in the Department of Didactics at the University of Zululand, 1997. / The aims of this study were :
• to investigate the effects of teacher absenteeism on secondary school pupils in KwaZulu Natal.
• to suggest in the light of the findings obtained didactically justifiable guidelines for reducing the absenteeism rate among secondary school teachers.
To address these problems information was collected from school principals through interviews and questionnaires. Analytical methods were also used to collect information regarding the effects of teacher absenteeism on secondary school pupils. In order to curb the problem of disjunction caused by an overemphasis on empirical research, this study also concentrated on a literature review in which recent sources on classroom management were used to identify criteria for effective classroom management, with specific reference to disruptive behaviour caused by the absence of teachers in the classroom. The study identified the following didactic criteria: democracy, conflict resolution, effective learning environment, motivation and order. These theoretical findings were blended with the empirical findings to analyse the effects of teacher absenteeism on the quality of teaching-learning actions in the schools included in the sample.
The findings revealed that teacher absenteeism had the following major effects:
• ignorance of pupils' names and achievements
• demotivation among pupils
• fighting and other forms of violence such as intimidation, defiance and vandalism
• truancy
• incomplete work programmes and poor performance
• drunkenness and other forms of substance abuse by pupils
• failure to do homework and assignments an increase in the drop-out rate
• cheating in the examination
The recommendations flowing from the research included, inter alia, that the Department of Education should establish a clear code of conduct regarding teacher absenteeism and a definite procedure to ensure that principals as well as teachers honour this code of conduct. Measures should be introduced to (a) combat the problem of teachers who fake sickness to absent themselves from duty and (b) compel principals to be more strict in keeping attendance registers, not only for pupils, but also for teachers. Since three of the most common causes of teacher absenteeism appear to be the attendance of funerals, part-time studies and long distances teachers travel between homes and schools, the dissertation contains several recommendations to alleviate problems in these areas.

Twin nucleation, twin propagation, twin-slip interactions, pseudo-elasticity, strain-rate sensitivity and non-Schmid's effects of {10¯1 2} twinning in magnesium via in-situ EBSDKapil, Janit 30 April 2011 (has links)
In-situ EBSD on profuse {10ˉ12} twinning in magnesium revealed that the twinning stress for nucleation is not totally rate-insensitive but highly dependent on grain boundary misorientation ranging between 10° and 15°. A new regime in the theta-strain curve; Regime-D, before Regime II, was identified for axisymmetric textures and corresponded to mitigation of twin propagation which was markedly rate-sensitive, such when the strain-rate fell below 10-5/s, twin propagation, but not twin nucleation, was completely halted and this fact substantiates the predominant effect of transmutation on Regime II hardening over that of Hall and Petch by twin segmentation. This technique revealed that twin nucleation dominates twin growth rate over twin propagation in grains undergoing multi-variant twinning under high-Schmid factors. Pseudo-elasticity in Mg was revealed to originate from an unusual detwinning phenomenon of residual twins. This effect was attributed to incomplete accommodation slip necessary for the shape change by twin to take place.

The East Vaal area of the South African Post Office is faced with a high rate of teller absenteeism, which has been observed to be as high as 15 per cent. This adds to the cost of providing quality service to the company’s customers. The objectives of this study are to determine the factors that lead to the high rate of absenteeism in the East Vaal area and to make recommendations to the area management that could improve the attendance behaviour of the tellers in the area.
To achieve these objectives, 51 questionnaires were prepared and handed out to the tellers with absenteeism rates of more than three percent in the East Vaal area to be completed. Face-to-face interviews with both the tellers and their branch managers were conducted. Absenteeism records and Employee Assistance Programme reports were also studied to collect more data.
The findings highlighted lack of rewards for employees who reported for work regularly; employee illness; no recognition for good work performance; tellers receiving insufficient remuneration for their work; poor working conditions; and poor management style as the main reasons for the tellers taking unscheduled leave of absence.
Based on the key findings, the main recommendations were that appropriate mechanisms for acknowledging and rewarding good work performance and attendance behaviour should be in place; a sick-leave pool system accessible to tellers should be introduced; establishment of performance evaluation and rewards for tellers; and introducing management practices which lead to a more open expression of opinion and participatory problem-solving / Business Management / Thesis (M.Tech. affect the workmen absenteeism in a transforming area in the Amazonas industry, such as we
Thermal Transfer Ribbon (TTR) . Absenteeism is an event related to the employee's absence
from their work activities, causing negative impacts on the productivity and profitability of
organizations. It is very important to analyze diseases which most isolate workmen from their
working post, for it gives us a very clear idea of such absenses and so, can help the organization
to take actions to reduce such occurrences. For this purpose it as carried out a field research
to collect informations through from 187 medical certificates which were given to the
workmen for 12 months period and registered by a report on Microsoft Office Excel basis.
Afterwards, it were checked out all the collected data, in order to identify the main turning
away reasons from the jobs, diseases which showed casual connections with the work, or rather
epidemiologically related to the National Classified Economic Activity (CNAE) from the
surveyed industry, according to the Technical Epidemiologic Nexus of Social Security
(NTEP) and Accidentary Prevention Factor (FAP) and finally calculated the indexes of frequency
of sick leave rates and returning people, average duration of absences and finally, all
expenses spent during those absent days. The results showed the diseases that most caused
absences were uterine leiomyomas (23.38%), convalescence after surgery (18.41%), impingement
syndrome (16.92%), varicose veins without ulcer or inflammation (7.96%), pain in
the thoracic spine with physiotherapy treatment and vascular headache with the same percentage
of incidence (7.46%), right / left syndrome (6.47%), low back pain and conjunctivitis also
with the same percentage (4.48%) and wrist and hand injury caused by work accident
(2.99%). The results confirmed that the absenteeism disease are episodes that occurrences
frequently in the studied industry, impact on its productivity and may, according to the methodology
of the NTEP increase the FAP and consequently the rates for payment of Social Security. / Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo analisar os episódios de absenteísmo causados por doenças
em geral e também às decorrentes ou agravadas por exposições laborais em trabalhadores de
uma indústria de transformação no Amazonas de produção de fitas para impressão por transferência
térmica conhecida como Thermal Transfer Ribbon (TTR). O absenteísmo é um evento
relacionado à ausência do trabalhador das suas atividades laborais, que gera impactos negativos
para a produtividade e a lucratividade das organizações. Analisar as doenças que mais
afastam os trabalhadores de seus postos de trabalho torna-se importante porque proporciona
uma visão mais clara acerca das causas dessas ausências e pode auxiliar as organizações a
adotarem ações que permitam a redução desses eventos. Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa
de campo, para coletar informações de 187 atestados médicos entregues pelos trabalhadores
em um período de dozes meses e registradas em uma planilha construída na ferramenta
Microsoft Office Excel. Posteriormente, foram analisadas as informações coletadas para identificar
as principais causas de afastamentos, as doenças que apresentaram nexo causal com o
trabalho, ou seja epidemiologicamente relacionadas com o código de Classificação Nacional
de Atividade Econômica (CNAE) da indústria pesquisada, de acordo com o Nexo Técnico
Epidemiológico Previdenciário (NTEP) e o Fator Acidentário de Prevenção (FAP) e por fim
calculados os índices de frequência de licença médica e reincidência de pessoas, duração média
das ausências. Os resultados demonstraram que as doenças que mais causaram afastamentos
foram atribuídas aos leiomiomas do útero (23,38%), convalescência após cirurgia
(18,41%), síndrome de colisão do ombro (16,92%), varizes dos membros inferiores sem úlcera
ou inflamação (7,96%), dor na coluna torácica com acompanhamento fisioterápico e cefaleia
vascular com o mesmo percentual de incidências (7,46%), síndrome do impacto direito/
esquerdo (6,47%), dor lombar baixa e conjuntivite também com os mesmos percentuais
(4,48%) e ferimento do punho e da mão causado por acidente de trabalho (2,99%). Os resultados
apresentados confirmam que o absenteísmo por licença médica são episódios que ocorrem
com frequência na indústria estudada, impactam em sua produtividade e podem, segundo
a metodologia do NTEP aumentar o FAP e consequentemente as alíquotas para pagamento da
Previdência Social.

The Patterns and Possible Costs of Teacher Absenteeism: Are Teacher Absences an Indicator of Student Achievement?Womack, Janet Leigh 13 January 2014 (has links)
Since the inception of No Child Left Behind, particularly in the past few years, teacher accountability is at the forefront of educational debate. Taking in to account the many facets of teacher accountability, student performance is nearly half of teacher evaluation systems. Considering the value of a quality teacher, one would logically presume that the teacher was present in the classroom to ensure student achievement. However, teacher absenteeism is an overlooked issue in today’s accountability system. The relative dearth of evidence and a practitioner’s lens of logical reason prompted an interest to investigate the relationship further. The historical perspective in the literature that does exist related to teacher absenteeism revealed that teacher absences are expensive and negatively affects student achievement.
The purpose of the quantitative study was to determine if patterns exist among teacher absences and to determine the relationship between teacher absences and student achievement performance on state standardized tests in English, math, science, and social studies. A quantitative research design was employed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and sequential multiple regression as the primary analytical procedures. Using data from a single school division in Virginia, analyses were conducted to determine if there were patterns among teachers’ absences, if teacher absences predicted student achievement, and if teacher absences influenced certain student groups more than others. Although some evidence in the research literature indicates that student achievement decreased with increased teacher absenteeism, the current investigation did not reveal consequential evidence that teacher absenteeism negatively impacts student achievement. Implications from the findings, along with recommendations for future research, are presented in the final chapter. / Ed. D.

The complexity of absenteeism and turnover intention: Direct, mediation and moderation effectsVogelzang, Ciska (Francisca Monica) January 2008 (has links)
Absenteeism and turnover in the workplace are complex phenomena that have implications for organisations and individuals alike. This study investigated the relationships of attitudinal factors with absenteeism and turnover intentions at a large healthcare organisation in the Bay of Plenty. A questionnaire completed by 407 employees had several measures such as job involvement, job satisfaction, organisational commitment (affective and continuance commitment), perceived organisational support, perceived supervisor support, work-to-family conflict, family-to-work conflict, team cohesion, regional identification and turnover intention. Absenteeism data were collected from personnel records. The results indicated a probable association of job satisfaction, work-to-family conflict and perceived supervisor support with absenteeism, while turnover intention was associated with all predictors except continuance commitment. Perceived organisational support partially mediated the relationship between perceived supervisor support and turnover intention. No moderator effects were found for job involvement, perceived supervisor support and team cohesion on relationships between work-to-family conflict and affective commitment/job satisfaction and perceived organisational support and affective commitment respectively, however strong main effects were shown for job involvement and team cohesion. The main finding is that organisations must understand how organisational and supervisor support increases job satisfaction and affective commitment and decreases work-to-family conflict, which lowers absenteeism and turnover intention. The detection of high levels of regional identification indicate the need to acknowledge this construct, particularly in relation to turnover intention.

Understanding absenteeism in construction: a pilot study on industrial construction in AlbertaSalehi Sichani, Mahdi 06 1900 (has links)
Absenteeism is a factor that adversely influences construction productivity. Construction employers in Alberta have been trying to address high levels of absenteeism on their projects but they have not been successful so far. This study aims at a better understanding of absenteeism on construction projects for its possible mitigation in the future.
A hierarchy of causes of absence and factors affecting it in construction projects were identified. A survey and an Absenteeism Tracking Tool designed to capture the causes of absence were piloted on an industrial multi-contractor project in Alberta. Different survey administration methods were tested to successfully administer the survey.
The study identified top ten causes of absence on the pilot project. Using statistical analyses (e.g., correlation with dummy variables), the study found that specific groups may have different absence cultures and attitudes toward absenteeism. Such findings can be used to improve the absence culture among the designated workforce. / Construction Engineering and Management
