An Exploration into Biomimicry and its Application in Digital & Parametric [Architectural] Design

Panchuk, Neal January 2006 (has links)
Biomimicry is an applied science that derives inspiration for solutions to human problems through the study of natural designs, systems and processes. This thesis represents an investigation into biomimicry and includes the development of a design method based on biomimetic principles that is applied to the design of curved building surfaces whose derived integral structure lends itself to ease of manufacture and construction. <br /><br /> Three design concepts are produced that utilize a selection of natural principles of design outlined in the initial biomimetic investigation. The first design visualizes the human genome as a template on which the process of architectural design and construction can be paralleled. This approach utilizes an organizational structure for design instructions, the adherence to an economy of means, and a holistic linking of all aspects of a design characteristic of the genetic parallel. The advancement of the first design concept is illustrated through the use of a particular form of parametric design software known as GenerativeComponents. The second design concept applies the biomimetic design approach outlined in concept one to the development of ruled surfaces with an integral structure in the form of developable flat sheets. The final concept documents the creation of arbitrary curved surfaces consisting of an integral reinforcing structure in the form of folded sheet chevrons.

An ethnographically informed analysis of design intent communication in BIM-enabled architectural practice

Abdelmohsen, Sherif Morad Abdelkader 05 July 2011 (has links)
The building information model (BIM) is assumed to encompass all the required parameters, rules and attributes about a design product and process for Architecture-Engineering-Construction (AEC) practitioners in a way that is comprehendible by all participants sharing the model and that communicates their needs and intentions. The socio-cognitive day-to-day interactions that occur in the workplace imply however that there are discrepancies between what is exchanged as design information when sharing a model and what is exchanged as goals, needs and possibly conflicting intentions and interests when sharing a common ill-structured problem. The findings of an ethnographic study are presented. The study investigates affordances and limitations in BIM-enabled practice regarding the communication of design intent among design teams in the context of an architectural project. Grounded theory coding was used as a basis for analytic induction through constant comparison and examination of data from field observation, interviews and design meetings, to identify emergent conceptual categories central to the research inquiry. A "thick description" was provided that took into account the dynamic interactions among teams, including interdisciplinary, intradisciplinary and non-disciplinary interaction. By dissecting hypothetical models of shared project information offered by BIM, the dissertation identified interfaces of information exchange, states of the BIM model as a boundary object, and emergent and overlapping communities of practice that delineate the degree of completeness and correctness of a BIM model and describe its effectiveness in capturing and conveying the intent of participants upon interaction. To draw parallels to other contexts, the assumptions central to the study were discussed in relation to a spectrum of possible scenarios within the larger population of AEC firms. In light of the findings and "persona" descriptions identified in the study, the dissertation examined and proposed amendments and richer descriptions to existing surveys and market reports that address the use and benefits of BIM in the AEC industry, including topics such as the internal business value of BIM, top ways to improve value of BIM, and impact of project factors on BIM value.

Formal specification of industry foundation class concepts using engineering ontologies

Venugopal, Manu 14 November 2011 (has links)
Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) and Facilities Management (FM) involve domains that require a very diverse set of information and model exchanges to fully realize the potential of Building Information Modeling (BIM). Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) provides a neutral and open schema for interoperability. Model View Definitions (MVD) provide a common subset for specifying the exchanges using IFC, but are expensive to build, test and maintain. A semantic analysis of IFC data schema illustrates the complexities of embedding semantics in model views. A software engineering methodology based on formal specification of shared resources, reusable components and standards that are applicable to the AEC-FM industry for development of a Semantic Exchange Module (SEM) structure for IFC schema is adopted for this research. This SEM structure is based on engineering ontologies that are capable of developing more consistent MVDs. In this regard, Ontology is considered as a machine-readable set of definitions that create a taxonomy of classes and subclasses, and relationships between them. Typically, the ontology contains the hierarchical description of important entities that are used in IFC, along with their properties and business rules. This model of an ontological framework, similar to that of Semantic Web, makes the IFC more formal and consistent as it is capable of providing precise definition of terms and vocabulary. The outcome of this research, a formal classification structure for IFC implementations for the domain of Precast/ Prestressed Concrete Industry, when implemented by software developers, provides the mechanism for applications such as modular MVDs, smart and complex querying of product models, and transaction based services, based on the idea of testable and reusable SEMs. It can be extended and also helps in consistent implementation of rule languages across different domains within AEC-FM, making data sharing across applications simpler with limited rework. This research is expected to impact the overall interoperability of applications in the BIM realm.

Bortolini, Rafaela January 2015 (has links)
Logistics planning and control plays a key role in the process of assembling prefabricated building systems, and can have a major impact in project goals in terms of schedule, cost, quality and safety. The lack of construction logistics planning may cause congestion in workspaces and result in low productivity. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been pointed out as a major opportunity for the improving the performance of site logistics, especially by using 4D models to analyze construction plans as well as to reduce spatial conflicts in construction sites. However, 4D models have been often used simply for representing the installation sequence defined in a CPM network, without considering non value-adding activities, such as inventories and transportation. In order to fill this gap, this research work proposes a logistics planning and control model for engineer-to-order prefabricated building systems using BIM 4D. Constructive research was the methodological approach adopted in this investigation. Four empirical studies were carried in different construction sites of a steel fabricator company, in which logistic processes were planned and controlled. This study also proposes guidelines for integrating logistics planning and control with production planning and control, and for the use of visual management to support logistics control. The proposed model suggests that the development and use of 4D models for logistics planning and control should have a broad participation of different stakeholders.

ANÁLISE DA INTEROPERABILIDADE ENTRE OS PROGRAMAS COMPUTACIONAIS AUTODESK REVIT E ENERGYPLUS PARA A SIMULAÇÃO TÉRMICA DE EDIFICAÇÕES / ANALYSIS OF THE INTEROPERABILITY BETWEEN AUTODESK REVIT AND ENERGYPLUS FOR THERMAL SIMULATIONS IN BUILDINGS

Queiróz, Gabriel Ramos de 16 August 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The Autodesk Revit software has been increasingly used in architecture due to the advantages brought about by the incorporation of BIM technology, which combines all the information representing a real building into a single virtual model. However, its capabilities have not yet been fully explored, such as in building simulations, for which Revit lacks detailed thermal analytical features. Thus, this study aims to examine the reliability of the interoperability between Autodesk Revit 2016 and EnergyPlus 8.4.0 by using Revit models for thermal simulations in EnergyPlus, one of the most commonly used tools for this purpose. The methodology consists of case studies targeting building models based on Case 600, from ASHRAE Standard 140, and Casa Eficiente Project, located in the city of Florianópolis, Brazil. The digital models of both buildings were produced in Revit with different modelling processes (conceptual mass or building elements with rooms or spaces) and software settings. All of these BIM models were exported in IFC, gbXML and IDF file formats and later converted through the use of additional tools in order to be opened in EnergyPlus. Such files were compared with the reference model of each building produced directly in EnergyPlus, using SketchUp containing the plug-in Legacy OpenStudio, in order to check for any distortions occurring in the process of data transfer when performing model exports and conversions. This comparison was based on parameters defined for geometry, simulation settings (materials thermal properties, building use and occupation etc.) and simulation results containing outputs of monthly internal temperatures for the thermal zones of each model. The results showed variations and similarities among the different types of modelling, export processes, and file formats used, revealing that distortions in data transfer become larger the more complex the building model is. This study points out conceptual mass models from gbXML files regardless of the export mode out of Revit as a viable alternative to be used in conjunction with EnergyPlus, as they preserve the geometrical accuracy of the building, even as some Revit default settings may be transferred over, thus failing to reflect some of the aspects of the real built environment. However, it was found that Revit models in general are not recommended for these types of exports due to the resulting rework needed for correcting files. It was concluded that the interoperability between Autodesk Revit and EnergyPlus is not perfect, as their combined use allows for data transfers that make possible the thermal simulation of buildings, however, in this exchange there are distortions in the exported geometries and lack of the necessary data for correct simulation in all exported models.

Computerized tool to support the creation of BIM project procurement guidelines.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) may assist with some of the main challenges presented in the current state of the national civil construction industry, such as reducing risks and increasing productivity. However, for BIM to provide these benefits, the existence of standards and specifications is necessary, indicating what workflows should be followed, what are the expected uses, how the information will be exchanged and what properties should be included in the model. Therefore, contracting guidelines for BIM projects are developed, to ensure alignment between owner and providers in all matters related to the use of BIM in the project. Using the Constructive Research methodology, this research performed an analysis of BIM publications in countries with proven experience on successful project procurement and the proposition of a tool to support the creation of guidelines for the contracting of projects in BIM in the national civil construction market. The main objective of the proposed tool is to facilitate the generation of contracting guidelines, using well-known references on the application of BIM processes as basis, but also allowing their customization to better suit the reality of each contractor. It is expected that the tool supports contractors to overcome the barrier created by the difficulty of producing their own guideline, clarifying the specifications for contracting and supporting the implementation of BIM. This tool was evaluated in a test case, in two rounds, to assess its applicability and to gauge the obtained results, making it the basis for the development of other similar documents and for future research in the area. The evaluation proved that the tool was able to operate within the expected performance limits, facilitating the process of generation and consultation of a guideline, allowing customization by the user and fed by consolidated knowledge bases.

O Projeto da produção de formas para estrutura de concreto armado incorporando BIM / The Formwork Design for reinforced concrete structures incorporating BIM

Neiva Neto, Romeu da Silva, 1988- 08 January 2014 (has links)
Orientador: Regina Coeli Ruschel / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Civil, Arquitetura e Urbanismo / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-25T11:41:04Z (GMT). A contribuição resultante foi a virtualização do projeto de formas em BIM gerando impacto benéfico: no processo construtivo e na adoção deste novo paradigma no contexto brasileiro / Abstract: The Formwork systems that exist in the Brazilian construction industry contributes to 30 % of the cost of works of reinforced concrete structures in the country. However, builders generally do not give due attention to this subject because there are few cases in which the formwork design is developed for this purpose and when it is, often lacks detail and accuracy. This results in waste, lack of planning and delays in general schedules of projects. Thus, the aim of this research was to incorporate the concepts of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) in Formwork Construction Design (FCD). The research was restricted to reinforced concrete structures for multiple floors buildings. The scientific method used was the constructive research as it was desired to develop in an innovative way, for workshop drawings, solving real-world problems by means of a digital applied theory. The scope of the research consisted of the research problem (practical and theoretical knowledge), the formulation of the digital solution for the formwork design, solution implementation and consideration of its applicability. The solution for the formwork design encompassed incrementally different levels of design abstractions: the component (parametric modeling), quantity take-off (and cost breakdown) and site planning (4D simulation). The resulting contribution was the virtual construction for the formwork design systems incorporating BIM. That brought beneficial impacts to the construction process and to the adoption of this new paradigm in the Brazilian context / Mestrado / Arquitetura e Construção / Mestre em Engenharia Civil
