A comparative study between thermoplastic and conventional removable partial denture designs

Farao, Warren Emile January 2019 (has links)
Magister Scientiae Dentium - MSc(Dent) / Three dental laboratories in the Cape Town Metropole that were known to fabricate “flexible” or NMCDs for dental practices were identified and were invited to participate in the study. Their participation consisted of emailing photographs of completed metal-frame, acrylic and flexible RPDs and their casts prior to sending them to the practices for delivery to patients. Specimens were collected until a total of 20 metal-frame, 20 acrylic resin and 20 flexible RPDs were received. A design was drawn for each submitted RPD. For each RPD, an “ideal” design was drawn, using the image of the cast. This was done by two observers, who are experienced members of staff in the Department of Restorative Dentistry (Prosthetics), independently. The designs from both observers were later compared for similarity. Where differences existed in the designs, these were resolved by means of discussion until agreement was reached. Each ideal design served as the control for each clinical design. The number of rests, their configuration, the type of support, number of clasps, the presence of indirect retention, cross-arch stabilization, the number of teeth whose periodontal tissues were covered by design components for each design among the different denture type groups, and corresponding control designs were identified and reported. The ratios of teeth replaced/teeth covered per denture type groups and per classification, and corresponding control designs were compared.

Le discours indirect libre en russe / Free indirect speech in russian

Artyushkina, Olga 22 March 2010 (has links)
Free indirect speech (FID) in Russian is compared, on the one hand, with other forms of reported speech and, on the other hand, with the representation of reported thought in narration. The dissertation draws up a gradation of FID. FID can be represented by subordinate and non-subordinate forms that can be integrated in the narration. Different semantic and syntactic markers in Russian are studied and compared with the markers in French. An outline of subordinate FID shows the necessity of the concept of continuum in the system of reported speech. The enunciation-centered description of FID is proposed : it is necessary to test if the utterance representing the reported speech or thought can be verbalised. If so, the test of transposition into the direct speech is implemented in order to discover whether or not this reported speech would be actually pronounced in the way it is reported. In the section which deals with non-subordinated FID, the expressive markers are studied and compared with other forms called « FID-effect forms », which are often confused with FID. The main point of the dissertation is about showing that FID always contains a trace of the narrator which can be seen in the choice of a term in the utterance, or by the disposition of the FID-utterance in the structure of the text. This trace can also be designated by the utterance clauses and (or) by the connectors that can have an important function in the narrative strategy of the text.

Ameliorating the Overhead of Dynamic Optimization

Zhao, Qin, Wong, Weng Fai 01 1900 (has links)
Dynamic optimization has several key advantages. This includes the ability to work on binary code in the absence of sources and to perform optimization across module boundaries. However, it has a significant disadvantage viz-a-viz traditional static optimization: it has a significant runtime overhead. There can be performance gain only if the overhead can be amortized. In this paper, we will quantitatively analyze the runtime overhead introduced by a dynamic optimizer, DynamoRIO. We found that the major overhead does not come from the optimizer's operation. Instead, it comes from the extra code in the code cache added by DynamoRIO. After a detailed analysis, we will propose a method of trace construction that ameliorate the overhead introduced by the dynamic optimizer, thereby reducing the runtime overhead of DynamoRIO. We believe that the result of the study as well as the proposed solution is applicable to other scenarios such as dynamic code translation and managed execution that utilizes a framework similar to that of dynamic optimization. / Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA)

The Effects of Direct and Indirect Experiences with School Crime and Violence on High School Teacher Burnout

Buck, Chad Anthony 12 June 2006 (has links)
School violence is considered the most significant problem facing United States schools (Elam, Rose, & Gallup, 1999, 2003, 2004). Although school shootings receive the bulk of media attention, incidents such as physical assaults, property crimes, intimidation, and sexual harassment are much more common (National Center for Education Statistics, 2004). In addition, little is known about the experiences of teachers. The present study examines the relationship between various types of school violence and teacher burnout. The final sample consisted of 315 high school teachers who returned surveys that assessed knowledge of direct and indirect experiences with violent acts at school over the past 12 months. Respondents also completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory. A series of hierarchical multiple regression analyses was used to determine how much variance in three domains of professional burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal accomplishment) was accounted for by direct and indirect experiences with violence. Results suggest 1) that teachers experience and witness a broad range of violent acts (particularly sexual harassment) in their workplaces, and 2) that direct and indirect exposure to both physical and psychological forms of violence resulted in higher emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. Implications are discussed.

The Effect of FDI in Domestic Employment-Research of Taiwanese Inventors in Mainland China

Lin, Chin-Ching 16 January 2004 (has links)
Abstract This thesis is focus on exploring the effect that domestic manufacturing vendors investing in Mainland China vs. Taiwan domestic employment issue. That the trend of the Taiwan unemployment rate gradually increasing these years is whether not related to the domestic vendors investing in Mainland China is the main topic of what we are discovering from the research. We have been observing the yearly tendency toward investing in other countries and change of the domestic labor demand and supply. According to the labor demand theory and other factors of labor demand affected we simultaneously consider one real model is built. Afterwards, we have divided manufacturing into 15 industries that categorizes labor intensity and capital intensity depended on industry characteristic. Based on the 1991-2202 pooling data calculated by OLS, we proceed to get the real evidential analysis of the domestic labor demand effect by investing in China. The result found: labor intensity of manufacturing who invest in China have outstandingly negative effect on the Taiwan domestic labor demand that means the employment opportunity in Taiwan is dramatically decreasing. The higher the investment percentage is, the lower the domestic labor demand is. Capital intensity of manufacturing, however, have positive effect that is not that outstanding at this moment. Therefore, the reason of unemployment rate yearly increasing in general is the manufacturers¡¦ enthusiastic investing behavior to Mainland China that only happened in labor intensity of manufacturing. Beside the factor of labor manufacture, the domestic economy downside is decreasing labor demand that is one of the reasons for unemployment rate increasing.
