- Caractérisation et optimisation -Petrescu, Tudor 24 March 2006 (has links) (PDF)

Sobre a estabilidade de cantoneiras de aço formadas a frio submetidas à compressão / On the stability of cold-formed steel angles under compressionMaia, Wanderson Fernando 10 April 2008 (has links)
Apparently, the structural analysis of a simple angle under compression is an elementary problem, therefore, already largely known. However, cold-formed steel angles, mostly with slender legs, present two critical buckling modes: (i) global-flexural mode, in cases of high length members, (ii) and a coincident local-plate/global-torsional-flexural mode, which is critical for short length members. Although simplified design procedures exist, recommended by specifications, the consideration of the torsional-flexural mode is controversial among researchers. A few recent papers indicate that considering the torsional-flexural mode is conservative, while other papers point to the necessity of this approach. This work investigates the structural response of simple and lipped angles under concentrically and eccentrically compression, by means of tests and nonlinear finite element analysis, being evaluated the effect of initial geometric imperfections; also evaluating the results from design procedures: (i) the classic effective width method and (ii) the direct strength method (DSM), where the angles are not pre-qualified shapes. The results of the experimental and nonlinear numerical analysis with initial imperfections indicate the necessity of considering the torsional-flexural mode.

unveil the essence of the totalitarian Power. It is based on the observations of three
important authors: Claude Lefort, who points out that the roots of the totalitarianism
are in the ambiguities and imperfections of the democracy itself, with the concept of
democratic indetermination. Aléxis de Tocqueville, with the tyranny of the majority,

Análise teórica e experimental de perfis de aço formados a frio submetidos à compressão / Theoretical and experimental analysis of cold-formed steel members under compressionChodraui, Gustavo Monteiro de Barros 09 August 2006 (has links)
Besides, thin-walled open sections have small torsional stiffness, and hence global torsional and flexural-torsional instability modes are many times more critical than global flexural ones. Also, distortional mode can happen in sections with lips (edge stiffener). Concerning on global buckling for members under compression, curves used in cold-formed steel design are based on hot-rolled and welded members. For example, the SSRC (Structural Stability Research Council) buckling curve, adopted by NAS (North American Specification), and Eurocode buckling curves, adopted by brazilian codes. Although some papers indicate these curves are acceptable for cold-formed steel members, others claim for a deeper analysis on their unique structural behavior, specially on residual stress, geometric imperfections and coupled buckling modes. It is presented in this thesis an experimental analysis of sections usually used in Brazil (simple and lipped channels, and also single and built-up angles). Moreover, it is developed a strategy for numerical non-linear analysis, considering the effects of global and local (also distortional) geometric imperfections and residual stress as well, in order to obtain a trustable theoretical value for the axial member stength. Results show the viability of the current buckling curves for cold-formed steel members. Finally, direct strength method (DSM) was analysed for all studied members, showing good results. Special attention to angles elastic stability, focusing on the coincidence between local-plate and global-torsional mode, which still causes confusion in design methods. Also, due to the fact angles are not pre- qualified sections for using DSM, many options on its application were studied, where it was concluded that negleting torsion in global analysis leeds to unconservative results

Performance evaluation of RC flexural elements strengthened by advanced compositesAndreou, Eftychia January 2002 (has links)
The flexural performance of composite systems made of reinforced concrete, Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) and adhesives was studied during the current research. The experimental investigation was principally concentrated on the potential use of Kevlar® 49 (aramid fibre) for RC beam strengthening. The main aims of research have been; (a) to investigate the relative merits of using Aramids in comparison to other FRPs, (b) strength optimisation of systems to prevent excessive losses of ductility, (c) to examine the failure mode and crack patterns, together with salient strength factors at ultimate limit state and (d) to carry out analytical modelling using a commercial FE package. The experimental investigation comprised of testing 55 simply supported RC beams of either 1.5m or 2.6m length. In addition to the parametric studies included in points (a)-(d) above (to assess the section characteristics), further experimentation was conducted to investigate the beam performance by varying the factors of; (e) beam shear span, (f) FRP anchorage length, (g) concrete surface preparation, (h) FRP end-anchoring, (i) beam precracking, (j) introduction of air-voids within the bond line of FRP/concrete, (k) influence of cyclic loading and, (1) exposure to aggressive environment. The results from current tests confirm elements of reports from other researchers (by thorough review of literature) that all FRPs have great potential for flexural strengthening of RC members. This is valid even in cases where additional environmental degradation and/or cracking (due to serviceability loads), had taken place. Aramid fibres were found to result in favourable outcomes concerning both strength and ductility enhancements. It was determined, both from experiments and non-linear modelling, that the amount of FRP fibre content is an important factor in every strengthening application. Experimentation showed that depending on the existing condition of the structure (concrete strength, internal reinforcement ratio, section dimensions, degradation level and load configuration), there seems to be a unique level of optimum fibre content. The FRP levels in excess of the optimum were seen to lead to premature brittle tearing-off failure modes. It was also found that to prevent premature beam failure (due to incompatibility of stress at concrete and FRP interface), a maximum possible anchorage length should be considered in order to deliver an optimum section performance. The results from the analytical modelling indicated a most satisfactory agreement with the experimental data after the initial mechanical properties were calibrated. It was found that actual representation of material properties (e.g. steel constitutive law) are of great significance, for an accurate modelling of RC element loaded behaviour. The bond developed between the FRP and concrete is one of the key parameters for achieving good performance of the systems. It was determined that concrete surface preparation and priming is beneficial, while the introduction of air-voids due to poor workmanship can reduce the section load bearing capabilities. Cyclic loading on FRP strengthened sections was found to curtail the full rotational capacity utilisation of the beam. However, even the above mentioned curtailed behaviour was more advantageous than cyclically loaded beam performance without FRP strengthening.

Previous issue date: 2003-06-11T00:00:00Z / The fixed investments decisions of firms operating in capital markets facing imperfections are sensitive to the availability of internal funds (investment-cashflow sensitivity), rather than just depending on the availability of projects with positive net present values. This occurs since, in these environments, the cost of external capital exceeds that of internal funds (this cost difference is called financial constraints). This study describes the main concepts, the intuition of some models and shows the current debate regarding the topic – the studies diverge regarding the influence of financial constraints in the investment-cashflow sensitivity. The relationship of financial constraints and investment-cashflow sensitivity is examined empirically with Brazilian firm-level data for the period 1992 to 2001 using CLEARY’s methodology. A new measure of total investments is proposed. The main result obtained with this sample, and considering the total investment model, is that investment decisions of firms with less financial constraints are sensitive to the availability of internal funds, but firms with higher financial constraints are not. This may be explained by the fact that these firms face financial distress problems and are in a situation where only the absolutely essential investments are taken.
