Islaam as a world religion is most often associated with terrorism and numerous bombings and conflicts around the globe. While, Islaam does not encourage these actions there exists movements within the Muslim community which use violence as a means of political expression similar to the early extremist Khawaarij sect who abused the concept of takfeer. Many modern day ideologues seem to adopt the main tenets of the Khawaarij creed and as a result exhort and carrying out actions of violence under the guise of Islaam. In addition, Western media, secularists, and United States policy also appears to have a direct role in fostering the growth of these movements. Therefore, there is a need for further study into the ideological roots of these groups, their actions, and how societies can look for solutions to combat their ideals before they evolve into terrorist actions. / Religious Studies and Arabic / M. The Philosophers such as ibn-Sina had maintained that time and space were co-eternal with Allah, emanating by necessity from His Attributes, and not being the results of a deliberate act of creation. This must be the case, for otherwise nothing would have been present to induce Him to create the world after a period of non-existence.
Al-Ghazali's refutation of this is that Allah had decreed in pre-eternity that the world would materialize at a future, predetermined date, selecting an instance for its birth from a myriad like-instances by exercising His Free Will and manifesting therewith a cause with a delayed effect. The Philosophers' explanation of local phenomena as resulting from the perpetual motion of the spheres is flawed, since perpetual celestial motions would result in perpetual, not transient phenomena.

The label Salafee-Jihaadee has been used to categorize Islamic groups that
espouse violence against the West and Muslim regimes. The typology of Salafee-
Jihaadee is met with vehement disapproval and criticism from adherents to
Salafism. For this reason, the portrayal of Salafees as violent extremists requires
scrutiny.
This study aims to make a unique contribution to knowledge of Salafism by
surveying an extensive literature review, supplemented by interviews of known
Salafee clerics based upon the premise that Salafism is an antidote to Islamic
extremism rather than a cause of violent jihaad and terror.
Furthermore, this research aims to offer new insight into existing literature and
theory regarding Salafism. By re-examining current theory this research attempts to
show that Salafism is an antidote to violent extremism. Therefore, there is a clear
need to explore the relationship between Salafism, violent extremism, and
takfeerism.
In chapter one Salafism is defined and its key features as a movement are
characterized and evaluated. Chapter two analyzes Salafees’ view and role in
denouncing violence and extremism. Chapter three introduces alternative
assessments of Salafism as a movement and evaluates the arguments put forth by
its critics. Chapter four investigates Salafist perceptions of pluralism particularly in
Western non-Muslim societies. Chapter five details the role of Salafees and their
counter arguments to extremism. The final chapter details the conclusions of the
research, which indicate that Salafism is not a precursor to violence, but rather the
efforts of Salafee scholars offer effective counter-narratives to the jihaadeetakfeeree

Philanthropic zakat for empowering Indonesia's poor : a qualitative study of recipient experiences at Rumah ZakatLessy, Zulkipli 25 February 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Existing zakat research reports little information about the living conditions of Indonesian zakat recipients. This study examined the perceptions of zakat recipients at Rumah Zakat, a charitable institution, in Yogyakarta. Semi-structured interviews solicited seven economic empowerment and seven socio-health program respondents’ narratives. This data collection method incorporating multiple approaches to data analysis, including phenomenology, revealed that economic empowerment respondents with more education and spousal support could better subsist after utilizing Rumah Zakat’s interest-free loans. And, compared to individual efforts or group support, spousal support helped significantly with business growth. These respondents typically earned incomes above the national standard of poverty. As their businesses grew, four respondents planned to employ the jobless. In the socio-health program, respondents had minimal education and incomes that fell below the national standard of poverty. A Rumah Zakat clinic gave these respondents four to five years of free health care services; it also facilitated collaborative learning. Although the services lowered their expenses, three respondents requested food distribution in addition to health care. Respondents benefiting from both programs reported a significant positive impact on their home economies, health, and social lives. Thus, an integrative program offering assistance with micro-credits, health care, food security, and education would better serve the poor.
