/mL) on push-out bond strength of various root cements, and 2) low concentrations of TAP and DAP (1 mg/mL and 10 mg/mL) on crown discoloration. Materials and Methods: Single rooted human teeth (n = 144) were horizontally decoronated and instrumented according to standardized protocol. The samples were randomized into six experimental groups (Ca(OH)2, 1000 mg/mL TAP and DAP, 1 mg/mL TAP and DAP, and no medicament control group. After four weeks, the medicaments were removed and each group was divided into three subgroups to receive MTA cement, Biodentine cement, or Endosequence Bioceramic putty cement for two weeks. Then, two root cylinders were obtained from each root and push-out bond strength testing was performed. For the crown discoloration experiment, 160 crowns were obtained from intact human molars and randomized into experimental groups as described earlier with the addition of two groups (10 mg/mL TAP and DAP). The pulp chambers in half of the samples from each group were coated with an adhesive bonding agent before receiving the assigned intracanal medicament. Color changes (ΔE) were detected by spectrophotometer at 1 day, 1 week, and 4 weeks after application, as well as after thermocycling. Results: In the push-out bond strength experiment, 1 mg/mL DAP generally demonstrated significantly higher bond strength of root cements compared with the other treatment groups. For the crown discoloration experiment, when an adhesive bonding agent was used prior to (10 mg/mL or 1000 mg/mL) TAP, the crowns had significantly less discoloration than those without adhesive. DAP 10 mg/mL had the least significant color change at all time points regardless of whether adhesive was used. Conclusion: 1) 1 mg/mL DAP and Ca(OH)2 did not have significant negative effect on the bond strength of calcium-silicate-based cement to radicular dentin. 2) 1 mg/mL and 10 mg/mL of DAP and Ca(OH)2 had significantly less effect on the color change of the human tooth crown than all intracanal medicaments used in this study. / 2020-08-13

Metacognitive strategies for learning disabled adolescents in specialised education

Masureik-Berger, Arlene Roslyn 1 January 1994 (has links)
Learning disabilities are a life-long problem for many individuals. Besides the adjustments all adolescents experience in life, learning disabled adolescents must contend with academic problems at school which have a drastic effect on their selfesteem. This becomes particularly evident when these pupils face the demands of the secondary school syllabus where they have to be able to concentrate, read for information, memorise facts, answer questions and solve problems, and write assignments. By the time learning disabled adolescents reach secondary school they have already experienced so much failure that they become passive towards their studies. Teaching these pupils metacognitive learning strategies covering these skills helps them to become more independent learners. Through executive training procedures they are assisted to become more involved in their studies, the promotion of better self-regulation and self-monitoring is fostered, and as their scores improve, so does their motivation and selfconcept / Educational Studies / M.Ed. Immunité innée, balance th1/th17 et précurseurs musculaires dans les myopathies inflammatoires / Innate immune system, Th1/Th17 balance and immature myoblast precursors in inflammatory myopathies

Tournadre, Anne 19 November 2010 (has links)
This thesis, devoted to the inflammatory myopathies, is demonstrating the potential role in autoimmune disorders of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), gateway between innate and adaptive immune system, and more specifically in muscular diseases the fundamental role of muscle cell it-self. After the presentation of the general clinical features and the immunopathology of inflammatory myopathies, the adaptive immune response is the subject of the second part, demonstrating the abnormal accumulation of mature dendritic cells in myositis muscle, and the presence of Th1 and Th17 cells with a predominant Th1 profile. Innate immune system is next investigated, demonstrating the overexpression of TLR3 and 7 and of C-type lectin receptors characteristic of inflammatory myopathies. In vitro, stimulation of the TLR3 pathway in human myoblasts induces the production of IL6 and of the βchemokine CCL20, which in turn participate to the differentiation and the migration of T cells and dendritic cells, and of IFNβ which contributes to HLA class I up-regulation. The expression of TLR3 is differentially regulated by Th1 and Th17 cytokines. Finally, this work strongly implicates immature myoblast precursors in the pathogenesis of inflammatory myopathies. In contrast to normal muscle tissue, myositis tissue is characterized by the overexpression of HLA class I antigens, TLR3 and TLR7, myositis autoantigens, and IFNβ, all observed in immature myoblast precursors. By focusing damage onto those cells accomplishing repair, a feedforward loop of tissue damage is induced and could explain the defective repair in muscle in addition to the autoimmune attack.

Estudo da resposta de mosquitos (Diptera:Culicidae) a diferentes tipos de criadouros e condições de fatores físico-químicos da água / Study of mosquito response (Diptera: Culicidae) to different breeding types and conditions of physical and chemical factors of water

Camargo, Amanda Alves 30 May 2018 (has links)
The Culicidae family is diverse and has many species of high epidemiological relevance that transmit the pathogens that cause diseases such as dengue fever, yellow fever and malaria. The immatures are created exclusively in the water and in the most diverse types of breeding places, being able to be influenced by biological factors and physicochemical factors, that include pH, salinity, conductivity, total solids dissolved, among others. Understanding variations in breeding conditions is important in understanding and clarifying how these factors affect the development of immatures, their physiology, and interspecific relationships that influence larval development and mosquito survival. Therefore, the main objective of this work was to investigate the influence of physical-chemical factors and breeding type on the occurrence of Culicidae species in two remnants of Atlantic Forest in the city of São Paulo. Immature collections occurred at three different points in the Cantareira State Park and four different points in the Capivari-Monos Environmental Protection Area, remnants of the Mata Atlântica, located in Greater São Paulo, during twenty-seven months for collections of general diversity and twelve months for collections of diversity along with physical chemical factors of water. The immatures were collected in epiphytic and soil bromeliads, bamboos, pools of water in the soil and stones, tree hollows, lakes and artificial containers. Data analysis was done by calculating the coefficient of variation of the variables for breeding types, Restricted Proximity Analysis (CAP), Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) and boxplots without outliers. The results indicated that there is a statistically significant difference in species composition as a function of the diverse types of breeding sites and that pH has an influence on the occurrence of species, both for the type of breeder variable and for situations in which this variable is removed. The species with epidemiological importance were: Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, Anopheles cruzii, Haemagogus leucocelaenus, Psorophora ferox and Sabethes purpureus, with occurrence of both Aedes and Haemagogus species in the same breeding ground. These results are important to reinforce the need to monitor breeding sites of pathogen vector species and to better understand species ecology.
