This study originated in the phenomenon that has been observed in the South African Saddle Horse Industry of substantial investments being made over time in the absence of obvious financial or economic reward. A literature study confirmed that, internationally, investment without obvious financial and economic rewards is not unknown and at the same time it was obvious that it is a rarely studied subject. From the literature study it was also evident that this phenomenon occurs where passion and, to a lesser extent, commitment is involved. Economic models on decision making is lacking in perspective on the influence of emotions which were proven to be substantial in an emotionally-laden market, such as the South African Saddle Horse industry. Consumption theory in marketing describes consumption decisions where the consumer is so influenced by emotions that rational influences barely come into play. It is in this context that the study seeks to qualify the investment decisions in the South African Saddle Horse industry by the adaption of consumption theory to investment theory. Research on the indicated strategic phenomenon fits within the critical realism paradigm and is essentially inductive, theory building research. In this case, the adaption of consumer theory as investment theory. Qualifying the influence of emotions in the investment decision – the “why” and “how” questions about a contemporary set of events, over which the researcher has no control – indicates case study as the applicable method of research. In this research, the case study theory is built by generalising case data to prior theory seeking replication or theoretical replication. With prior theory embracing the mentioned consumer theory and case selection dictated by the information, a case study can assist to identify the motivators of the investment decision. Once qualified, the influence of emotions on the investment decision in the mentioned strategic phenomenon can be quantified. Quantifying the influence of emotions on the investment decision leaves two alternatives, the first of which is developing a data set in a statistical survey. However, neuroeconomic findings indicate that opportunity cost comparisons for decisions are supported by our emotional circuitry that is commonly below our conscious awareness. This finding has the direct implication that opportunity cost questions in retrospect do not yield reliable information. The second alternative would be to use dependable historic investment decision data series, such as auction prices. But in the South African Saddle Horse industry, only African Saddle Horse Futurity (ASF) offers any usable investment decision data series, with the AACup being the mother competition in the USA, offering a compatible data series but much more complete and evolved. Therefore, in quantifying the influence of emotions on investment decisions, ASF data and extended AACup auction data is used in an Ordinary Least Squares regression (OLS) analysis and for further calculations. In the literature study it was evident that emotions will be a major influence in investment decisions in the horse industry. This was confirmed by the multiple case study, proving applicability of consumption theory to the investment decision in the South African Saddle Horse industry. The OLS analysis rendered the magnitude of influence of emotions on the investment decision as both prohibitive and irregular on the theoretical determinants of the investment decisions. In all the research done, emotions were unanimously proven to be the determining influence on the investment decision in the South African Saddle Horse industry. But in a free market system where price equates demand and supply, the confirmed influence of emotions in the establishment of price hampers the effective distribution of scarce production resources. In this, the influence of emotions results in a cost to the industry. By manipulating the data set used in the dissertation, an indication of the historic cost of the influence of emotions in the investment decision at the ASF and AACup competitions became apparent. Also, the influence of emotions can be equally crucial in, for example, exploiting economic growth potential. For example, the Saddle Horse industry is a world-wide multimillion dollar industry, with coincidently proven and strong connections with good growth potential to South Africa’s rural areas. These connections contain sustainable development potential to improve the quality of life for many people living in these rural areas. But in order to successfully exploit this potential, more information on emotions as an economic variable is needed in stimulating the industry. In accordance with the incidence of emotions as an influence in decision making, evident in literature and this research, this argument for more information is extendable to numerous other emotionally influenced markets. Spatial and temporal influence of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture-derived organic effluent on the diet of cultured Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas), determined through stable isotope analysis.

This thesis details the spatial and temporal influence of integrated multi-trophic aquaculture-derived organic effluent on the diet of cultured organic extractive organisms within an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) facility in Kyuquot Sound, British Columbia. Naturally occurring and aquaculture-derived sources of nutrients were defined using isotopic analysis of δ15N and δ13C values, in order to examine feeding patterns of a cultured bivalve species C. gigas. By examining the diet of C. gigas located within the IMTA system, and at a reference site, spatial and temporal patterns of organic-effluent influence on organic extractive components within the IMTA system can be defined. Measurements were performed over four seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter) at a reference site and at stations adjacent to the fish component of the IMTA system, at distances of 0m, 15m, and 30m. Oysters at each station were suspended in the water column at depths of 6m and 18m. Chapter two of this thesis focuses on the vertical and horizontal patterns of aquaculture derived particulate waste influence on organic extractive components within the IMTA system. Examination of δ15N and δ13C values sampled from C. gigas tissue at each station indicated both horizontal and vertical dispersion, and subsequent uptake, of aquaculture-derived effluent. The importance of aquaculture-derived effluent to the diet of C. gigas was not uniform across stations or seasons. General trends indicate the strongest reliance upon aquaculture-derived effluent as a nutritional subsidy by C. gigas suspended at depths of 18m, and those located 15m and 30m adjacent to the fish component of the IMTA system in particular. This chapter also focuses on the examination of C. gigas feeding patterns using stable isotope analysis over a seasonal timescale, to describe temporal variability in the importance of aquaculture-derived effluent to the diet of organic extractive components within an IMTA system. Examination of δ15N and δ13C values sampled from C. gigas tissue at each station indicated strong seasonal shifts in importance of aquaculture-derived effluent as a nutritional subsidy to oysters within the IMTA system. General trends suggest that C. gigas cultured within the IMTA system feed most heavily upon aquaculture-derived effluent during the winter and spring months, while importance of naturally occurring food sources are more heavily relied upon during the summer and fall months. . / Graduate

This study focuses on the importance of clothing brands on the purchasing decisions of Generation Y individuals. The research concentrates specifically on university students aged between 17 to 26 years, located in the Vaal Triangle Area. This study aims to determine if this group of Generation Y members are brand conscious in their choices of clothing brands and what influences or motivates them to buy clothing brands. The findings suggest that Generation Y students are brand conscious, in that the right choice of clothing helps them create an image and identity for themselves. Peer and family influences play a crucial role in their choice of brands as it aids in their socialisation process. In addition, advertising is an important variable in communicating brand values and establishing an image for the brand. Celebrities also have an impact on branded clothing as they promote certain attributes such as image, quality and status. However, the results of this study are limited given that the study was only conducted amongst students in the Vaal Triangle area. Furthermore, the research does not follow the individuals over time to see how their brand choices might have changed. In order to maintain Generation Y students’ loyalty, it is recommended that brand managers focus on building an emotional attachment to make their brands special and bring a lasting competitive advantage. In addition, advertising should be used not only to create awareness but also to influence brand image and preference. Reported bed net ownership and use in social contacts is associated with uptake of bed nets for malaria prevention in pregnant women in Ghana

Background: Despite progress made in the last decades, malaria persists as a pressing health issue in sub-Saharan Africa. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to infection and serious health outcomes for themselves and their unborn child. Risk can be mitigated through appropriate use of control measures such as insecticide-treated bed nets. Although social networks can influence uptake of preventive strategies, the role of social influence on bed net ownership has not been explored. During an evaluation of a bed net distribution programme, the influence of non-health care advisors on ownership and use of bed nets by pregnant women in Kumasi, Ghana was examined. Methods: Data were collected through in-person interviews with 300 pregnant women seeking antenatal care in an urban hospital in Kumasi, Ghana. Participants were asked about their bed net ownership, bed net use, and information about three personal contacts that they go to for pregnancy advice. Information about these advisors was combined into an influence score. Logistic regression models were used to determine the association between the score and bed net ownership. Those who owned a bed net were further assessed to determine if interpersonal influence was associated with self-reported sleeping under the bed net the previous night. Results: Of the 294 women in the analysis, 229 (78%) reported owning bed nets. Of these bed net owners, 139 (61%) reported using a bed net the previous night. A dose response relationship was observed between the interpersonal influence score and bed net ownership and use. Compared to the lowest influence score, those with the highest influence score (> 1 SD above the mean) were marginally more likely to own a bed net [OR = 2.37, 95% CI (0.87, 6.39)] and much more likely to use their bed net [5.38, 95% CI (1.89, 15.25)] after adjusting for other factors. Conclusions: Interpersonal influence appears to have modest impact on ownership and use of bed nets by pregnant women in an urban area of Ghana. Further investigations would need to be conducted to determine if the relationship is causal or if individuals who associate are simply more likely to have similar practices.

Piano Sonata No. 3, Op. 36 by Karol Szymanowski: Musical and Historial Influences

Polish composer, Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937) wrote a substantial number of piano works from 1899-1934, yet these works have been mostly forgotten or ignored outside his country. Szymanowski scholars divide his works into three periods. The second period represents the most radical shift in his compositional style particularly in his treatment of form, harmony and texture. This study demonstrates the musical and historical influences evident in his Piano Sonata No. 3, Op. 36 (1917), the last piano work written during his second period. Piano Sonata No. 3 exhibits elements of two contrasting styles, French Impressionism and German Romanticism. Manifestations of Szymanowski's Polish musical heritage and his cultural and social isolation during the years of the First World War (1914-1918) are also found in this sonata.This study also provides a detailed analysis of Piano Sonata No.3 in terms of form, motivic unity, thematic development, harmony, and texture. Another important aspect of my study is the extensive use of musical examples drawn from the works of Debussy, Ravel, Wagner and Strauss to demonstrate the musical influences of both French Impressionism and German Romanticism in his third sonata. In this sonata, Szymanowski mirrors French Impressionistic sound and texture through the common use of whole-tone and pentatonic scales as well as unresolved harmonies, trills, 4ths and 9ths. While drawing upon these particular techniques of Debussy and Ravel, Szymanowski's third sonata retains strong German roots in the use of motivic unity, chromaticism and textural crescendi such as those found in the operas of Wagner and Strauss.
