The evaluation of a pedagogical-program development environment for Novice programmers : a comparative study

It is an acknowledged fact that many novice programmers experience difficulty in the process of learning to program. One of the contributing factors to this difficulty is the Program Development Environment (PDE). Professional-PDEs are those developed specifically for professional programmers, but are often used by educational institutions in the instruction of programming. It has long been accepted that such environments are inappropriate in the instruction of programming due to unnecessary complexity and lack of support for novice programmers in the learning process. Numerous pedagogical-PDEs supporting the mechanics of programming have been developed in response to this. A review of literature, however, indicates that very limited empirical studies comparing pedagogical-PDEs and professional-PDEs have been conducted. The current study investigates whether there are measurable benefits to using a pedagogical-PDE supporting the mechanics of programming in the instruction of programming instead of a professional-PDE. A comparative study of this nature requires a representative pedagogical-PDE and representative professional-PDE be compared with one another. The first part of the current study determines a set of requirements that a pedagogical- PDE should adhere to based on literature. A set of representative features for a pedagogical-PDE is derived by examining the features of existing PDEs in conjunction with the set of requirements. Based on these features, a pedagogical-PDE, known as SimplifIDE, is developed that implements the representative set of features and that meets are the requirements for a pedagogical-PDE. The second part of the current study is the specification and administration of an empirical experiment in which SimplifIDE and Borland© DelphiTM are compared with one another. A holistic approach in determining the differences between the PDEs is taken and three main areas are examined, namely academic performance, perceptions and programming behavior.

A framework for a successful collaboration culture in software development and operations (DevOps) environments

Traditional software development methodologies are historically used for the creation of software products in separate departments, namely development and operations departments. The development department typically codes and tests the software, whilst the operations department is responsible for its deployment. This siloed arrangement is not aligned to modern practices, which require a timeous response to changes without necessarily delaying the product release. DevOps culture addresses this silos problem by creating an enabling environment for the two departments to collaborate throughout the software development life cycle. The successful implementation of the DevOps culture should give an organisation a competitive advantage over its rivals by responding to changes much faster than when traditional methodologies are employed. However, there is no coherent framework on how organisations should implement DevOps culture. Hence, this study was aimed at developing a framework for the implementation of DevOps culture by identifying important factors that should be included in the framework. The literature survey revealed that open communication, roles and responsibility alignment, respect and trust are the main factors that constitute DevOps collaboration culture. The proposed framework was underpinned by the Information System Development Model which suggests that the acceptance of a new technology by software developers is influenced by social norm, organisational usefulness and perceived behavioural control. A sequential mixed method was used to survey and interview respondents from South Africa, which were selected using convenience and purposive sampling. Statistical analysis of the quantitative data acquired through the questionnaire followed by a qualitative analysis of interviews were undertaken. The results showed that open communication, respect and trust are the key success factors to be included in the framework. The role and responsibility factor was found not to be statistically significant. This study contributes towards the understanding of factors necessary for the acceptance of DevOps culture in a software development organisation. DevOps managers can use the results of this study to successfully adopt and implement DevOps culture. This study also contributes to the theoretical literature on software development by identifying factors that are important in the acceptance of DevOps collaboration culture. / School of Computing / Ph. Tarptautiniai tyrimai rodo, jog moderniosios ugdymo priemonės gali pagerinti mokymą ir mokymąsi. Analitiniu būdu nustatyta, kad, mokant fizikos, mokomosios kompiuterinės priemonės (toliau MKP) naudojamos rečiausiai, nes daugelis programų yra užsienio kalba, jos nesuderintos su ugdymo programa ir nepritaikytos pamokoms, pernelyg sudėtingos. Atsižvelgiant į MKP analizės rezultatus, sukurta interkatyvi su bendrosiomis programomis ir išsilavinimo standartais suderinta mokomoji fizikos svetainę 8-ai klasei „Tiesiaeigis tolyginis judėjimas“. Projektuojant mokomąją svetainę, pirmenybė suteikta aktyviems ir mišriems interaktyvumo tipams bei labai aukštam, aukštam ir vidutiniam interaktyvumo lygiui. Išanalizavus tiesiaeigio tolyginio judėjimo teorinę ir praktinę dalį, parinkti mokomosios medžiagos pateikimo svetainėje būdai. Išanalizavus svetainių kūrimo priemones, parinkta Front Page 2003 programa. Svetainės interaktyvumas programuotas su Java Script kalba. Iš kelių animacijos kurimo priemonių parinkta 2D & 3D Animator programa. Su svetaine ir jos galimybėmis buvo supažindinti 8-os klasės moksleiviai. Moksleiviai teigiamai įvertino mokomąją svetainę. Svetainės mokomosios medžiagos dalys, kurių interaktyvumo lygis aukščiausias, gavo aukščiausius įvertinimus. Todėl interaktyvi mokomoji fizikos svetainė 8-ai klasei „Tiesiaeigis tolyginis judėjimas“ gali būti naudojama kaip mokymo ir mokymosi priemonė. / International researchers demonstrate that modern training aids may improve teaching and learning process. It is appointed in analytic way that interactive learning computer-aided software tools are used more rarely than in other subjects. There are some reasons for that: programess are too complicated, they are not adjusted to curriculum and most of them is in foreign language. Analysis of internet sites on physics subject indicates that they mostly are accessible easily and have suitable, comprehensible navigation, also they are quite well animated. Considering results of analysis it is decided to create an interactive internet site which is coordinated with common curriculum and with standarts of education and would be devoted for training physics subject in 8 classes. This internet site was named “Rectilineal gradual moving”. When this training internet site was being designed, preference was given to active and mixed active types as well as to very high, high and medium high level of interaction since active learning computer-aided software tools interaction type directly stimulates actions of students. When the part of theory of rectilineal gradual moving was analysed, ways of presentation training material were chosen. The site was designed with programme Front Page 2003. For creation of interaction there are explored two language in script writing: VBScript and Java Script.
