Notions of time and epoch in contemporary French fiction : Montalbetti, Lenoir & Pireyre

Boardman, Kirsty Louise January 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines the notions of time and epoch through the works of three contemporary French authors: Christine Montalbetti, Hélène Lenoir and Emmanuelle Pireyre. The theoretical framework for this study draws upon literary criticism, time studies and cultural theory: it investigates in particular the ways in which literary fiction may respond to what has been called a ‘culture of speed' in capitalist economies of the twenty-first century. This culture of speed is traced back two major epochal shifts: the revolution in information technology, which has permitted the generating and sharing of information at exponentially higher speeds, and an increasing consciousness of the vast time cycles within which we might situate our own epoch or individual lives. This work considers the ways in which this collective and paradigmatic shift might be reflected in literary fiction. It examines the representation of new information technologies within these literary works, focusing in particular on the texts' representations of obsessive or compulsive uses of technology and the kinds of anxieties emerging as a result of the ubiquity of these devices. It further questions whether new aesthetic trends, what has been called a ‘post-internet aesthetic', may be emerging in literary fiction in light of some of these changes. Further investigation of the representation of diegetic time within these texts demonstrates that these literary works appear to resist the current time culture of speed and simultaneity, embracing instead the literary devices of repetition and digression while maintaining a dilatory pace. This study also considers the emergence of ‘short-termism' and insularity within these literary texts as reflecting a wider societal trend, especially in light of recent theoretical work on the vast timescales (for example those of the planet's climate cycles) that have become increasingly present in political and journalistic discourses.

The food of fools: an analysis of the Fools' gustatory imagery in King Lear

Unknown Date (has links)
The character of the Fool in William Shakespeare's King Lear uses hitherto unexamined gustatory imagery as a linguistic device to achieve the literary fool's function of imparting wisdom that masquerades as nonsense. While previous critics have analyzed the linguistic devices of puns, riddles, and rhymes used by medieval and Renaissance literary fools, this thesis argues not only that the Fool's gustatory imagery constitutes the dominant motif in the play, but also employs food theory to demonstrate how these image patterns provide political commentary on the dramatic action. The Fool's pattern of gustatory imagery is employed as well by characters who can be seen as variations on the wise fool. Through these characters, Shakespeare establishes a food chain motif that classifies some characters as all-consumptive, even cannibalistic, and others as their starving prey. The pattern of food imagery offers a range of perspectives, from highly critical to idealistic, on the play's meaning and political relationships. / by Sara Rafferty Sparer. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2009. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. Direito, interpretação e comunicação: clareza jurídica / Law, interpretation and comunication: clarity of law

Toledo, Maria Ângela Russo Abud de 12 August 2009 (has links)
The objective consists in the construction of a juridic clarity theory, pragmatic, with inicial steps, in opposition of a classic theory from linguistic clarity of law and from a narrow juridic clarity, in production, interpretation and decision. There is a profile of a juridic clarity, pragmatic, in opposition of a classic theory profile, from linguistic clarity of law, and from a narrow juridic clarity. It deslocates to a chiaroscuro theory in a general theory of juridic norm and its meaning construction, in a general theory of interpretation and also a decision theory. It appeals to the law technique , as a language, for a juridic semiotic, distinguishing the utilization of a semiotic on law and of a semiotic from law. The interpretative precept, in claris cessat interpretatio, redefined to interpretate clear norm and non-clear norm, becomes a regulation rule, part of a juridic norm and of the legal system. In the construction of a juridic chiaroscuro, pragmatic, the chiaroscuro is redefined as a attenuated defeat, wich lives with the clear, with its validity title, in a legal system, starting from the language statute, as constitutive of its own operation.Juridic clarity, pragmatic, exercising the role of a regulator control, in a decision theory. The chiaroscuro, juridic, pragmatic, in the quality of value, becomes a calibration rule of a legal system.
