Biosynthesis, production and structural studies of secondary metabolites in cultured marine cyanobacteria

Vulpanovici, Florina Alexandra 23 July 2003 (has links)
This thesis details investigations of marine cyanobacterial secondary metabolism, with emphasis on a strain of Phormidium sp. collected in Indonesia. These studies assessed the effects of nineteen putative elicitor compounds on the growth and metabolite production of five species of marine cyanobacteria, biosynthetic investigation of an intriguing secondary metabolite, phormidolide, and the discovery of one novel halogenated peptide, phormidamide. The growth, biomass production and the ratio of the components of the extract were affected by some of the elicitors in most of the cyanobacterial species tested. However, production of a novel secondary metabolite or a significant change in the bioactivity of the extracts was not observed. Biosynthetic investigations of a brominated brine shrimp toxic polyketide, phormidolide, were conducted on a cultured Phormidium sp. strain originally isolated from Indonesia. Stable isotope feeding experiments confirmed its polyketide nature and established a new example of a general trend in cyanobacterial metabolism where both S-adenosyl methionine and C2 of acetate contribute to the biogenesis of pendant methyl groups. At the same time, feedings with deuterated acetate provided insight into the HMG-CoA synthase-like mechanism by which addition of pendant methyl groups from C2 of acetate takes place. Studies of phormidolide production in bromine-depleted medium showed that two analogs are produced, debromophormidolide with a terminal olefin in place of the vinyl bromide, and iodophormidolide, introducing iodine in place of bromine from the trace amounts present in the medium. Supplementation of the bromine-depleted culture medium with iodine resulted in a 10-fold increase of iodophormidolide production, while bromine supplementation resulted in a more moderate (2.5 fold) enhancement in phormidolide yield. A novel halogenated cytotoxic peptide, phormidamide, was isolated and a planar structure is proposed, pending confirmation by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Phormidamide contains a unique bromophenylalanine functionality, three chlorine atoms, and a very high number of quaternary carbon atoms which have hindered structural elucidation efforts through spectroscopic methods. / Graduation date: 2004

The Persatuan Islam (Islamic Union).

Federspiel, Howard M. January 1966 (has links)
Several basic papers have been written by students at the Institute of Islamic Studies dealing with political-religious movements in Indonesia during the twentieth century. This study of the Persatuan (abbreviated Persis) is not intended to take issue with these studies, but rather to supplement them and provide a fuller picture of Indonesian Islam in the twentieth century. The Partai Persatuan Pembangunan : the political journey of Islam under Indonesia's new order (1973-1987)

Hakim, Sudarnoto Abdul January 1993 (has links)
This thesis deals with the PPP, from its emergence in 1973 until 1987. The study attempts to describe the political journey of this party. It examines the position of the PPP in the political system of Indonesia's New Order as a whole. Immediately after the rise of the New Order government, a systematic program to restructure and simplify the political system was launched. It aimed, primarily, at national stability and the elimination of ideological politics. To the New Order government, an Islamic ideological orientation would only lead to conflicts among political forces and cause chaos, as experienced during the liberal democracy of the Old Order government. The emergence of the PPP being a consequence of the political restructuring launched by the government, the expectation was that it would be a good partner of the government. However, in the first five years of its existence, the PPP tended towards radical politics opposing the government on religious grounds. This opposition, which was again manifested towards the end of the 1970s, was seen by the government as an attempt by Islamic political groups to replace the Pancasila with Islam as the nation's ideology. Such a perception caused a lengthy internal conflict within the partial itself, particularly between the NU and MI, or between the idealist and realist groups. The internal situation of the PPP helped the government enforce the Pancasila as the sole foundation of all social and political parties. The significance of this thesis lies in the fact that no attempt has so far been made to study Islam and politics under the New Order government with a particular focus on the PPP.

Modernization of social work and the state : a critical survey of its historical development in Indonesia

Hakim, Budi Rahman January 2004 (has links)
This thesis critically surveys the dynamics of social work modernization in the state of Indonesia. The study examines the polarization, characteristics and trends of social work throughout the history of Indonesia. The survey begins by reviewing the two contexts of the historical developments of social work in both the developed and developing countries of the Third World. This historical overview is pivotal to place the context of social work development in Indonesia. Tracing the origins and the nature of 'social work' in Indonesia under the pre- and colonial rule will further highlight the course of its development. The adoption of modern social work in the post-colonial is examined afterward. The historical examination of social work in Indonesia is particularly relevant in underscoring the roots of the present criticism leveled at Indonesian social policy and work.

The decline of the Islamic empire of Aceh (1641-1699)

Auni, Luthfi January 1993 (has links)
This thesis deals with the history of the Acehnese Islamic empire, focusing on the events leading up to its decline in both its internal stability and its hegemony in the surrounding regions in the second half of the seventeenth century. During the given period (1641-1699) the empire was ruled successively by four female rulers. The thesis deals with the political and economic developments in this period. / Aceh was an Islamic empire in the Indonesian archipelago which emerged as the greatest and most influential Islamic power in the region from the middle of the sixteenth century to the early seventeenth century. It reached its golden age during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1607-1636) who succeeded in developing the empire into an unrivaled Muslim power whose control included the West Sumatran coast and the Malay peninsula. During his reign, Aceh became the holder of the political and economic hegemony in the region. / Towards the second half of the seventeenth century, the power of Aceh gradually declined from its peak both internally and externally. Internally, political disintegration paved the way for the process of power transition between political groups within the empire. Externally, both the political importance and the economic supremacy of the empire in the region was drastically reduced. Consequently, its power again shrank back into the north-Sumatran area from which the empire originally emerged.

Omah : the construction of meanings in Javanese domestic settings

Santosa, Revianto Budi. January 1997 (has links)
Domestic space is a primary site for cultural reproduction. When the inhabitants intensively interact with domestic space, the house receives its cultural significance. This thesis aims to understand how, through practices, meanings are embodied in the spatial formation of the Javanese house, and how these meanings in return affect the spatiality of certain practices. The subject of these observations are four houses of considerably different scales and forms, which range from a simple single-structure house to the elaborate Sultan's palace. The domestic activities observed encompass three types of activities: daily life, ritual celebrations, and theatrical performances. My study is based on direct observation and involvement in such activities, personal interviews, and the published works of other scholars. The central arguments of the thesis are that the two-part division of the house is legible in all these examples and that this front-rear division has a dynamic relationship with established cultural practices.
