Exploring the Relevance of Relationship Management Theory to Investor RelationsChandler, Constance 17 June 2014 (has links)
This study examines the relevance of an established public relations theory, relationship management, to investor relations. Having emerged during the 1950s, investor relations is a relatively new field that integrates the disciplines of communication, marketing, finance, and securities laws compliance. Through qualitative interviews focused on six publicly traded companies on the West Coast, the study provides insight into the relationship management function of investor relations from the perspectives of those whom investors ultimately hold accountable for a public company's performance - CEOs. The dominant theme emerging from the study is the constant challenge CEOs of public companies face as they engage in relationships with investors, primarily due to the constraining effects of regulatory requirements. While the study confirmed that the interviewees value L. C. Hon and J. E. Grunig's qualities of trust, satisfaction, control mutuality and commitment in relationships with investors, CEOs' most frequently discussed relationship quality that they work to achieve is trust.

Essays on the effects of gains and losses on the trading behavior of individual investors in the Finnish stock marketLehenkari, M. (Mirjam) 03 March 2009 (has links)
Abstract
The behavior of investors is often at odds with the assumptions of traditional finance theory. Research conducted over the past half-century or so abounds with examples in which the central axioms of traditional theory are systematically violated. One of the most well-established behavioral patterns in this context is the disproportionate tendency of investors to sell stocks that have appreciated in value since purchase (‘winners’) rather than stocks that have declined in value (‘losers’); this phenomenon is known as the disposition effect and most commonly attributed to Kahneman and Tversky’s (1979) prospect theory. The overall aim of this doctoral thesis is to investigate the robustness of this phenomenon, its underlying mechanisms, and its potential implications for individual investors.
The four independent but related essays of this thesis were designed to answer the following research questions: (1) Does the disposition effect ‘survive’ bear markets, in which investors may not be able to realize gains even if they wish to do so? (2) Is there any supporting evidence for prospect theory-based explanation of the disposition effect in the form of other observed behavior consistent with the theory? (3) Is prospect theory the most feasible explanation for the disposition effect? (4) What are the implications of the disposition effect from the point of view of individual investors?
Using comprehensive data covering virtually all trades executed in the Finnish stock market during 1995–2003, this thesis demonstrates the following: (1) As robust as the disposition effect appears to be in light of previous studies, the phenomenon is only partially detected in bear markets. (2) The relationship between prospect theoretic preferences and investor behavior is not easily generalizable to other behavioral patterns besides the disposition effect. (3) In fact, even the relationship between prospect theory and the disposition effect is not as strong as is generally believed. Our results instead suggest an explanation based on escalation of commitment, according to which the disposition effect is caused above all by self-justificatory concerns. (4) Finally, although the disposition effect is generally inconsistent with economic rationality, it does not appear to be detrimental to investment performance.

The role of social media in enhancing investor relations in South AfricaLujiza, Babalwa 15 July 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this research has been to understand the profession and discipline of investor relations in publicly listed entities in South Africa, and their response to the opportunities and threats of using social media as another channel of communication. These responses include the rationale, and strategies pursued and practised in order to enhance investor relations. To gain an understanding of whether the investor relations practitioners see the role of social media to enhance their programmes, a qualitative research with an exploratory design was conducted on thirteen organisations listed on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange main board with a market capitalisation amount exceeding R4.5 billion per annum. It was discovered that investor relations was formalised in the form of strategies formulated and the internal and JSE-regulated practices performed suggest that they take pursuit of investor relations seriously. Furthermore, despite the widespread usage or social media for customer engagement purpose, investor relations practitioners do not yet regard social media as a tool that could supplement disclosure requirements as well provide non financial information about companies. This purpose is currently being served by the dedicated investor relations websites only. Based on findings made, investor willingness will also drive the use of social media. Some of the recommendations made include engaging the JSE for the endorsement of social media, implementation of maturity models and engaging investors on their information needs when making investment decisions. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted

The Real Effects of Shareholder Proposals: Purpose in the Context of Climate ChangeUnknown Date (has links)
Extant literature has struggled to identify definitive purpose for shareholder proposals, finding them to depend on their context. Progressively, climate change has gathered interest at annual meetings where shareholders present proposals related to the subject. The literature builds expectations for the role of obsolescence, regulation and other forms of activism to motivate innovation with respect to these proposals. The literature also establishes how diversification can serve as a defense. I test the impact that shareholder proposals have on the information environment and on the corporate behaviors of innovation and diversification. I find that capital markets are responsive to proposal pressures and that there are improvements in the information environment. I find that firms in receipt of shareholder proposals related to climate change innovate and diversify more. I find wealth enhancements for these corporate behaviors spurred by climate-related proposals. While definitive statements on causality may elude, my results suggest that shareholder proposals have real effects. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2020. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

The role of law in the successful completion of public-private partnership projects in Nigeria: lessons from South AfricaArimoro, Augustine Edobor 07 May 2019 (has links)
Over the years, shortage of funds has resulted in a huge deficit in government budgets for infrastructure, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Due to the huge costs involved in infrastructure procurement in relation to other competing demands on government spending, it is no longer feasible for governments to bear the entire burden of infrastructural development. This is especially the case in Nigeria, where annual infrastructure deficit is estimated at a massive $8 billion. Moreover, public officials have demonstrated incompetence in making public corporations profitable. Accordingly, Nigeria has adopted the public-private partnership model of infrastructure procurement to allow for the participation of the private sector in the design, funding, construction, management, and operation of public infrastructure. However, Nigeria’s legal framework for managing public-private partnership is not clearly defined, leading to gaps in policy and overlapping laws that make implementation of PPP very difficult. Unsurprisingly, public-private partnership in Nigeria have, thus far, produced mixed results, thereby raising a need for clear policy guidelines on streamlining overlapping laws to attract, sustain and reward investor interest. In what ways do Nigeria’s legal and policy framework for public-private partnership protect private investors’ funds? This study examines the concept of PPP and its practice in Nigeria, arguing that the regulatory framework be designed or enhanced to protect investors’ assets in public-private partnership projects and ensure they achieve proportional return on investments. Beyond the problem of overlapping laws, the study finds that political interference, weak institutional mechanisms and poor respect for the rule of law and sanctity of contract underlie the ineffectiveness of public-private partnership in Nigeria. Drawing from the public-private partnership experience in South Africa, it recommends holistic strategies for protecting investors’ assets and unlocking the local financial market for sourcing project funding. These strategies are notably the provision of guarantees, making the process less cumbersome, provision of incentives for investors and project companies and ensuring that the host community for public-private partnership projects are involved in the process from inception to operation to get their support.
