The Canticle of the Black Madonna is an original opera-oratorio in two acts, comprising 27 pieces for six operatic soloists, mixed chorus, and chamber orchestra. It is based on an original libretto by Tiziana DellaRovere and is approximately two hours in duration. The Canticle of the Black Madonna combines elements of numerous musical traditions—including medieval organum, baroque oratorio, and both classical and contemporary chamber opera—to tell the story of a fictional American soldier returning from Afghanistan to his wife in Louisiana, the challenges they face to their marriage and livelihood as they struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder, the ecological and socioeconomic consequences of the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill, and the healing transformation they ultimately undergo at the hands of a mysterious divine figure called The Black Madonna.

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the relationship between personality type and leadership focus. Personality type is studied from the perspective of Jungian Theory and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator instrument, and leadership focus is explored through the development and application of a Leadership Focus Questionnaire. South African executives form the target population for this research. The overall research problem concerns how best to address the challenges of optimising focus and managing risk that is inherent in strategic leadership. Both functionalist and interpretive approaches were applied to produce a rounded understanding of what constitutes leadership focus. The application of a functionalist approach resulted in three primary theoretical hypotheses being derived from the literature, namely, that leadership focus is a function of (1) optimising the balance of focus between external and internal priorities, (2) the fit between the leadership personality type and the organisation type, and (3) the capacity to manage a multiple focus. The interpretation of the responses from the sample of executives participating in the research study yielded a related set of first and second order factors relating to leadership focus that revolve around the level of comfort experienced by executives in managing focus in the leadership role. The approach to this research was one of methodological triangulation. A survey-based methodology was employed, containing both quantitative and qualitative questions. The results of the quantitative analysis of the relationship between personality type and leadership focus were contrasted and extended by a qualitative content analysis of the qualitative survey responses. The propositions were tested on a sample of South African executives attending management development programmes run by Wits Business School, University of Witwatersrand, in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. The findings show that Extraverted personality types are more comfortable with the challenges of focus in the leadership role than are Introverted types. In addition, Extraverted, Sensing, Thinking and Judging types experience a greater degree of fit with their organisations than do Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling and Perceiving types. The implications are that in a business environment of ongoing change, market innovation and increasing stakeholder expectations, organisation leaders of all personality types need to develop a greater consciousness of their preferred and less preferred behaviours, and a greater ability to complement their preferred leadership behaviours with less preferred behaviours when necessary, to optimise their leadership focus over time. / Dr. Loius Carstens

Over the course of this thesis, three of Hermann Hesse’s novels will be examined – Demian (1919), Der Steppenwolf (1927), and Siddhartha (1922) – as performative texts in order to demonstrate how Hesse presents a blueprint of ideal paths to personal enlightenment through common themes that flow through his works, such as breaking out, creation and destruction, and Jungian archetypes. These themes will be compared to Nietzsche’s work on the transformation of the soul. Each of these performative texts by Hesse present a unique opportunity, not only to enjoy a masterful tale of such vivid characters, but also a chance for readers to discover for themselves a new access to peace of mind.

Constatant une lente érosion de la place du religieux dans nos sociétés modernes, ainsi qu'une construction - voire un bricolage - d'une foi et d’une pratique religieuses plus individualistes, cette recherche vise à porter un regard psychanalytique jungien sur les manifestations de possessions diaboliques en tant que miroir, s'il en est un, de ces errances religieuses. Quelle place les possessions ont-elles tenue à travers l’histoire des religions chrétiennes? Comment se manifestent et comment sont reçues aujourd'hui les pérégrinations du diable? Est-il possible qu'une lecture jungienne de ces phénomènes nous amène à réaffirmer l'inévitable dissociabilité de la psyché, et comment cette variable pourrait-elle permettre au clinicien de mieux comprendre et appréhender les phénomènes de possession? Ce travail de recherche se présente tout d’abord par une confrontation d’un clinicien à deux cas de possession diabolique dans son bureau, autour desquels s’articulent ensuite plusieurs volets qui permettent d’appréhender, chacun à leur façon, un des aspects des possessions diaboliques : l’aspect historique, psychiatrique, sociologique et enfin le volet plus spécifiquement jungien. Cette recherche se conclut sur un dernier cas clinique de possession à travers lequel l’ensemble des différents volets abordés permet au clinicien d’élaborer différemment la problématique des possessions, ainsi que leur contenu archétypal. / The slow erosion of the place of religion in our modern society is leading to an increasing amount of individualistic faith and self created religious practices. This research is a Jungian psychoanalytic reading of evil possessions as potential signs of religious erring. What place have evil possessions had across Christian history, and how are they manifested and acknowledged today? The Jungian reading of such phenomena might help us discover the central role of psychological dissociation and the influence this variable plays in our comprehension of possessions. This research starts with the presentation of two cases of possessions in the office of a clinician. It is followed by an exploration of different aspects of possessions: historical, psychiatric, sociological and finally a more specific Jungian approach of the problematic. Each aspect, in turn, will elaborate a different way to look at the problematic. It is concluded by a final case of possession through which all various aspects of possession explored will enable the clinician to elaborate a different understanding of the initial cases, including an archetypal exploration.
