In this context our objective was to verify the role of natural selection in the distribution of populations diversity in Handroanthus serratifolius and Tabebuia aurea. Here, we study population genomics based in sequence capture using 24,751 pre-developed probes. For H serratifolius were sampled c. 64,000 SNPs in 144 individuals from 16 populations. For T aurea were sampled c. 18,000 SNPs in 48 individuals from 6 populations. Genetic differentiation was high (FST = 0.194, p <0.001) in H. serratifolius and intermediate (FST = 0.144, p <0.001) in T. aurea. The inbreeding coefficient was low in both species, however, in three populations of H. serratifolius it was intermediate or high. The genetic structure of populations presented two genetic groups for the populations sampled in the two species. H. serratifolius with high genetic differentiation and T. aurea with admixture in all populations. We did not find SNPs outliers in the distribution of FST values, due to the wide distribution of values found for the populations of the two species. In the search for correlation between environmental variables and changes in allelic frequency H. serratifolius presented only three SNPs, inside six genes and T. aurea presented 16 SNPs, inside 25 genes. The functional annotation of these genes showed relationship with molecular processes, transposable elements and one in T. aurea related to resistance to diseases. In conclusion, our data show a selection signal in H. serratifolius for only three loci with local adaptation signal. In T. aurea our data show a greater number of locos (16 locos) with local adaptation signal.

"We face neither East nor West; We face forward" : A study about policy implementation to receive Chinese Foreign Direct Investments in Ghana

Hansson, Ida, Osbakk Malmström, Emma January 2019 (has links)
This Bachelor thesis focuses on examining the Ghanaian state's policies regarding inward Foreign Direct Investments and furthermore the policy implementation to attract and receive FDI, the question asked is What policy choices have been implemented by Ghana to attract Chinese FDI? This thesis employs a single case study design with a qualitative approach as it seeks to draw upon Liberal IPE and RAM to understand the policy choices in attracting FDI, more specifically how Ghana has shaped their policies. When conducting the analysis, the thesis assembles documents, both primary and secondary data to be able to answer the research question. The documents used for gathering data is from Ghana's government as well as governmental organisations, governmental policies and official statistics to peer reviewed articles and organisational data. This enables the thesis to find empirical evidence to support the aims of the conducted research. Moreover, secondary data will be used to situate, contextualize and present the findings. The main problem seen is how the policy behaviour of governments is conducted to receive FDI in this trudge. The solution to the problem is presented to be the policy decision taken to open markets and welcoming Foreign Direct Investment, through reforms aimed at both domestic companies and market as well as to the global markets and actors.

Person and professional program determinants of health provider student attitudes toward inter-professional teamwork

Kerry, Matthew James 06 August 2012 (has links)
Health provider student characteristics and professional program were evaluated as predictors of attitudes toward inter-professional (IP) teams. Sixteen months after completing a self-report battery of demographic and non-ability trait measures, participants completed a second survey (N = 213), assessing components of attitudes toward IP teams. Non-ability traits showed comparable within-program predictive validities for affective reactions toward IP behavior. Additionally, results indicated the incremental predictive validity of trait Dominance and Motivational Inter-professional Team Intelligence, over professional program, for IP attitudes and affective reactions toward IP behavior, respectively. The independent, relative, and joint roles of non-ability individual differences and professional program as determinants of IP training outcomes are discussed.

MICROPROPAGAÇÃO E ANALISE DA ANATOMIA FOLIAR DE Handroanthus chrysotrichus (Mart. ex DC.) J. Mattos / Handroanthus chrysotrichus (Mart. ex DC.) J. Mattos MICROPROPAGATION AND LEAF ANATOMY ANALYSIS

Paim, Aline Ferreira 25 July 2014 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Handroanthus chrysotrichus is a Brazilian native forest species which presents several important aspects both under the economic and ecological points of view, because its ability to provide timber products as well as for being indicated for degraded and permanent preservation areas recovery. Its seeds present problems concerning loss of viability when subjected to storage. This way, micropropagation emerges as an alternative for the species propagation. However, some characteristics inherent in in vitro grown plants may promote physiological and anatomic changes in tissues under that condition. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate aspects related to micropropagation and leaf anatomy of H. chrysotrichus. Firstly, health and germination tests were applied to seeds from different lots of that species. As for in vitro multiplication of H. chrysotrichus explants, different sources and concentrations of cytokines combined or not with auxin were tested, as well as the influence of successive subculture execution on multiplication rates. Aspects concerning leaf senescence of sprouts maintained in vitro in Woody Plant Medium (WPM) were also assessed. Concerning rooting in vitro, different concentrations of 3-Indolebutyric acid (IBA) combined with the presence or absence of vermiculite in ½ WPM were tested and, later, the ex vitro acclimatization of plants micropropagated was assessed. Finally, the test was conducted in order to compare the leaf anatomy of H. chrysotrichus plants grown in vivo, in vitro and acclimatized. The seed lots of H. chrysotrichus showed differences in health quality and geminal capacity of the seeds. As for in vitro multiplication of H. chrysotrichus, the use of cytokinins was not considered necessary. High rates of in vitro multiplication were obtained, when considered in vitro formation of buds. As for leaf senescence, the species showed great potential, remaining long periods in the same nutrient medium. There was rooting in vitro in more than 50% of the shoots cultivated in the presence of vermiculite, regardless IBA concentration. It was not possible to satisfactorily promote the acclimatization of micropropagated plants, as only 7.12% of the seedlings survived. Differences in leaf anatomy of plants grown in vivo, in vitro or acclimatized were verified. The results can contribute with information about H. chrysotrichus, concerning aspects related to its in vitro culture and leaf anatomy of the tissues grown in different environments.

The Dollar Hegemony And The U.S.-china Monetary Disputes

Cao, Xiongwei 01 January 2012 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the current disputes between the United States and China over the exchange rate of the Chinese currency renminbi using an International Political Economy (IPE) analysis. Monetary relations are not mere economic affairs, but bear geopolitical implications. Money is power. Money is politics. The pursuit of monetary power is an important part of great power politics. Based on this assertion, the thesis studies past cases of monetary power struggles between the United States and the Great Britain, the Soviet Union, Japan, and the European Union (EU), respectively. The thesis then investigates the dollar’s status as the dominant international reserve currency in the current international monetary system, as well as the power that this unique status can generate and provide. The dollar’s monetary hegemony has become the main characteristic of the current international monetary system and an important power source for continued U.S. hegemony. The dollar’s hegemony and the asymmetrical interdependency between the dollar and the renminbi are the source and the key basis for the recent U.S.-China monetary disagreements. The U.S.-China monetary disputes reflect not only each country's respective domestic interests and perceived benefits, but also the monetary power struggle between the two biggest global economies. Predictions are also entertained for the future monetary relations between the two countries, as well as the geopolitical implications that this relationship may have for the U.S.-China bilateral relationship in coming decades.

Transforming inter-professional dental care: assessment of non-dental healthcare workers' knowledge and attitudes towards children's oral health

Redwan, Alaa Kamil H. 29 July 2020 (has links)
INTRODUCTION: Children’s Oral Health (OH) is a vital part of their general health. Since many OH problems begin during early childhood, prevention of these problems can be achieved through early and routine preventive dental care. The dental community alone cannot adequately address all oral health care needs. The establishment of an interprofessional oral health primary care workforce team can help provide holistic health care services that can improve children’s OH, particularly among under-served populations. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to assess the effect of Interprofessional Education (IPE) on the level of OH knowledge among pediatricians, nurses, speech-language pathologists, nutritionists, and social workers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaires assessing participants’ oral-health knowledge were collected from pediatricians, nurses, speech-language pathologists, nutritionists and social workers who are working or studying in Boston, Massachusetts. Pre-test questionnaires were used to evaluate baseline oral-health knowledge and attitude towards IPE. Post-test survey immediately after the IPE training and a follow-up survey after 6-12 months were used to evaluate immediate and long-term retention of knowledge. Pre-, post- and follow-up scores were assigned based on the participants’ responses. Univariate parametric analysis methods such as T-test and non-parametric tests such as Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests were used to assess retention of knowledge and attitude towards IPE. Fisher’s Exact test was used to evaluate differences in the number of high scores. Multiple linear regression models were used to adjust for potential confounders. Statistical significance was reported when p-value <0.05. RESULTS: Among the 557 participants, the immediate post-test scores showed significant improvement when compared to the baseline knowledge scores across different professions (p<0.01). The long-term follow-up scores was lower than the immediate post-test scores (statistical significance was not detected across all professions), however, still significantly higher when compared to the pre-test scores (p<0.01). Among all the participants, the attitude towards collaboration was high (100%). CONCLUSION: Our results highlight the need for collaboration between dental and non-dental healthcare workforce by incorporating IPE into existing curriculum to enhance the retention of knowledge and increase collaboration after graduation. Continuing education programs can significantly contribute towards long-term retention of knowledge. / 2022-07-29T00:00:00Z

Τζουμανίκα, Γεωργία 12 March 2014 (has links)
In this project, a parametric design of steel moment resisting frames with square hollow section type columns (Square Hollow Section, SHS) and double tee type of section (IPE) beams was made. It was desired to develop an equation connecting the inelastic response characteristics of structures designed according to the force-based method but having as initial target a desired performance level in accordance with seismic design based on the direct displacement-design method. Furthermore, it was desired to estimate the influence of P-Δ phenomena to the inelastic response of 2D moment resisting steel frames in a more correct way. The influence of stability control in the design moment resisting steel frames is highlighted. Various parameters that affect the elastic and inelastic response of structures are used, such as the yield strength of steel members fy, the number of storeys ns, which directly affects the eigenperiod of the system, the type of the elastic response of the structures, which are divided into flexural and shear type according to the coefficient ρ as defined by Chopra (2007a), and also the parameter of plastic moments α associated with the type of the developing plastic mechanism. The hysteretic law used, which describes the inelastic response of members under cyclic action, is the bilinear hysteretic law with hardening 3% and deterioration of members’ strength directly associated with the local ductility of members in each inelastic loading cycle. In addition, extra parametric analyses were made by using bilinear hysteretic law with 3% hardening without deterioration of strength of members in their inelastic response, in order to investigate the influence of strength deterioration on the resistance for members in the inelastic range. To carry out this study, 57 records of past earthquakes far from the seismic fault were used to perform the dynamic non - linear analyses, in order to take into account the influence of the frequency content of the accelerograms on the response of the systems. Finally, examples are presented comparing the proposed method with the method of forces demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Midwifery knowledge and the medical student experience : an exploration of the concept of midwifery knowledge and its use in medical students' construction of knowledge during a specialist obstetric rotation

MacVane, Fiona Ellen January 2010 (has links)
The literature concerning what medical students learn from midwives during specialist obstetric rotations is scarce. In the UK, despite a long tradition of providing midwifery attachments for medical students, it is almost non-existent. Working with midwives is arguably the only opportunity medical students have to experience holistic or social models of maternity care, focusing on normality rather than on the medical concept of risk. This study sought to discover how medical students constructed their knowledge about childbirth during a six week specialist rotation in obstetrics in a Northern English teaching hospital (NETH), with particular emphasis on whether participants assimilated any concepts from midwifery knowledge (MK). A Delphi Study, done as the first phase of the research, focused on MK, utilizing an international sample of experienced midwives. Resulting themes were used to develop the data collection tool for the second phase of the research. The research employed a qualitative case study method with students from a single year cohort comprising the case. Data were collected using a tool consisting of three problem based learning (PBL) scenarios. These were presented to the students in consecutive interviews at the beginning, the middle and the end of their obstetric rotation. Following analysis, five main themes were identified which illuminated the medical students' construction of knowledge about maternity care. These were explored and discussed. The thesis concludes with recommendations for increasing opportunities for IPE in the medical and midwifery curricula.
