Effects of a Fat-sugar Supplemented Diet, with and Without Exercise Training, on Body Fat Mass and Selected Cardiometabolic Risk Markers in Overweight and Obese, Sedentary Males

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: The winter holiday period has been highlighted as a major risk period for weight gain due to excess caloric intake in the form of fat and sugar. Furthermore, diets high in fat and sugar have been implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Exercise aids in the prevention of weight/fat gain, and prevents deleterious changes in cardiometabolic function. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of a fat-sugar supplemented diet, with and without two different exercise training protocols, on body composition, glycemic control and other markers of cardiovascular disease in an at-risk population of overweight and obese males. Twenty-seven, healthy overweight/obese (BMI >25 kg/m2) males were fed 2 donuts per day, 6 days/week, for four weeks, while maintaining their current diet. In addition, all subjects were randomized to one of the following conditions: sedentary control, 1,000 kcal/week moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) (50% of peak oxygen consumption), or 1,000 kcal/week high-intensity interval training (HIIT) (90-95% of peak heart rate). Supervised exercise training was performed 4 days/week on a cycle ergometer. Changes in body weight and composition, endothelial function, arterial stiffness, glycemic control, blood lipids and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) were assessed before and after the intervention. Body weight, lean mass and visceral fat increased significantly in HIIT (p<0.05) and were unchanged in MICT. There was a trend for a significant increase in body weight (p=0.07) and lean mass (p=0.11) in control. Glycemic control during the 2-h OGTT improved significantly in MICT and control, with no change in HIIT. Hepatic insulin resistance index (IRI) and 30-min insulin during the OGTT improved significantly after MICT and worsened following control (p=0.03), while HIIT was unchanged. CRF increased significantly in both HIIT and MICT, with no change in control (p<0.001). There were no significant changes in other markers of cardiovascular disease. The addition of a fat-sugar supplement (~14,500 kcal) over a 4-week period was not sufficient to induce deleterious changes in body composition and cardiometabolic health in overweight/obese young males. Exercise training did not afford overweight/obese males additional health benefits, with the exception of improvements in fitness and hepatic IRI. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Physical Activity, Nutrition and Wellness 2016

Měření rychlých proudových změn částicového svazku urychlovače LHC / Fast Beam Current Change Monitor for the LHC

Král, Jan January 2014 (has links)
Striktní nároky na systémy ochrany a zabezpečení LHC vyžadují vylepšené metody detekce rychlých ztrát částicového svazku. Rychlý proudový transformátor (FBCT) je měřicí přístroj poskytující informaci o intenzitě shluků urychlovaných částic. Tato diplomová práce popisuje vývoj nového systému ochrany LHC založeného na měření signálu FBCT. Tento systém, monitor rychlých proudových změn částicového svazku (FBCCM), měří signál FBCT v úzkém frekvenčním pásmu a počítá časovou derivaci okamžité amplitudy tohoto signálu.

A Level of Care Instrument for Children's Systems of Care: Construction, Reliability and Validity

Fallon, Theodore, Pumariega, Andres, Sowers, Wesley, Klaehn, Robert, Huffine, Charles, Vaughan, Thomas, Winters, Nancy, Chenven, Mark, Marx, Larry, Zachik, Albert, Heffron, William, Grimes, Katherine 01 January 2006 (has links)
The Child and Adolescent Level of Care System/Child and Adolescent Service Intensity Instrument (CALOCUS/ CASH) is designed to help determine the intensity of services needed for a child served in a mental health system of care. The instrument contains eight dimensions that are rated following a comprehensive clinical evaluation. The dimensions are risk of harm, functionality, co-morbidity (psychiatric, substance abuse, development disability and medical), environmental stressors, environmental supports, the child's resiliency, and the child and family's willingness to engage in treatment. An algorithm connects the ratings to a level of care recommendation. The instrument specifies six levels of care defined flexibly enough to consider whatever services are available. The results of psychometric testing using raters with a broad range of clinical experience and training from four different systems of care around the country are presented. The testing demon-strates excellent reliability when rating vignettes. Using children and adolescents in live system of care clinical settings, the CALOCUS/CASH demonstrates reasonable validity when compared with the Child Global Assessment Scale, and the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale.

Bandlimited Optical Intensity Modulation Under Average and Peak Power Constraints

Zhang, Dingchen January 2016 (has links)
Bandlimited optical intensity channels, arising in applications such as indoor infrared communications and visible light communications (VLC), require that all signals satisfy a bandwidth constraint as well as average, peak and non-negative amplitude constraints. However, the signaling designed for conventional radio frequency (RF) electrical channels cannot be applied directly, since they take energy constraints into consideration instead of amplitude constraints. In addition, conventional transmission techniques optimized for broad-band optical channels such as fiber optics, terrestrial/satellite-to-satellite free-space optical (FSO) communications are typically not bandwidth efficient. In this thesis, a two-dimensional signal space for bandlimited optical intensity channels is presented. A novel feature of this model is that the non-negativity and peak amplitude constraints are relaxed. The signal space parameterizes the likelihood of a negative or peak amplitude excursions in the output. Although the intensity channel only supports non-negative amplitudes, the impact of clipping on system performance is shown to be negligible if the likelihood of negative amplitude excursion is small enough. For a given signal space, a tractable approximation approach using a finite series is applied to accurately compute the likelihood of clipping under average and peak optical power constraints. The uncoded asymptotic optical power and spectral efficiencies using two-dimensional lattice constellations are computed. The Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation results show that for a given average or peak optical power, schemes designed in the presented signal space haver higher spectral efficiency than M-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) using previously established techniques. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

En Pilotstudie / Perceived exertion during cardio training : A comparison between high intensity cardio training and low intensity cardio training and perceived exertion.

Sundberg Jones, Daniel January 2019 (has links)
Abstract Background: A lot of people exercise for the sake of health and wellbeing while others want to improve their physical performance. Improving their cardio fitness is an important part of that. Objective: The objective of this study is to examine differences in perceived exertion after having followed a high intensity programme (HIIT) in comparison with a group that followed a low intensity training programme. Design: Pilot study Methods & measures: The study was done with a quantitative approach where two groups of subjects, a total of 10 performed physical effort during four weeks. One group of 5 performed high intensity workouts and the other group of 5 low intensity workouts. Prior to performing the four week programme the subjects estimated their perceived exertion after a fitness test. The same test was then repeated after four weeks. Results: Two out of five subjects that followed the low intensity programme estimated lower on Borgs RPE scale after the four weeks. Out of those who followed the high intensity programme (HIIT), three out of five estimated lower. Conclusion: To be able to generalize the results from this study it needs to be performed on a larger population. The results of this pilot study due to the amount of participants are likely due to chance.

Efeitos do ultra-som pulsado de baixa intensidade sobre a musculatura lisa e sobre o epitélio endometrial em úteros de ratas adultas, após uterotomia: estudo experimental / Effects of the pulsed ultrasound of low intensity on the flat musculature and on the epithelium endometrial in uteruses of adult female rats, after uterotomia: experimental study

Vieira, Humberto Stelita 28 February 2007 (has links)
This experimental investigation had the purpose to evaluate the low-intensity pulsed ultrasound effects under the regeneration of the myometrium and the endometrium of the rats that were submitted to uterotomia. It was used, in this experiment, twenty adult rats of the Wistar race, submitted to uterotomia beyond the longitudinal incision of total 1, 5 cm of one of the uterine horn walls. The rats were divided in two groups of ten animals each, the first group went trough fifteen daily minutes ultra-sound stimulation during ten days, and the second group, called control, went through fictional stimulation by the same time and period of the first group. Six hours before the sacrifice, the animals received, by intra muscular, 0, 10 mg of colchicine for each 100 g of body weight, with the intention to block the mitosis in metaphase. The evaluation of the tissue was based on the comparative analysis between the mitosis cell count of the stimulated animals\' endometric tissue and the control animals\' one. The morphologic findings were statistically analyzed.

Efeitos da estimulação ultra-sônica sobre a espermatogênese de ratos pré-púberes e adultos: estudo experimental / Effects of the stimulation ultrasonic about for spermatogenesis of rats prepubertal and adult: experimental study

Silva, Ruberval Farias da 02 March 2007 (has links)
This is an experimental study of the effects of low intensity pulsed ultrasound on the spermatogenesis of prepubertal and adult male rats. Forty male Wistar rats - twenty prepubertal and twenty adults -, whose testicles were stimulated for fifteen minutes for ten consecutive days were studied. Each experimental group was composed of ten prepubertal or adult animals, stimulated with low intensity pulsed ultrasound or not. Six hours before killing, the rats were given Colchicine to block the division of metaphasic cells, in order to facilitate the assessment of the spermatogenetic cycle. The area of the seminiferous tubule was done estimated by morphometry and the stages of spermatogenetic cycle were assessed, showing a significant increase of the areas of the seminiferous tubules of the stimulated animals. The spermiogenesis of prepubertal and adult rats was assessed through counts of cell associations in the stages VII and VIII and XIV, corresponding to the end and beginning of each cycle. There was a temporal increase in the spermatogenetic cycle due to a higher number of the associations with stage VIII characteristics, which means accentuated sperm cell maturity of the stimulated prepubertal rats. The testicles of the stimulated animals were weight increase regarding the of the control animals, showing a significant difference. Our results are compatible with the hypothesis that the low intensity pulsed ultrasound stimulates the increase of the testicle weight, the rats adults, and the area of the seminiferous tubules as well as accelerating the spermatogenetic cycle in rats prepubertal.

Estudo comparativo dos efeitos do ultra-som e do laser de baixa intensidade no reparo ósseo de tíbia de rato / Comparative study of ultra-sound and low intensity laser therapy effects on bone healing in rats tibia

Lirani, Ana Paula Rebucci 24 March 2004 (has links)
Many studies have assessed the effects of ultra-sound and low intensity laser therapy separatedly in bone repair. However, the comparison between these two therapeutic modalities is rare. The objective of this study was to verify and compare, through histomorphometrical analysis and a three-point bending test, the consequences of these physical agents on bone healing in animals. 48 male Wistar rats were used with tibial bone partial osteotomy, divided into 3 groups of 16. In one group, rats had their fractured limb treated with GaAIAs laser (780 nm, 30 mW, 112,5 J/square contimeter) in 12 five times-a-week sections. In another group, rats were treated with low intensity pulsed ultra-sound (1,5 MHz, 30 mW/square centimeter) in 12 five times-a-week sections too. In a third group, animals were taken as control, being submitted to the same osteotomy but receiving no treatment. After 19 days the tibias were extracted and half of them were submitted to a three-point bending test and the other half to histomorphometric analysis. During the bending test, the maximum load at failure of the tibia in the laser group was significantly higher (p<0.05). Histomorphometry showed statistical significance in osteoblasts number and surface and osteoid volume and surface for the laser group, and eroded and osteoclasts surfaces for the ultra-sound group. Ultra-sound was able to enhance bone healing (compared to control group) by speeding up the reabsorption phase, while low intensity laser therapy could accelerate this process even more by promoting mostly new bone formation 19 days after osteotomy in this experimental model

The objective of this study was to analyze and to compare metabolic and cardiorrespiratory responses durin the exercise performed at MLSS and CP in subjects with different aerobic trainning levels in cycling. Participated of this study, 7 well trained cyclists (C), specialized in road events and 9 non-trained subjects (NT), without previous training experience in cycling. Ths subjects performed the following protocols in different days in cyclergometer: 1) incremental test until exhaustion to determine anaerobic threshold (AT), maximal oxygen uptake ( O2max) and the intensity at O2max (I O2max); 2) 2 to 4 constant workload tests in different intensities to determine maximal lactate steadystate (MLSS); 3) 3 constant workload tests at 95, 100 e 110% I O2max until exhaustion to determine critical power (CP), and; 4) constant workload test until exhaustion at CP. MLSS was considered the highest exercise intensity at which the blood lactate concentration did not increase for more than 1 mM between 10th and 30th minute of the exercise. The individual values of power (95, 100 e 110% I O2max) and the respective times (tlim) were adjusted using the hyperbolic model with parameteres to determine CP. CP for C (318 ± 29W) and NT (200 ± 33W) was significantly higher than MLSS in C (288 ± 35W) and NT (169 ± 34W). MLSS and PC were significantly higher in C group. In values relative to O2max, the MLSS was significantly higher in C (83 ± 7%) than NT (79 ± 6), however CP was similar between groups (91 ± 5% and 90 ± 5%, respectively). In the same way, the oxygen uptake at CP ( O2PC) was significantly higher than at MLSS ( O2MLSS) for NT (2627 + 519 e 2323 ± 460 mL.min-1, 11%) e C (3607 ± 505 e 3953 ± 466 mL.min-1, 8%). The slow component at CP in C (375 ± 164 ml.min-1) was similar to NT (412 ± 175 ml.min-1). At this condition, the O2max was not attained (C – 93 ± 5%; NT – 96 ± 7%)...
