Jens Jensen and the Racine, Wisconsin parks

Slattery, Christina January 1994 (has links)
Jens Jensen was a prominent landscape architect whose designs emphasized the unique landscape features of the Midwest. As a strong advocate of conservation, Jensen used native plant materials and forms to express the vanishing Midwestern landscape. Jensen was a true artist and is most often recognized as the master of this uniquely Midwestern style. In 1905 he was employed by the city of Racine to design a system of parks. Racine's mayor had recently appointed a Park Board to consider the future recreational needs of the city and citizens, which at the time had only Mound Cemetery as a place to spend Sundays and holidays. From 1906 to 1914, Jensen completed plans for an entire park system for Racine, including specific plans for four parks, a bathing beach and Monument Square. The natural resources of the city were suited to Jensen's prairie style, and he emphasized the conservation and utilization of the Root River, shoreline of Lake Michigan, woods and meadows strongly in his work. The designs are unque because they successfully integrated recreational facilities into the aesthetic setting of a park. This paper will address the history, development and design of the Racine parks, emphasizing their local and national significance as surviving examples of Jens Jensen's philosophies and Midwestern style. / Department of Architecture

The methods of evapotranspiration estimation compared were: Jensen-Haise, Ivanov, Linacre, Hargreaves-Samani and Makkink. The analyzed data came from the automatic weather station belonging to the Unidade de Ensino e Pesquisa (Teaching and Research Unit) of the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Ceará - Campus Limoeiro do Norte, Ceará, comprising the period (in 2007) from January 1st to December. The analysis was based on daily data, monthly data and by ten-day interval data using regression analysis and evaluating the Hoppinks (2002) correlation coefficient, the Willmott (et al., 1985) indexes and the Sentelhas and Campbell (1997) performance index . The results demonstrated that the method of Ivanov gave the best performance in the daily schedule, that in the ten-day schedule the methods of Ivanov and Hargreaves-Samani showed the best performance, and that in the monthly schedule, the methods of Linacre, Hargreaves-Samani and Ivanov showed the best performance. Despite the good performance of the Ivanov method with all three time schedules, we would advise the use of the Hargreaves-Samani method, in ten-day and monthly schedules, due to its greater ease of data collection and practicality in the calculation of reference evapotranspiration.

Investigating Wind Data and Configuration of Wind Turbines for a Turning Floating Platform

Sönmez, Nurcan January 2014 (has links)
Wake interactions on a floating platform for offshore wind energy applications were investigated. The study is performed in collaboration with Hexicon AB which has a patent family for innovative floating platforms, which are able to turn automatically. The Jensen model is used for wake effect calculations and the simulations were performed in MATLAB. The present study starts with wind speed and wind direction data analysis for the specific site that Hexicon AB plans to construct its first platform. Data analysis is followed by wake interaction studies for H4-24MW type Hexicon AB platform. Wake interaction simulations were performed for three different cases. Fixed turbine and platform, Nacelle yawing and fixed platform and Nacelle yawing and turned platform. Different cases were investigated in order to see wake interactions for different wind directions. Wind direction effect on wake interactions were performed between _90_ and 90_ with an increment of 10_. After having the simulation results for Nacelle yawing and turned platform case the results were compared with ANSYS - CFX simulations results. The results didn’t match exactly but they were very close, which is an indicator to the validity of the Jensen Model. After finding out the possible behavior of wake interactions for different wind directions, power calculations were performed for the same three cases. In order to perform the power calculations the wake interactions for different wind directions were taken into account. In case of platform turning it was assumed that power losses were caused both by wake interactions and in case of thrusters activation. The losses that would be caused by different thrust forces on the turbine blades were not included. The last study was performed to suggest different layouts. In the second case, Nacelle yawing and fixed platform, it was found out that nacelle yawing for most of the angles is not possible because it creates wake regions in front of the rotor area. It was decided to propose new turbine configurations on the platform which are tolerant to different nacelle yawing angles. The simulations were run without considering any constructions limitations, meaning that the availability of platform structure was not included. The study is ended by performing some probabilistic results for platform turning behavior.
