OER provision practices in context : a socio-technical study on OpenCourseWare initiatives in Spain

Villar Onrubia, Daniel January 2014 (has links)
Based on the idea of broadening access to learning opportunities for all by means of new Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), the Open Educational Resources (OER) movement has gained ground during the first years of the 21st Century while capturing the imagination of educators, university leaders, policy-makers and opinion leaders all over the globe. Drawing on socio-technical theories and adopting a case study research design, which involved the analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data, this thesis addresses the manifold tensions and paradoxes that may emerge out of the interplay between a highly predefined model of OER provision and the everyday realities and institutional contexts of different higher education settings. In particular, it focuses on the process of implementation by Spanish universities of OpenCourseWare (OCW) initiatives, a widely adopted model of OER provision that was originally devised at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. By examining the enactment of technology as a situated phenomenon, this study sheds light on the roles that OCW initiatives play in relation to the strategic orientation of universities and how the actual involvement of scholars in the creation of this type of materials is often curbed by some entrenched institutional arrangements and prevailing academic cultures. The findings of this thesis have theoretical as well as practical implications, which suggest that the replication of models of OER provision outside the specific settings in which they were originally devised is a rather problematic endeavour. More generally, it supports the idea that the implementation of ICTs must be always accompanied by social structures that are mindful and respectful of local specificities and institutional arrangements. Another key conclusion is that, if universities are genuinely committed to broadening access to higher education opportunities and supporting participation in life-long learning by means of ICTs, it is crucial to understand the ways and extent to which OER initiatives can actually contribute to achieving such goals.

"Desenvolvimento de ferramentas no iGeom: utilizando a geometria dinâmica no ensino presencial e a distância" / "Developing tools in iGeom: Using the dynamic geometry in the classroom and distance learning"

Isotani, Seiji 01 April 2005 (has links)
In this work, we present the development of tools on the software iGeom - Interactive Geometry on Internet, which can be used for teaching and learning Geometry. We highlight the features that simplify the integration and the use of the iGeom in distance education through Internet mainly. Presently, this kind of program is well known and the Geometry it allows is usually named Dynamic Geometry. Concisely, a Dynamic Geometry software is the computational implementation of the ruler and compass. It allows the user to drag objects and to automatically redraw the whole construction while preserving their mathematical properties. We focus three features among the main developed ones: the communication, the authoring and the automatic checking of exercises. These resources simplify the teacher’s task, when integrated into a learning management system. With them, the teacher can create exercises directly on the Web leaving to the software the task of checking each student’s answer. Moreover, the student can have, in real time, an evaluation of his own performance.

Mendonça, André Noronha Furtado de January 2015 (has links)
From results provided by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) in 2012, it was possible to verify that 51,4% of students who finished the second year of elementary school did not reach the desired level of knowledge for that stage in the ABC reading test, which evaluates Portuguese and Mathematics learning in Brazil, providing data for the society and MEC to develop new teaching policies. From data provided by the 2009 PISA report it was also possible to check that Brazil is placed 49th out of 65 nations evaluated in the Program for International Students Assessment (PISA) which, in turn, is promoted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The PISA is a three-year research applied to fifteen-year-old students worldwide. Tests comprise reading and mathematics. The reading test, which provides data for the present research, took place in 2009. In 2012 the last mathematics test took place. Although still very badly ranked, the OECD recognizes that Brazil has rapidly been advancing and that our country will probably reach the the expected reading performance standard when compared to developed countries. Such a bad score may be related to a system that combines the teaching of language with the teaching of literature. Another possible cause would be a scenario of boring and restrictive classes, which demotivate students from reading. On the other hand, reading results in an integration between the individual and their society and time, besides promoting their independence and development. Observing this context we question how Informatics in Education would contribute to accelerate this development process. A technical and innovative solution in the area of Literature and Portuguese teaching is the employment of digital games as an environment of reading stimulus. That was our case study. The age group of the individuals investigated meets analyzed by the PISA report. The selected novel for developing the digital game was Vidas Secas, by Graciliano Ramos. From the results obtained with the study and control groups to whom we applied the developed game, we believe to have demonstrated successfully that digital games contribute as an important tool to stimulate student’s interest in reading.

The widespread adoption of LMSs raises the need to evaluate the quality in use of these platforms through attributes such as usability and User eXperience (UX). For instance, if the LMS does not provide a good usability, the learner will spend more time trying to understand how to use the platform rather than learning the educational content. Similarly, a positive UX is essential to make the platform more pleasuring, appealing and satisfactory to the learner. Although several studies have been conducted to evaluate LMSs, few techniques encompass both usability and UX. This work presents the development of a technique to evaluate the usability and UX of LMSs, called TUXEL, by means of Design Science Research methodology. Additionally, we developed a tool to support the evaluation process. We conducted two empirical studies in order to assess the feasibility of the technique, while comparing it with an existing technique from the literature. Results indicated that TUXEL allowed identifying a higher number of usability problems in comparison to an adapted version of the Heuristic Evaluation, while requiring less time. / .

"Modernidade e formação de professores: a prática dos multiplicadores dos núcleos de tecnologia educacional do nordeste e a informática na educação" / Modernity and teacher formation: the 'multiplicadores' practice of the Northeast Educational Technologic Group for informatics applied to education

Abranches, Sergio Paulino 07 March 2003 (has links)
This research analyses the “multiplicadores" practice of the Northeast “Núcleo de Tecnologia Educacional" (Educational Technologic Group), who works with in-service teacher formation for informatics applied to education. This research objective is to verify the relationship between this type of teacher formation and the modernity’s concept. More then that, we intend to study how it responds to educational needs referred to teacher formation. The theoretical-base assumes that modern society has been permeated with technology, characterizing modernity as Information Society, Knowledge Society or Post-modernity. The central hypothesis is based on the idea that “multiplicadores’ associate informatics applied to education as educational modernity, and that builds new educational paradigm’s main part. The ethnography methodology used understanding of research’s problem through every day teacher’s practice. To do so, we observed teacher’s activities and carried out interviews about teacher’s every day classroom work., in order to comprehend teachers’ perceptions about their practice. The result showed a complex and contradictory situation, characterized by the actual modernity phase and “multiplicadores" own identity’s process.
