Study of Relationships between Apparel Manufacturers' Supply Chain Management, Company Characteristics, and Inventory Performance

Lee, Yuri 05 May 2000 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine apparel manufacturers' inventory performance, which is one of the major performance indicators of supply chain management (SCM) with the consideration of company characteristics. The objectives of the study are (a) to identify the level of SCM activities of apparel manufacturers, (b) to examine the differences of apparel manufacturers' characteristics (i.e., product characteristic, production system, fabric suppliers, retail customers) according to the level of SCM activities, and (c) to illustrate how the SCM activities and apparel manufacturers' characteristics relate to the inventory management performance in terms of levels within the type (i.e., raw material, work-in-process, finished goods). Through an intensive literature review six SCM dimensions and 26 SCM activities were identified and four company characteristics selected for the study were found to influence the company performance. Inventory levels within the type were compared as a result of levels of SCM activities and company characteristics. Data were collected via a self-administered mail questionnaire sent to a random proportional stratified sample of 1,195 US apparel manufacturers in SIC 231 to 234. In the data analyses, 93 returned surveys were used with the adjusted response rate of 9.49%. Cluster analysis was used to identify the SCM activity groups who showed different levels of SCM activities. Factor analysis was used to determine the number of SCM dimensions and SCM activity scales, and to identify the SCM activity level of each cluster. ANOVA, Chi-square, Tukey-test, matched sample t-test, t-test, regression, and correlation were employed to determine the relationships between SCM activity level, company characteristics and inventory levels within the type. Statistical analyses supported the research hypotheses. Apparel manufacturers' SCM activity level differs and company characteristics are significantly related with the SCM activity level. Company characteristics and SCM activity level are significantly related with the inventory performance. Findings imply that basic goods manufacturers are more likely to see the benefits of SCM activity implementation in inventory performance. Lead-time for fashion goods procurement, production, and delivery takes longer than basic goods and is hard to be shortened. Limitations of the study and suggestions for future study were discussed. / Ph. D.

An analysis of the impact of data errors on backorder rates in the F404 engine system

Burson, Patrick A. R. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution in unlimited. / In the management of the U.S. Naval inventory, data quality is of critical importance. Errors in major inventory databases contribute to increased operational costs, reduced revenue, and loss of confidence in the reliability of the supply system. Maintaining error-free databases is not a realistic objective. Data-quality efforts must be prioritized to ensure that limited resources are allocated to achieve the maximum benefit. This thesis proposes a methodology to assist the Naval Inventory Control Point in the prioritization of its data-quality efforts. By linking data errors to Naval inventory performance metrics, statistical testing is used to identify errors that have the greatest adverse impact on inventory operations. By focusing remediation efforts on errors identified in this manner, the Navy can best use its limited resources devoted to improvement of data quality. Two inventory performance metrics are considered: Supply Material Availability (SMA), an established metric in Naval inventory management; and Backorder Persistence Metric (BPM), which is developed in the thesis. Backorder persistence measures the duration of time that the ratio of backorders to quarterly demand exceeds a threshold value. Both metrics can be used together to target remediation on reducing shortage costs and improving inventory system performance. / Lieutenant Commander, Supply Corps, United States Navy

In this sense new strategies for inventory management emerge, to minimize the impact of this factor in the results of the organizations. Literature in operations management deals with a long time to study and analyze the relationship between the stock of the economic and financial performance. But even in the face of decades of research, some issues show up unanswered. In this sense this work is to analyze the influence of the stock's performance on the economic and financial results, making use of indicators based on Gross Profit, Operating Income and Net Income, analyzing the relationship between the composition of these indicators and their effectiveness in isolating the effect of stock on economic and financial performance. For such a set of 56 industries with publicly traded and listed on the BM&FBovespa, were analyzed their data financial performance and operational arranged in the form of panel, with the start in the 1st quarter of 2004 and finish in the 4th quarter 2014 total so 11 years and 2376 observations. Regression analysis with panel data using the model of generalized least squares indicated that the economic and financial performance is positively impacted by stock, that is, reductions in inventory levels should impact in better profits for the organization. also indicated the ROABruto (Gross Profit) and BEP (Operating Income) show to be more influenced by the stock compared to indicators based on net income.
