Thesis (M Social Work (Social Work))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / The purpose of this study is to develop a theoretical framework for social workers in
children’s homes that may be used for play techniques during social casework
intervention with a children’s home child. The influence that the placement in a
children’s home has on the child, creates the context for this study. Specific
behaviour- and emotional problems that exist within the child were identified and play
techniques for the solving of these problems was described.
The research was done based on an extensive literature study, which focused on the
role and function of a children’s home, the needs, behaviour- and emotional
problems of the children’s home child and the usage of a practice framework and
play techniques by social workers.
A combined qualitative and quantitative research method and an explorative and
describing research design have been used in this study, since this combination
resulted in reaching the goal of the study. The empirical research investigated the
usage of play techniques by social workers during social casework intervention with
a children’s home child. The overall sample consisted of the 23 children’s homes in
the Cape Metropole where currently 31 social workers are employed. Semistructured
questionnaires were used as an interview instrument with an availability
test sample consisting of 18 social workers.
In light of the findings derived from the literature study and empirical research,
appropriate conclusions and related recommendations were made. The main
conclusion of the study is that the participants use play techniques randomly and not
in conjunction with a practice framework. The main recommendation of this study is
that social workers should use play techniques during social casework intervention,
based on a specific practice framework in order to assure responsiveness.
Continuous education in this regard is the responsibility of each social worker
working in a children’s home.

Thesis (MEdPsych (Educational Psychology)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / The study investigated the effect of using projective narratives and drawings that depict diminished
fear, on the anxiety levels of a group of children living in children’s homes, by means of a mixed
methodology. The sample consisted of 30 middle childhood children (mean age = 9.60 years, SD =
1.13) from three children’s homes in the Western Cape. Drawings were used to elicit content of fear or
anxiety (anxiety evoking drawing/bangmaaktekening) and proposed coping (anxiety lessening
drawing/bangwegvattekening). After completing the anxiety provoking drawing, participants in the
experimental group were asked to tell a story to other children with a similar fear to lessen/take that
fear away (projective narrative). The Spence Childhood Anxiety Scale (SCAS) was completed after
each drawing, and drawings evaluated through the use of anxiety scales, to measure changes in anxiety
levels according to the concept of triangulation.
The categories ghosts, snakes, and people were found to be the most prevalent content of fear from
anxiety provoking drawings, and undifferentiated fears were also common within this population.
Control of anxiety from anxiety lessening drawings indicated a definite prevalence of emotion focused
(secondary) coping strategies, specifically religious solace. The content of projective narratives echoed
this finding, although proposed solutions were more differentiated. Ownership of projections also
occurred.
The experimental effect was not significant, although mean anxiety levels were considerably lower in
the drawings in comparison with that of the SCAS. Drawings are thus seen as an effective, nonthreatening
technique to study anxiety phenomena. A comparison of the mean item scores of the SCAS
subscales indicated that symptoms of separation anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, and obsessivecompulsive
anxiety disorder were prevalent among this group of children in children’s homes.
A clear distinction was found between markers of state- and trait-anxiety through the qualitative
analysis of the drawings, with anxiety lessening drawings showing definite diminished state-anxiety,
although more established markers of trait-anxiety did not necessarily change. There are also
indications that transference of activated negative emotional stimuli occurred on an unconscious level
between the two drawings. Introducing the combination of projective narratives in the intervention
stage of the study appeared to facilitate learning or the experience of observed positive affect in anxiety
lessened drawings.
Future research would benefit from including a normative group to establish more clear markers of
state- and trait-anxiety in drawings, and by the use of a bigger sample to investigate factor loadings of
the SCAS among children in children’s homes. The high prevalence of anxiety symptoms in this
population emphasises their status as a vulnerable population, and the need for possible group
intervention – specifically the psycho-education of effective coping strategies for anxiety.

Previous issue date: 2018-03-20 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The present dissertation has as objective to know and understand the perception of the users related to their recognition in the attention offered by a Social Assistance Service. It is the approach related to the institutional reception service, understanding the manner the social recognition expressions are made in the trajectory of attention to users, knowing the expressions of social deprotection which leads them to access a special social protection service of high complexity in the social assistance, as well identifying with families the acquisitions recognized as answers to their needs. The analytical route performed in this study demanded deepening about the scope of an institutional reception service to children from their historical evolution in Brazil and particularly the impact of legalization of social rights to the Brazilian people viable through the Federal Constitution of 1988 against the objective of Child and Adolescent Statute (ECA) and the Social Assistance Unique System (SUAS). In the course of this research, with the support of several authors it was possible to show the event which occurred historically in the legal area in overcome the attention to children in Brazil in the field of charity, favor and goodwill, supported by the value judgement for the perspective of attentions in the social right condition. To the interviews and field surveys were selected five families who had as reason of institutional reception of children the negligence or the abandonment. The study plunged in the relationship among the family, the child and the service, and being synthesized in three moments: the triggering situation of the reception: reason, complainant, procedure of the tutelary council and the judge, link with some social assistance service; the time of attention to the child in the reception and the manner of relation to the family made by the service and verified in the file records and the users’ speeches highlighting the records on: the attentions supported by the service and its direct repercussion in the life of the children, teenagers and families; the relation with the families and of their access to the public attentions and services which they would be entitled to; the ways in which social security was ensured to the children and teenagers; of activies that the children had the opportunity to experience during the institutional reception; and finally the moment of post-dismissal of the child of the reception service. It is a qualitative research whose essence was the quest to listen to users, which represents the most important step in this study, which allowed to know the meaning attributed by users to the attention of an institutional reception service / A presente dissertação tem como objetivo conhecer e compreender a percepção e as expressões dos usuários quanto ao seu reconhecimento nas atenções oferecidas por um serviço socioassistencial.

Previous issue date: 2018-05-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The research has sought to analyse how the institutional racism takes place in
black children's and teenagers daily routines and how much thispractice keeps deep
relation to the accredited forms of black bodies control during slavery period in Brazil.
The methodological procedures involved bibliographic documental research from 3
axes: racial democracy, institutional racism and institutional sheltering, whose analytical
reading allows it to establish the criticism to the infancy attention model, materialised
into the service daily routine; and field research in the institutions with the realization of
focus group directed to the professionals. By immersing into the complex institutional
sheltering process, behind the appearance of a safe place - with a roof, warm bed and
five daily meals - a fact that professionals present it as a synonym of sheltering, what in
fact is revealed as a projected institution to frame these children and adolescents,
condemn them to confinement and reinforce, besides the non-belonging concept, their
families' degeneration. If the daily-life is a place for thoughtless practices and loaded
with ideology, the institutional sheltering services also incorporate these practices and
perform the institutional racism, without embarrassement, because they represent the
State which has played their eminent role of "poor" infancy and adolescence guardian. It
is concluded that the institutional sheltering service target public has history, social class
and race/color, and the priority task is to emerge this history so that the essence of
sheltering phenomenon may be known as one more maneuver of controlling capitalism
over the worker's class / A pesquisa buscou analisar como se materializa o racismo institucional no

The subjective experiences and self-identity of institution-cared children with incarcerated parent(s) in China: 院舍照料的服刑人員子女主觀生活經驗與身份認同研究(中國) / 院舍照料的服刑人員子女主觀生活經驗與身份認同研究(中國) / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / subjective experiences and self-identity of institution-cared children with incarcerated parent(s) in China: Yuan she zhao liao de fu xing ren yuan zi nü zhu guan sheng huo jing yan yu shen fen ren tong yan jiu (Zhongguo) / Yuan she zhao liao de fu xing ren yuan zi nü zhu guan sheng huo jing yan yu shen fen ren tong yan jiu (Zhongguo)January 2013 (has links)
This is a qualitative research project conducted on children in institutional care who have incarcerated parent(s) in China with the purpose of exploring the subjective living experiences and self-identity of these children. A homogeneous sample of seventeen children in institutional care who have incarcerated parents, a sample of seven institutional staff, three school teachers, and four family members who were these children’s previous caregivers, were included according to purposive sampling procedures. This study employed narrative analysis as the method used to analyze the data collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews. / With the assumption that identity formation is a process of social construction, the study proposes a theoretical framework consisting of Chinese social and cultural contexts, the family, the societal context, and the children’s subjective experience and identity. This comes after a comprehensive review of the literature on empirical services, polices, and research on children with incarnated parents, theories concerning identity and identity development, and the dominant ideologies about incarceration in the Chinese context. / This study finds that parental incarceration eventually changes these children’s lives so that they suffer helplessness, abandonment and uncertainty. Grateful feelings emerge when they enter a charitable institution that provides them with a relatively stable and secure living environment. There children are referred to or refer to themselves as “children of the institution”. This public label covers their status as inferior, as service recipients of an institution, and the misunderstood status of “orphan. These children develop paradoxical feelings towards these different labels and their self-identity is actually incarcerated in the parent-child relationship along with the incarcerated parents. The internalized ignominy of being children of incarcerated parents further enhances their feeling of inferiority as service recipients of an institution. / To understand the self-identity of these institutionally reared children with incarcerated parents (CIP), as well as its formation process in the Chinese socio-cultural context, the study develops a model that includes elements such as the Chinese moral censure of criminals, familial belief, and the individual-familial responsibility and the concept of “Bao”. These three ideas not only directly impact these children’s self-identity, but also comprise the basis for discourses in the three sub-contexts in which these children derive their living experiences and develop their self-identities. These socio-cultural beliefs are generally held by actors in various situations, and cultural messages are conveyed to these children by those actors through interaction with the children, and these cultural messages shaped the children’s’ subjective experiences and identities. / Based on the findings of this research, the researcher proposes suggestions for social works services for children with incarcerated parents from both micro and macro perspectives, and suggests directions for future research. / Xia, Lili. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2013. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 269-296). / Abstracts and appendixes also in Chinese. / Title from PDF title page (viewed on 20, December, 2016). / Xia, Lili. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only.

The theme of this thesis is the analysis of socially pathological issues in the context of placing children into children's homes. It investigates the causes of these issues and possible methods of prevention. At the beginning of the thesis there is a brief characteristics and history of institutional care in the Czech Republic. There is also a part about the formation of socially pathological issues based on internal and external causes in humans life. Furthermore there is a detailed analysis of certain socially pathological issues in the families and their influence on a child's development. These specific issues were chosen based on findings made in Children's Home Dolní Počernice. In the conclusion of the theoretical part of this thesis there are mentioned possible ways of supporting families - as a method of prevention of placing children into institutional care. Especially focused was the method Housing First and its first testing in Brno, where the positive impact on the quality of life of participating families was achieved. The research part of this thesis was realized via a quantitative survey - 61 files of children placed into Children's Home Dolní Počernice were analyzed in June 2018. I focused mainly on the causes of placing the child into the institutional care, family conditions, and...

Transit i samhällsvården : När unga utreds på särskilda ungdomshem / Transit in out-of-home care : Assessments of young people in secure accommodationsEnell, Sofia January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is about assessments of young people in secure accommodations. Institutional assessments relate to the paradox in child welfare of combining control and care. The procedure raises questions about their implications for young people, their caseworkers and evolving care trajectories. Although institutional assessments of young people have a historical heritage, research about their implications is lacking. The aim of the thesis is to explore young people’s and their caseworkers’ experiences of assessments in secure accommodations and their implications for young people’s care trajectories. Methods used are primarily repeated interviews with 16 young people during a period of two years and one interview with their caseworkers. Surveys about 85 youths, participatory observations and written assessments are also included. This thesis takes an interactionist approach and the material has been analysed with the main concept of care trajectory along with the concepts of self-presentation, total institution, institutional identity and texts as coordinators. The results are presented in four papers. The concluding analysis shows that assessments in secure accommodations can be divided into three elements: the practice, the text and the placement. These three elements have different implications for the young people and the caseworkers. For the young people the practice and the placement converge into an assessment universe that, with the text, intensifies their shaping of self-identity. The young people’s experiences are characterised by lack of control over their self-presentations, the present and the future. For the caseworkers, the practice has implications for their understanding of the young people’s individual troubles, the text for negotiating with other actors and the placement in their efforts to achieve change in the young people’s troublesome situations. The assessments’ implications for stability and foreseeability in the young people’s further care trajectories are limited. Moreover, the procedure of assessing young people in itself contains instability through involving several professionals in different parts of the assessment and decision-making process. Despite lack of stability, the thesis reveals that some young people experience the assessment as a place for self-development and where the course of the care trajectory changes to the better.
