Glimpsing the balance between earth and sky: a meeting ground for postmodernism and Christianity in four selected novels by Jeanette Winterson and John IrvingEdwards, Ross Stephen January 1999 (has links)
The phrase “glimpsing the balance between earth and sky” in the thesis title is taken from Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. In this novel, the central character Jeanette believes she has glimpsed the possibility that human relationships can find their mirror in the relationship with God, as she understands the divine Other. This glimpse has set her wandering, trying to find such a balance. This examination of four selected novels by Jeanette Winterson and John Irving shows that for Irving, “glimpsing the balance” means in part, giving voice to a strongly “Christian” view of humankind and human nature but in an age where the prevailing intellectual worldview is strongly sceptical of any Grand Narrative. The “voice” expressed in Irving’s work has to be situated, like Winterson’s, as one among many possibilities. Irving’s voice is itself masked as different, other/Other, freakish, in the narrative worlds he creates. Through his use of grotesque comedy as a vehicle for deeper philosophical concerns, Irving asks us: What after all in the postmodern world is the main show? This thesis argues that if Winterson and Irving are testing or re-presenting a Christian worldview in a postmodern context, than they are asking whether Christianity is capable of assimilating and rising above the worst circumstances the world, writer, and life can throw at it. In Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Winterson tells a story of “forbidden love”, posed as a direct challenge to the prevailing way of knowing in her character’s community. In Gut Symmetries, she expands this challenge by employing the insights of quantum physics to make sense of the complexities raised by a triangular love relationship. Irving offers the story of Owen in A Prayer for Owen Meany as the kind of story which might possibly make a believer out of him; in short, that he would have to be a witness to some kind of miracle, something utterly inexplicable. In A Son of the Circus Irving narrates the quest for identity undertaken by an Indian doctor who is in every way a Displaced Person – the condition, he implies, of anyone who purports to find their piece of the truth. The theoretical concerns of the postmodern project are examined through Lawrence Cahoone’s argument that postmodern writing offers criticism of: presence, origin, unity and transcendence through an analytical strategy of constitutive otherness. In each of their texts, Irving and Winterson are seen to use these four critical elements and to offer a postmodern strategy of re-presenting meaning through “constitutive otherness”. Both writers also employ a strategy of historiographic metafiction (as defined by Linda Hutcheon) as a means of constructing and re-presenting their narrated stories. Postmodern paradox is compatible with what could be called a Christian plan for living, if the latter is in turn given an appropriate 1990s interpretation. The selected novels by Winterson and Irving are offered as contemporary evidence for this view. This thesis argues that the connection between postmodernism and other worldviews, particularly Christianity, is found in both projects’ process of making meanings through encounters with an other/Other.

This dissertation is a scholarly edition of the
correspondence between the Canadian poet Irving Layton and
the critic and historian of Canadian literature, Desmond
Pacey; on November 3, 1954, Desmond Pacey wrote to Contact
Press, inviting the poets Irving Layton, Louis Dudek and
Raymond Souster to submit their recent work for discussion
in an article on Canadian literature for The International
Year Book. Pacey and Layton met in Montreal a few months
later, and so began a long friendship and a lengthy
correspondence which continued until Pacey’s death on July
4, 1975. The correspondence is an extremely important
document in the history of Canadian poetry and criticism in
the decisive decades following World War II because it so
directly and extensively explores the crucial issues of the
times: the function of the poet and the critic in
contemporary society; the debate over a “cosmopolitan”
versus a “native” aesthetic; the debate over a “mythopoeic”
versus a “realist” approach to the creation of, and
criticism of, poetry; and the attempt to define a position
for the Jewish writer in a gentile society. But aside from
this prolonged and invaluable theoretical discourse, and
aside from the countless useful insights into the life and
work of practically every writer active in Canada between
1954-1975, the letters between the two men are important because the two men were so vitally important to the
development of a viable Canadian literature.
The basic principle of this project’s editorial
philosophy is the decision to abjure the “editorial
pedantries” of the diplomatic text which tend to exclude
the non—specialist educated public, and to assume greater
flexibility in the standardization and regularization of
spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviation and
matters of format——placement of addresses, closings,
postscripts and marginalia. Headnotes contain all textual
information about the letter; transcriptions are in the main
literal, but in the interest of consistency some
standardization has been imposed. Footnotes follow each
letter; cross—references are by letter and, where
applicable, note number; when the reference is to a letter
with a single footnote, no number is cited. These almost
three thousand annotations are employed to identify
individuals referred to in the text, to provide publication
information on the works of Layton, Pacey, and numerous
other individuals referred to in the text, to document and
frequently quote from the reviews, articles, radio and
television programs they discuss, to elucidate references to
current events, and to provide miscellaneous but necessary
background information on matters ranging from the private
lives of the two correspondents to majcir vnts and isuë

As representatives of "an earlier stage of civilization," Native Americans in early nineteenth-century literature were integral in conversations of race relations, cultural development, and anthropological strata. They were a baseline of humanity against which more "civilized" nations of the world marked their progress, determined the value of their own cultural advancements, and proclaimed their superiority (Flint 1). They were an object of continuing fascination for Americans and Britons seeking to reinvent themselves in the aftermath of war and revolution, but their image in these nations was used as a derogatory slur (Fulford and Hutchings 1; Flint 6--7). Suggesting that a nation had a kinship with Native Americans was becoming an unfortunately familiar shortcut to suggest disgraceful backsliding into primitive ways. Rather than view Native Americans as markers of social degeneracy, barbarism, or ignorance, Washington Irving argues in his works that these figures could be revived as a positive connecting force for Americans and Britons. He recalls a more dignified Romantic image of the "noble savage" "intelligent, loyal, and proud" to overcome vengeful memories of war and violence. The Indian characters in A History of New York and The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon are more than idle entertainments or broad caricatures; they are carefully crafted Romantic figures that embody the restorative, unifying ideals for which both Americans and Britons yearned in the aftermath of war. Irving uses Knickerbocker's History to reflect the capriciousness of public memory and the sometimes dangerous power of the biased storyteller. He exposes how the Native American legend became tainted by historians who tried to justify the ill-treatment these people received at the hands of the Europeans. In Crayon's Sketchbook, Irving continues to explore the mutability of history by showing how nations like Britain had been successful in inventing a heritage that drew their people together. Finally, in "Traits of Indian Character" and "Philip of Pokanoket," Irving fulfills the promise of the History by restoring the Romantic Indian to a position of respect and power in the American and British memory. Though Irving's writing doesn't attempt to correct the image of Native Americans enough to get at the real people behind the image society invented, he embraces the malleability of these important cultural figures to make observations on how we create and perceive history and align ourselves to the invented past. By re-examining these works through their romantic and historic intent in a transatlantic relationship, we can come to better understand Irving's position as he supported his American nationhood and sentimental British roots with a figure that resonated on both sides.

The literature on analogical reasoning has established several main points of consensus, or rules about how the process works and what behaviors it produces. The first rule is that the process is employed almost universally. Second, its utilization is extremely prominent in novel situations, such as foreign policy decisions. These rules being established, it must be inferred that almost all foreign policy makers utilize analogical reasoning to some extent when faced with a unique situation. Another rule established is that once a person has defined a situation in terms of the analogy and developed an appropriate policy, he/she will rarely change his/her opinion. However, it has been well established by the groupthink theory that, when placed in a group setting, individuals can be dissuaded from their original assessments of the necessary responses to a situation. Thus it must be inferred that group processes, at least the groupthink syndrome, and analogical reasoning interact. Consequently, in order to fully understand a policy failure, which has been credited to groupthink, it is necessary to examine what cognitive processes led to both the original formulation and the adoption of the policy. Exactly how these processes interact remains unstudied. Although the literature reviewed in this study is not comprehensive on either subject, it covers the more authoritative and critically reviewed literature. Also, extensive efforts to find a similar argument to the one presented here offered few results. This implies that the correlation, if any, remains relatively understudied. Therefore, there is a need for the work at hand, in order to further understand how these prevalent cognitive processes have affected foreign policy decisions and the implications for the future.

At the height of her career, Norma Shearer was the Queen of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and the First Lady of the silver screen. She starred in sixty films in twenty-three years, beginning her career as an extra in 1919 before dominating the box office in the 1930s and retiring in 1942. Shearer's husband was the ''Boy Wonder” producer, Irving Thalberg, the man responsible for overseeing many of the studio's greatest successes, although he preferred to remain uncredited for his work. When Shearer and Thalberg married in September 1927, they became Hollywood's golden couple. Throughout their nine-year marriage, rumors circulated that Shearer married Thalberg for the sake of her career, while Thalberg was accused of unfairly casting Shearer in key film roles for which other stars may have been better suited. In interviews that appeared in screen magazines, Shearer denied the validity of this gossip, and sources close to the couple often reported their marriage was full of love and happiness. Although Thalberg did not publicly deny any rumors, he assured bis colleagues that his casting choices did not result from favoritism. Shearer and Thalberg had great influence and power within the film industry, but studio executives felt they both held too much power-especially Thalberg. Using archival research from Los Angeles, California, and information collected from within the state of Florida, this thesis explores the rumors that circulated about Norma Shearer and Irving Thalberg and the couple's methods to reveal the truth. It provides the personal histories of both artists and an examination of the circumstances surrounding one of early Hollywood's most powerful couples. It was their success that brought about the rumors and the attempts to undermine their marriage.

In search of the romantic Christ : the origins of Edward Irving's theology of incarnationTucker, Nicholas John Cuthbert January 2018 (has links)
This thesis reassesses the evidence surrounding Edward Irving’s controversial teaching about the doctrine of the incarnation. Irving was a controversial figure in his own day and his legacy has been contested ever since he was dismissed from the ministry of the Church of Scotland for teaching that Christ had a ‘fallen’ human nature. This thesis re-examines the emergence and significance of Irving’s teaching. It evaluates the scholarly consensus that his distinctive Christology was a stable feature of his thought and argues the case that his thinking in this area did change significantly. Methodologically, this thesis draws on some aspects of Quentin Skinner’s work in the importance of context (Chapter Two) to understand Irving as he really was, rather than in terms of his later significance. In the light of this, Irving’s biography is examined in Chapter Three, before moving into a discussion of the influential part played by Samuel Taylor Coleridge in Irving’s intellectual development (Chapter Four). The second half of the thesis then moves on to consider the development of Irving’s Christology and the questions surrounding its provenance and development (Chapters Five and Six). Finally, in Chapter Seven, possible sources of explanation for Irving’s distinctive ideas about the Incarnation are exhibited and assessed. The argument of this thesis is that Edward Irving developed an account of the Incarnation that was essentially novel, in response to the Romantic ideas that he had derived from Coleridge. In accordance with Coleridge’s assessment, it is argued that this derivation was rendered more complex by Irving’s incomplete apprehension of Coleridge’s underlying philosophy. Nonetheless, it is argued that Edward Irving’s teaching presented a Romantic version of Christ, and that this distinctive conception owes more to the times in which Irving lived than to the theological tradition to which he claimed adherence.
