Ecological Interface Design for a Water Monitoring Decision Aid

Kan, Kevin 20 July 2012 (has links)
In joint human-automation systems, operators must often supervise the automation and adapt their reliance on it based on judgments of its context-specific reliability. For this to occur, operators should trust the automation appropriately. In the design of a water monitoring decision aid’s display, Ecological Interface Design was used to satisfy design guidelines for supporting appropriate trust. Design focused upon a visualization that made the aid’s use of the Dempster-Shafer theory directly perceptible. The display was evaluated using a signal detection theory-based approach that measured reliance on automation. Results indicated that the ecological display yielded less appropriate reliance and poorer performance than a conventional display for a highly reliable decision aid. However, the experimental task prevented participants from adapting to the aid’s context-specific reliabilities, reducing the validity of the findings. A subsequent study is proposed to further study the effects of ecological displays on automation reliance.

Interface Strength of Piles Embedded in Frozen Soils

Zuhao, Jin 17 September 2018 (has links)
In this study, the effect of normal stress acting on a model scale pile is determined experimentally. The minimum soil temperature was -5 degrees Celcius. Additional experiments were conducted to determine the adfreeze bond strength of an interface between the Cornwall sand and a galvanized steel plate. These tests were done using a conventional direct shear apparatus. In order to conduct interface tests under freezing temperatures, some modifications were made on the direct shear apparatus. In these experiments, three different normal stresses and three different water contents were used. The present study was extended to investigate whether there was any agreement between the adfreeze strength measured in the present study and the adfreeze strength calculated from the pull-out tests by Villeneuve (2017).

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This work aims to search the barriers to the implantation of distance education in a superior education institution, and the level of students' satisfaction on a courses in this modality. The research was carried through in an superior education institution in Distrito Federal, Brazil, using exploratory, qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative part used a half-structuralized individual interview of eighteen citizens distributed in five groups: 1) four directors of the superior education institution; 2) four coordinators; 3) two tutors of distance course; 4) four students distance courses; 5) four students of presencial courses. The quantitative part used two types of evaluation: "Reaction Evaluation of Distance Courses" and "Evaluation of Graphical Reaction". They had been answered by 251 citizens, by electronic and printed mean. The data of the qualitative part had been analyzed by the technique "Analysis of Content". The data of the quantitative part was used to descriptive and inferential statistics, factorial analyses and internal consistency. The results showed institutional and personal barriers. The students’ level of satisfaction with distance discipline was not very high, indicating that there are problems that had intervened with the course design, the work of the tutors and the performance of the students.

Java aplikace - teorie a praxe / Java applications - theory and practice

Mareček, Miroslav January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to characterize the foundational aspects of the Java programming language and the development of applications with it. As an exemplary application on which to demonstrate the findings, we will use Nand2Tetris playground, a simple education application, some of which's aspects will be analyzed within the thesis. The aim of the Nand2Tetris Playground project will be to propose and implement a graphical user interface for the first part of the Nand2Tetris computer architecture course, created by Noam Nisan, Ph.D. and Simon Schocken, Ph.D. In this part of the course, the student is tasked with assemblig all the basic boolean logic gates and several other basic parts using only NAND gates. Software for this part already exists, but can be user unfriendly, especially for a student not well versed in computer science. This is why the GUI that will be proposed and implemented will make the course more accessible even to students not very proficient in the area.
