"Att jobba bara för att jobba" : En diskursanalys om industriarbetares inställning till arbete inom ramen för den senkapitalistiska arbetslinjen / Work for work´s sake : A Discourse Analysis of Industrial Workers Attitudes towards Labour given ”Arbetslinjen” in the Late Capitalist Welfare StateJohannesson, Camilla January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this research paper is to identify and explore industrial workers attitudes towards labour considering the context of the late capitalist welfare state and the political term ”Arbetslinjen”. Furthermore the paper aims to critically examine how practices of power and resistance operates in the postmodern factory. The study relates this notion to a discourse analysis framework in addition to a foucauldian understanding of power, discipline and resistance. Theory is used to argue that factory workers attitudes are influenced by institutionalized and hegemonic discourse that constitute wage labour as the macro-political norm. Additionally the study asserts that wage workers basis for work-related resistance is conditional given power relations in the capitalist production hierarchy in addition to the rise of temporary work agencies. The empirical data consists of qualitative interviews with ten industrial workers which are all involved in the Swedish car or food manufacturing industry. Throughout the study applies a social constructionist approach, consequently the cardinal focus of my analysis is subjective attitudes and perceptions of the constitution of wage labour generally, and industrial work particularly.

Patterns of migration and socio-economic change in Lao PDRPhouxay, Kabmanivanh January 2010 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to investigate patterns and consequences of internal and international migration in Laos during the period 1985-2005 on both a macro-and a micro-level. The thesis focuses on the influences of socio-economic change and government policies on inter-regional and rural-urban migration as well as on crossborder migration from Laos to Thailand. The study also examines the effects of migration and industrial factory work on gender relations during economic transition and consequences of undocumented migration to Thailand. The background consists of a discussion on socio-economic change within the country and on government policies influencing migration patterns, as well as on how socio-economic change, urbanization and industrialization in the region affect internal and international migration in Laos. The thesis consists of three empirical studies which derive from different sources of data; the first is based on Population Censuses in 1995 and 2005 and the second and the third draw from empirical surveys in 2004-2005 and 2006. Paper I focuses on how socioeconomic factors and government policies influence migration patterns in Laos. The paper found that the interregional migration rate decreased in the later census period. This was due to significantly higher rural-rural migration in the earlier period, which in turn was influenced by various types of government policies. Papers II and III are based on micro surveys; paper II focuses on an urban industrial area in Vientiane Capital and explores the current feminization of rural-urban migrations during economic transition with specific focus on the effects of industrial work on gender roles and status of women as industrial workers. Industrial work was seen by the women as temporary jobs for saving money, for sending remittances, and for either returning home or moving to other jobs in Vientiane or Thailand. Paper III is based on surveys in three provinces, and deals with undocumented migration from Laos to Thailand and its consequences. Different income levels, existing social networks, similar language and socio-cultural backgrounds were determinants of cross-border migrations. The study found that migrants who had contacts with informal brokers were highly exposed to risks of human trafficking and violence.

A theology of decent work : reflections from casual workers in the N D J Ethiopian Catholic Church in Zion in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal.Zwane, Sithembiso Samuel. January 2012 (has links)
The rapid changes in the world of work today have resulted in the paradigm shift from standard to non-standard types of employment. These changes are intimately connected with the world of the economy that has brought extreme inequalities between rich and poor in the world. First, the primary objective of this thesis is to discuss the concept of work in the context of the paradigm shift using Karl Marx's concept of alienation manifested within a capitalist society driven by the institutions of economic globalization. This paradigm shift has seen an increase in casualization of work across the globe. The thesis provides an analysis of the contemporary changes in countries like Brazil, Argentina, Japan and South Africa. These changes have influenced the International Labour Organization (ILO) to reflect on the alternative types of work that are dignified hence its call for the adoption of decent work by affiliated countries. Second, the thesis explores the concept of decent work as proposed by the ILO. The thesis deals comprehensively with the four components of decent work analysing its relevance to the world of work today. In addition, the thesis critically analyses South Africa‟s New Growth Path as a policy framework designed to ensure the realization of decent work. Third, the thesis proposes a theology of decent work as an alternative to a paradigm shift from standard to non-standard type employment. Using the Contextual Bible Study (CBS) as a tool for liberation theology the thesis argues vehemently for an alternative type of employment. It provides the tools for churches and ecumenical organizations to speak theologically and prophetically about work today. Economic Globalization Casualization Decent Work Contextual Bible Study (CBS) and Theology. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2012.
