Designing Robust Trust Establishment Models with a Generalized Architecture and a Cluster-Based Improvement Methodology

In Multi-Agent Systems consisting of intelligent agents that interact with one another, where the agents are software entities which represent individuals or organizations, it is important for the agents to be equipped with trust evaluation models which allow the agents to evaluate the trustworthiness of other agents when dishonest agents may exist in an environment. Evaluating trust allows agents to find and select reliable interaction partners in an environment. Thus, the cost incurred by an agent for establishing trust in an environment can be compensated if this improved trustworthiness leads to an increased number of profitable transactions. Therefore, it is equally important to design effective trust establishment models which allow an agent to generate trust among other agents in an environment. This thesis focuses on providing improvements to the designs of existing and future trust establishment models. Robust trust establishment models, such as the Integrated Trust Establishment (ITE) model, may use dynamically updated variables to adjust the predicted importance of a task’s criteria for specific trustors. This thesis proposes a cluster-based approach to update these dynamic variables more accurately to achieve improved trust establishment performance. Rather than sharing these dynamic variables globally, a model can learn to adjust a trustee’s behaviours more accurately to trustor needs by storing the variables locally for each trustor and by updating groups of these variables together by using data from a corresponding group of similar trustors. This work also presents a generalized trust establishment model architecture to help models be easier to design and be more modular. This architecture introduces a new transaction-level preprocessing module to help improve a model’s performance and defines a trustor-level postprocessing module to encapsulate the designs of existing models. The preprocessing module allows a model to fine-tune the resources that an agent will provide during a transaction before it occurs. A trust establishment model, named the Generalized Trust Establishment Model (GTEM), is designed to showcase the benefits of using the preprocessing module. Simulated comparisons between a cluster-based version of ITE and ITE indicate that the cluster-based approach helps trustees better meet the expectations of trustors while minimizing the cost of doing so. Comparing GTEM to itself without the preprocessing module and to two existing models in simulated tests exhibits that the preprocessing module improves a trustee’s trustworthiness and better meets trustor desires at a faster rate than without using preprocessing.

Addressing Automated Adversaries of Network Applications

The Internet supports a perpetually evolving patchwork of network services and applications. Popular applications include the World Wide Web, online commerce, online banking, email, instant messaging, multimedia streaming, and online video games. Practically all networked applications have a common objective: to directly or indirectly process requests generated by humans. Some users employ automation to establish an unfair advantage over non-automated users. The perceived and substantive damages that automated, adversarial users inflict on an application degrade its enjoyment and usability by legitimate users, and result in reputation and revenue loss for the application's service provider. This dissertation examines three challenges critical to addressing the undesirable automation of networked applications. The first challenge explores individual methods that detect various automated behaviors. Detection methods range from observing unusual network-level request traffic to sensing anomalous client operation at the application-level. Since many detection methods are not individually conclusive, the second challenge investigates how to combine detection methods to accurately identify automated adversaries. The third challenge considers how to leverage the available knowledge to disincentivize adversary automation by nullifying their advantage over legitimate users. The thesis of this dissertation is that: there exist methods to detect automated behaviors with which an application's service provider can identify and then systematically disincentivize automated adversaries. This dissertation evaluates this thesis using research performed on two network applications that have different access to the client software: Web-based services and multiplayer online games.

Multi-Agent Based Control and Reconfiguration for Restoration of Distribution Systems with Distributed Generators

Restoration entails the development of a plan consisting of opening or closing of switches, which is called reconfiguration. This dissertation proposes the design of a fast and efficient service restoration with a load shedding method for land-based and ship systems, considering priority of customers and several other system operating constraints. Existing methods, based on centralized restoration schemes that require a powerful central computer, may lead to a single point of failure. This research uses a decentralized scheme based on agents. A group of agents created to realize a specific goal by their interactions is called a Multi-Agent System (MAS). Agents and their behaviors are developed in Java Agent DEvelopment Framework (JADE) and the power system is simulated in the Virtual Test Bed (VTB). The large-scale introduction of Distributed Generators (DGs) in distribution systems has made it increasingly necessary to develop restoration schemes considering DG. The separation of utility causes the system to decompose into electrically isolated islands with generation and load imbalance that can have severe consequences. Automated load shedding schemes are essential for systems with DGs, since the disconnection of the utility can lead to instability much faster than an operator intervention can repair. Load shedding may be the only option to maintain the island when conditions are so severe as to require correction by restoration schemes. Few algorithms have been reported for the problem of maintaining the island, even though load shedding has been reported for power systems using underrequency and under-voltage criteria. This research proposes a new operational strategy for sudden generator-load imbalance due to loss of utility that dynamically calculates the quantity of load to be shed for each island and the quantity of load that can be restored. Results presented in this dissertation are among the first to demonstrate a state-of-the-art MAS for load shedding under islanded conditions and restoration of the shed loads. The load shedding and restoration schemes developed here have behaviors that can incorporate most of the distribution topologies. Achieving service restoration with DG is complicated but new automated switch technologies and communications make MAS a better scheme than existing schemes.

iSemServ: a framework for engineering intelligent semantic services

The need for modern enterprises and Web users to simply and rapidly develop and deliver platform-independent services to be accessed over the Web by the global community is growing. This is self-evident, when one considers the omnipresence of electronic services (e-services) on the Web. Accordingly, the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is commonly considered as one of the de facto standards for the provisioning of heterogeneous business functionalities on the Web. As the basis for SOA, Web Services (WS) are commonly preferred, particularly because of their ability to facilitate the integration of heterogeneous systems. However, WS only focus on syntactic descriptions when describing the functional and behavioural aspects of services. This makes it a challenge for services to be automatically discovered, selected, composed, invoked, and executed – without any human intervention. Consequently, Semantic Web Services (SWS) are emerging to deal with such a challenge. SWS represent the convergence of Semantic Web (SW) and WS concepts, in order to enable Web services that can be automatically processed and understood by machines operating with limited or no user intervention. At present, research efforts within the SWS domain are mainly concentrated on semantic services automation aspects, such as discovery, matching, selection, composition, invocation, and execution. Moreover, extensive research has been conducted on the conceptual models and formal languages used in constructing semantic services. However, in terms of the engineering of semantic services, a number of challenges are still prevalent, as demonstrated by the lack of development and use of semantic services in real-world settings. The lack of development and use could be attributed to a number of challenges, such as complex semantic services enabling technologies, leading to a steep learning curve for service developers; lack of unified service platforms for guiding and supporting simple and rapid engineering of semantic services, and the limited integration of semantic technologies with mature service-oriented technologies. vi In addition, a combination of isolated software tools is normally used to engineer semantic services. This could, however, lead to undesirable consequences, such as prolonged service development times, high service development costs, lack of services re-use, and the lack of semantics interoperability, reliability, and re-usability. Furthermore, available software platforms do not support the creation of semantic services that are intelligent beyond the application of semantic descriptions, as envisaged for the next generation of services, where the connection of knowledge is of core importance. In addressing some of the challenges highlighted, this research study adopted a qualitative research approach with the main focus on conceptual modelling. The main contribution of this study is thus a framework called iSemServ to simplify and accelerate the process of engineering intelligent semantic services. The framework has been modelled and developed, based on the principles of simplicity, rapidity, and intelligence. The key contributions of the proposed framework are: (1) An end-to-end and unified approach of engineering intelligent semantic services, thereby enabling service engineers to use one platform to realize all the modules comprising such services; (2) proposal of a model-driven approach that enables the average and expert service engineers to focus on developing intelligent semantic services in a structured, extensible, and platform-independent manner. Thereby increasing developers’ productivity and minimizing development and maintenance costs; (3) complexity hiding through the exploitation of template and rule-based automatic code generators, supporting different service architectural styles and semantic models; and (4) intelligence wrapping of services at message and knowledge levels, for the purposes of automatically processing semantic service requests, responses and reasoning over domain ontologies and semantic descriptions by keeping user intervention at a minimum. The framework was designed by following a model-driven approach and implemented using the Eclipse platform. It was evaluated using practical use case scenarios, comparative analysis, and performance and scalability experiments. In conclusion, the iSemServ framework is considered appropriate for dealing with the complexities and restrictions involved in engineering intelligent semantic services, especially because the amount of time required to generate intelligent semantic vii services using the proposed framework is smaller compared with the time that the service engineer would need to manually generate all the different artefacts comprising an intelligent semantic service. Deployed virtual consulting: the fusion of wearable computing, collaborative technology, augmented reality and intelligent agents to support fleet aviation maintenance

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / This thesis addresses the need of Naval Aviation Maintenance to streamline and more effectively manage the process of technical consultation aboard deployed aircraft carriers. The current process involves the physical transportation of an appropriate technician to the carrier to perform required maintenance and/or repairs. In light of the technology currently available this process becomes obviously obsolete, overly costly and needlessly time consuming. By implementing wireless technology in combination with advanced software allowing the virtual collaboration of parties widely separated by geographical distance the Navy can establish a "virtual technical presence" onboard aircraft carriers wherever they may be in the world. This thesis will describe how the fusion of wearable computing, augmented reality, intelligent agents coupled with CoABS, and a modern collaborative software application can revolutionize Naval aviation maintenance as we know it. The technology is there - it only remains for the Navy to leverage it and take advantage of the significant returns that it will provide. The implementation of this technology will allow maintainers onboard deployed aircraft carriers to consult in an augmented virtual environment with technical assets on the shore. These shore-based assets will then be able to "walk" deployed personnel through complicated repair procedures in a matter of minutes or hours as opposed to the previous need to wait for days for the technician to arrive. This is a bold and innovative new concept that will allow commands at sea to increase their levels of combat readiness and allow them the ability to respond to ever changing mission needs. Turn around times for the repair of critical parts and assemblies will be reduced and readiness levels elevated. The ultimate goal of any command is mission accomplishment. A model for enhancing software project management using software agent technology

The present study has originated from the realisation that numerous software development projects either do not live up to expectations or fail outright. The scope, environment and implementation of traditional software projects have changed due to various reasons such as globalisation, advances in computing technologies and, last but not least, the development and deployment of software projects in distributed, collaborative and virtual environments. As a result, traditional project management methods cannot and do not address the added complexities found in this ever-changing environment. In this study the processes and procedures associated with software project management (SPM) were explored. SPM can be defined as the process of planning, organising, staffing, monitoring, controlling and leading a software project. The current study is principally aimed at making a contribution to enhancing and supporting SPM. A thorough investigation into software agent computing resulted in the realisation that software agent technology can be regarded as a new paradigm that may be used to support the SPM processes. A software agent is an autonomous system that forms part of an environment, can sense the environment and act on it over a period of time, in pursuit of its own agenda. The software agent can also perceive, reason and act by selecting and executing an appropriate action. The unique requirements of SPM and the ways in which agent technology may address these were subsequently identified. It was concluded that agent technology is specifically suited to geographically distributed systems, large network systems and mobile devices. Agents provide a natural metaphor for support in a team environment where cooperation and the coordination of actions toward a common goal, as well as the monitoring and controlling of actions are strongly supported. Although it became evident that agent technology is indeed being applied to areas and sections of the SPM environment, it is not being applied to the whole spectrum, i.e. to all core and facilitating functions of SPM. If software agents were to be used across the whole spectrum of SPM processes, this could provide a significant advantage to software project managers who are currently using other contemporary methods. The "SPMSA" model (Software Project Management supported by Software Agents) was therefore proposed. This model aims to enhance SPM by taking into account the unique nature and changing environment of software projects. The SPMSA model is unique as it supports the entire spectrum of SPM functionality, thus supporting and enhancing each key function with a team of software agents. Both the project manager and individual team members will be supported during software project management processes to simplify their tasks, eliminate the complexities, automate actions and enhance coordination and communication. Virtual teamwork, knowledge management, automated workflow management and process and task coordination will also be supported. A prototype of a section of the risk management key function of the SPMSA model was implemented as `proof of concept'. This prototype may be expanded to include the entire SPMSA model and cover all areas of SPM. Finally, the SPMSA model was verified by comparing the SPM phases of the model to the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle. These phases of the SPMSA model were furthermore compared to the basic phases of software development as prescribed by the ISO 10006:2003 standard for projects. In both cases the SPMSA model compared favourably. Hence it can be concluded that the SPMSA model makes a fresh contribution to the enhancement of SPM by utilising software agent technology. / School of Computing / Ph. D. (Computer Science)
