Cross-race student-teacher relationships and the transition to kindergartenWright, Yamanda Fay 02 August 2012 (has links)
Previous research suggests that young children expect individuals who are members of the same social group (e.g., race, gender) to have warmer and closer relationships than individuals who are members of different social groups. Such an expectation may act as a barrier to academic achievement for children assigned to cross-race teachers, particularly during kindergarten. To investigate the effect of student-teacher relationships on academic achievement, kindergarten students (N = 70; 27 European American, 14 African American, 25 Latino, 4 Asian American) were assigned to a teacher who was depicted as having either warm cross-race (experimental condition) or warm same-race (control condition) relationships. The consequential effects on students’ perceptions of the their student-teacher relationship quality and school performance was examined. Results indicated that students who viewed a presentation emphasizing their teacher’s positive same-race relations, and who were paired with a same-race (but not cross-race) teacher, perceived closer, more supportive relationships with their teachers than their peers. Similarly, African American and Latino students who viewed a presentation emphasizing positive same-race relations perceived closer relations with their teachers than their European American and Asian American peers. Overall, students who viewed a presentation emphasizing positive cross-race relations showed better work habits in the classroom. Unexpectedly, the experimental manipulation was ineffective at countering children’s explicit beliefs about others’ racial biases. Potential implicit mechanisms of change in perceptions of the student-teacher relationship are discussed. / text

The Influence of Beliefs on Children's and Adults' Cognition and Social PreferencesHeiphetz, Larisa Alexandra 30 September 2013 (has links)
Beliefs--mental representations of particular propositions as true--are fundamental to social cognition. Among the most influential beliefs are ideologies, which concern the way things should be and help people understand the social structures within which they live. Ideologies occupy a unique position because they contain elements of other types of beliefs. For example, to a Biblical literalist, the belief that the earth is 4000 years old may seem fact-like. Because not everyone agrees about ideologies, however, such beliefs may seem somewhat preference-like even to their strongest adherents. To investigate the role of social experience in reasoning about ideologies, we examined children and adults. Because children have significantly less experience with ideologies, their reasoning may diverge from adults. On the other hand, if children and adults respond similarly, this would indicate that vast amounts of experience are not necessary for adult-like belief-based cognition to emerge. Part 1 showed that 5-10 year old children and adults distinguished ideological beliefs from factual beliefs(a domain in which, if two people disagree, at least one must be wrong) and preference-based beliefs(a domain in which it is acceptable for people to disagree), indicating that much experience is unnecessary for this ability to emerge. Given that even young children recognize that those who disagree with their ideological beliefs are not necessarily wrong, it is possible that children would not show strong social preferences in this domain. On the other hand, given children’s propensity toward group-based preferences in other areas, even young children may show religion-based preferences. In Part II, 6-8 year old Christian children showed implicit pro-Christian preferences regardless of the comparison target’s religion but only reported pro-Christian preferences when the two targets were very different from one another. In Part III, 6-11 year old children preferred peers who shared their religious, factual, and preference-based beliefs and selectively attributed pro-social behaviors to individuals who shared their religious views. Taken together, these findings suggest that children and adults differentiate ideologies from other types of mental states and that, despite its complexity, ideology influences social judgments even among young children. / Psychology

Etnisiteit in 'n oorgangsperiode : 'n sociaal-sielkundige studieBornman, Elirea 06 1900 (has links)
in Suid-Afrika. Op teoretiese vlak is aandag gegee aan ideologiese strominge;
staatkundige faktore verreken is. Kontekstuele faktore tydens die ondersoek wat
resultate kon be'invloed, is ook bestudeer.
gebied (Gauteng) behels.
hooffaktorontledings ondersoek. Variansie-ontledings het verskille tussen groepe
ge'identifiseer, terwyl meervoudige regressie-ontledings voorspellers van etniese
identifisering uitgelig het. Belangrike bevindings is die volgende:
* Etnisiteit was 'n belangrike bron van groepidentifisering vir sowel
swartmense as witmense.
gekorreleer.
Laer onderwyskwalifikasies het by Afrikaanssprekende witmense met sterker
etniese identifisering gekorreleer.
etniese identifisering verband gehou.
The study focuses on ethnicity during the transition to a new political dispensation
in South Africa. At the theoretical level, attention was given to ideological trends;
dimensions of ethnicity; the description of ethnicity and the distinction between
ethnicity and other forms of group identification. Ethnicity was furthermore
analyzed at the socio-psychological level, while the influence of economic, political
and constitutional factors was also considered. Contextual factors during the
investigation which could have influenced the results were also analyzed.
The empirical component comprised a questionnaire survey in the PretoriaWitwatersrand-
Vereeniging area (Gauteng). Interviews were conducted during
January and February 1994, on the eve of a new political dispensation. Randomly
selected samples were drawn of 466 blacks and 460 whites (347 Afrikaansspeaking
and 113 English-speaking). Patterns of ethnic, national and race
identification; the meaning of ethnicity for the individual; perceptions of the
situation of groups and factors that could influence ethnic identification were
covered. The construct validity and dimensions of scales were investigated by means of
main component and main factor analyses. Variance analyses identified differences
between groups, whereas multiple regression analyses were used to determine
predictors of ethnic identification. Important findings were the following:
* Ethnicity was an important source of group identification for blacks as well
as whites. A psychological dimension - ethnic identity - that related to pride in
and loyalty to the ingro11p was highlighted.
Stronger ethnic identification correlated among all groups with identity
formation; involvement with and exploration regarding the ingroup; less
ambivalent feelings about ingroup membership and an urge to protect
ingroup interests.
Stronger ethnic identification correlated among the Afrikaans-speaking
whites with a positive self-image and among the blacks with a negative selfimage.
Lower educational qualifications correlated among Afrikaans-speaking whites
with stronger ethnic identification. The opposite applied to Afrikaansspeaking
whites with higher educational qualifications.
Perceived threats were associated with stronger ethnic identification among
Afrikaans-speaking whites.
Stronger ethnic identification correlated among all groups either with
negative intergroup behaviour or with negative intergroup attitudes.
It is concluded that ethnic heterogeneity should be taken into account in all spheres
of the South African society. / Department of Psychology / D. Lit. et Phil (Psychology)

Representing between 10 and 12 million individuals in Europe, the Roma population faces discrimination and social exclusion. 40% of Europeans refuse to have Roma as their neighbors, while 70% of them do not even have direct contact with them in their lives. Based on these observations, this study analyses how attitudes towards Roma are constructed. I propose to investigate this mechanism in two similar environments, but where local integration policies towards Roma diverge, making the conditions of intergroup contact differ. The analysis is premised on two scientific assumptions: that the integration of migrants is a local public policy issue; and that intergroup contact structures attitudes between majority and minority cultures. Thus, from semi-structured interviews in the French communes of La Courneuve and Ivry-sur-Seine, I empirically test four dominant theories in the field of intergroup relations: contact theory, the halo effect, the impact of local immigrants integration policies, and media influence.
