Incandescent light power efficiency: an impact study on the power consumption of the Vaal University of Technology's light sources

Adeniyi, A. O. 12 1900 (has links)
M. Tech. (Power Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology), Vaal University of Technology / In view of the energy consumption problems, an impact study, extensive laboratory tests and an investigation towards comparable energy saving light sources was carried out on the light sources identified in the survey conducted at the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), Vanderbijlpark campus. Three types of identified incandescent light sources were purchased and extensively tested in order to obtain viable statistical data on the life span, luminance delivered per unit, power consumption and economic effect, as well as identifying relevant energy efficient light sources for replacement purposes. A suitable computerised maintenance program has been developed to be introduced to the VUT that currently does not have a lighting system maintenance program. The case study was located within the empirical-analytical paradigm, using quantitative data. The identified aims and goals place the empirical part of the study in the category of implementation evaluation research that provides an overview of a maintenance plan.

Is LED use in traffic signals viable in the Texas Department of Transportation, Houston District?

Ughanze, Ugonna Uzodinma 05 November 2012 (has links)
Light Emitting Diode (LED) is used in traffic signals and highway illumination in the Texas Department of Transportation, Houston District (TxDOT). The thesis focuses on the cost of maintenance of the LED for signals on the highway system in the Houston District. This LED cost includes human and capital resources which are compared against the cost associated with the incandescent bulb used in traffic signals at a similar location in Houston. The analysis leads to actionable decisions to see if total migration of the LED is advisable or not, amidst budgetary constraints and the benefits thereof. / text

Formation et transport de poussières dans un plasma basse pression magnétisé / Formation and transport of dust in a low pressure magnetized plasma

Rojo, Mathias 09 November 2018 (has links)
Since the late 1980s, dusty plasmas have been the subject of a large number of studies. Several fields of plasma physics are confronted with the presence of these particles: astrophysics, deposition or etching processes, or controlled thermonuclear fusion plasmas. However, few dusty plasma studies have been reported in low pressure microwave discharges. Fifteen years ago, it was accepted that dust particles cannot be formed in the plasma volume, due to the low probability of recombining reactive species, because of the low density of the gas. At LAPLACE, incandescent dusts are observed in RECR acetylene plasma. The present study aims to provide some answers on the mechanisms related to the formation, transportation and heating of dust particles. This document presents the results obtained during these four years of theses. Chapter 1 briefly introduces the emergence of the topic of dusty plasmas, as well as some important theoretical aspects of multipolar discharges. Chapter 2 details the experimental setup and the different diagnostics used during this study: Langmuir probe, Mach probe, wall probe current and rapid imaging. Chapter 3 details the mechanisms for charging and heating dust. In this part, experimental measurements and a model are coupled to explain the incandescence and to estimate the particles charges. Chapter 4 describes the characterisation of dust transport in acetylene plasma by rapid imaging. In this chapter, we discuss the forces that can be responsible for this transport. Finally, Chapter 5 reviews the results obtained on the plasma-surface interaction, using ex-situ analyzes as well as measurements of wall probe currents.

Glödljus vs. LED-ljus : En rumslig analys av ljuskvalitén i hemmiljö / Incandescent light vs. LED light : A spatial analysis of lighting quality in home environments

Attila, Csikós January 2014 (has links)
There are still too many households in Sweden that use mostly incandescent light for lighting, using incandescent or halogen bulbs. This causes a substantial part of the unnecessary surplus of carbon-dioxide that is one of the reasons for global warming. Therefore, this degree project aims to promote a greener environment by studying and paying attention to factors that have an influence in the lighting context. The purpose of this degree project is to gain a better understanding of how the LED light is experienced in a home environment. The work will show how LED light source's current quality is evaluated based on individual room experiences, and if additional quality improvements are needed. The objective is to turn the public's attitude in a more positive direction where LED can contribute to a more ecologically sustainable environment. To investigate how LEDs are perceived in home environments an experimental study was performed which was based on the following research questions: How is LED light quality experienced compared to halogen light, how is personal wellbeing perceived in relationship to halogen and LED light, how are room experience and room character affected if halogen light is replaced by LED light in a home environment and are there any differences in these experiences between lighting designers and non lighting designers? Two identical test-rooms were used. They were identical in size, interior design and lighting design. Halogen bulbs were used in one room and LED lights were used in the other room. A survey was used to get answers to the questions above. The results have been analyzed and detailed room analysis was also made. The results showed that the light, regardless of light-source, influenced the participant's well-being and their room experience in different ways, depending on the occupational group they belonged to. It was also found that the difference in quality of light between halogen light and LED light is no longer significant. The presently available LED lights are improving and are worthy replacements for incandescent and halogen lamps.
