Orientador: Lúcia Granja / Banca: Rodrigo Camargo de Godoi / Banca: Pablo Simpson Kilzer Amorim / Resumo: A partir da consulta e levantamento completo dos dados relativos à tipografia do Jornal do Commercio, realizados junto aos acervos da Biblioteca Nacional, do Rio de Janeiro, da Biblioteca Mário de Andrade e da Biblioteca Brasiliana Guita e José Mindlin, de São Paulo, e das Bibliotecas da USP, por meio do portal do Sistema Integrado de Bibliotecas da Universidade de São Paulo (SIBiUSP), apresentamos nesta dissertação um inédito conjunto completo, pelo menos por meio dos recursos mobilizados até então, das obras literárias e não-literárias, bem como os outros periódicos, que saíram à público pela tipografia do Jornal do Commercio do Rio de Janeiro entre 1827 e 1865, produção levada a efeito nas horas vagas de que essa tipografia dispunha, nos intervalos de impressão de seu principal produto. Como resultado, encontramos durante o levantamento realizado uma grande variedade de títulos e tipologia de impressos, os quais apontam para uma atividade editorial intensa e diversificada. No que se refere à publicação de obras literárias, saíram à luz textos teatrais e poéticos, porém destacou-se a impressão de romances, concentrada ao final da década de 1830 e durante a década seguinte, impulsionada pelo desenvolvimento do folhetim nos jornais brasileiros e pelo hábito de reimpressão dos romances-folhetim pelas tipografias do período, após sua publicação pelo jornal. Nesta dissertação, apresentamos essa atividade editorial, destacando o papel privilegiado das oficinas dos jornais do XIX... / Abstract: From the consultation and the complete data collection on the typography of Jornal do Commercio, carried out by means of the collections of Biblioteca Nacional (National Library), Rio de Janeiro, Biblioteca Mário de Andrade (Mário de Andrade Library), Biblioteca Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin (Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin Library), São Paulo, and USP Libraries, through the portal of the Integrated System of Libraries of the University of São Paulo (SIBiUSP), we present an unprecedented complete set, at least through the resources mobilized until then, of literary and non-literary works, as well as other periodicals published by the newspaper Jornal do Commercio of Rio de Janeiro between 1827 and 1865, produced during the spare time of this typography, in the printing intervals of its main product. As a result, we found during the data collection a large variety of titles and typology of printed matter, which indicate an intense and diversified publishing activity. As for the publication of literary works, theatrical and poetic texts came to light, but the impression of novels was emphasized, especially at the end of the 1830s and during the following decade, driven by the development of feuilletons in Brazilian newspapers and by the habit of reprinting Roman feuilleton by the typographies of the period, after its publication by the newspaper. The search for improvements in printing images involved the own equipment, the form of fixation of the types to compose the matrix, the innovations in the distribution of the ink, new fittings between the matrix and the inking system, the mechanization of the printing press by the force of the vapor, and also alterations in the preparation of appropriate impression inks to that group of changes. Thus, in this work, we analyze recipes to make inks and their relationships with the processes and the changes involved in this art, starting the analysis of a manual of impression inks published in the first half of the century XIX - On the Preparation of Printing Ink: both Black and Coloured (1832), written by William Savage (1771-1844). We will approach the subject of the ink starting from the context in that the manual was published, evidencing practices of production on printing inks and the old knowledge registered in text. A group of factors will be presented to promote a better understanding of the influence of the ink in the impression process and your interface with the equipment, with the matrix and your distribution system of the printing press, trying to interpret in the work the secrets of the ingredients used in the revenues of an ink and mainly the way that the author treats on that subject / Entre o final do século XVIII e a primeira metade do século XIX, muitas modificações estavam em processo em relação às artes gráficas. As buscas por melhorias nos sistemas que geravam imagens a partir de uma impressora envolviam o próprio equipamento, as matrizes usadas no sistema de impressão, a forma de fixação dos tipos para compor a matriz, as inovações na distribuição da tinta, novos ajustes entre a matriz e o sistema de entintamento, a mecanização da impressora pelo uso da movimentação baseada na força do vapor, e também alterações no preparo de tintas de impressão adequadas a esse conjunto de mudanças. Assim, neste trabalho, analisaremos receitas de tintas e a sua relação com os processos e as mudanças envolvidas na época, tendo como ponto de partida a análise de um manual de tintas de impressão publicado na primeira metade do século XIX On the Preparation of Printing Ink: both Black and Coloured (1832), escrito por William Savage (1771-1844). Abordaremos a questão da tinta a partir do contexto em que o manual foi publicado, evidenciando as práticas de produção de tintas de impressão e os conhecimentos antigos registrados em texto. Um conjunto de fatores será apresentado para promover um melhor entendimento da influência da tinta no processo de impressão e a sua interface com o equipamento, com a matriz e o seu sistema de distribuição pela impressora, procurando interpretar na obra os segredos dos ingredientes usados nas receitas de uma tinta e principalmente a maneira que o autor trata sobre esse assunto

In this work these three paths are tracked to the study of images in the textbooks of physics, printed during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This work begins by presenting a study considering the printing process and how images were organized and diagrammed on the pages of books. It also analyses some modifications in the relations between images and scientific views of that period. Finally, it present how the use of some graphic signs, can contribute to the dissemination of knowledge throught accumulation of information. Thus we seek to demonstrate that the analysis of available technical resources, the vision of science in a given period as well as the visual language used can provide various information to study images in History of Science / Os caminhos para os estudos das imagens no campo da História da Ciência abordam aspectos de registro de informação, divulgação do conhecimento e suas relações com os meios gráficos de impressão. Neste trabalho esses três caminhos são trilhados para o estudo de imagens constantes dos livros didáticos de física, impressos durante o século XIX e o início do XX. Iniciaremos este trabalho apresentando um estudo relacionado às técnicas de impressão e o modo como foram organizadas e diagramadas as imagens nas páginas dos livros. Também apresentaremos como algumas modificações sofridas pelas imagens estavam relacionadas com o pensamento científico daquele período. Por fim, buscaremos analisar como a utilização de alguns signos gráficos, resultante do acúmulo de informações, pode contribuir na divulgação do conhecimento. Desta forma buscamos demonstrar que a análise dos recursos técnicos disponíveis, da visão de ciência em um determinado período e da linguagem visual utilizada pode oferecer diversas informações para os estudos das imagens pela História da Ciência
