THE ROLE OF ATTRIBUTION AND FAIRNESS IN UNDERSTANDING JOB APPLICANT REACTIONS TO SELECTION PROCEDURES AND DECISIONS

ABABNEH, KHALDOUN ISMAIL 12 March 2015 (has links)

Drawing upon Applicant-Attribution-Reaction Theory (AART) and research in the area ofjob applicant reactions, this study clarifies and underscores the influence of attributions on job applicant perceptions and behavioural reactions to staffing procedures and decisions. Overall, applicant attributions were influenced by: (a) experiencing a staffing process that satisfies/violates procedural justice rules; (b) receiving a favourable (selected) or unfavourable (rejected) selection outcome; and (c) receiving an explanation for a selection decision. Results further suggest that applicant attributions, influence applicant perceptions and behaviours. Consistent with AART's predictions, process fairness perceptions mediated relationships between applicant attributions and each of organizational perceptions, recommendation intentions, litigation intentions, job acceptance intentions, and reapplication intentions. Theoretical and practical implications for these findings are discussed.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The Impact of Information Quality of Job Descriptions on an Applicant's Decision to Pursue a Job

Leung, Harry January 2007 (has links)
Job descriptions are one of the major mechanisms that organizations use to convey job and company information to job applicants. Consequently, job descriptions play a major role in the recruitment process to attract job candidates. However, it is unclear whether the quality of a job description influences a job applicant’s decision making. It is in the organizations’ interest to understand this phenomenon to make better decisions on how to present job descriptions in order to achieve qualified applicants and a desirable applicant pool size. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the impact of the quality of information of job descriptions on a job applicant’s decision to pursue a job. A model is developed to quantify job descriptions. The developed model contains three axes: i) x-axis – job description components, ii) y-axis – information quality dimensions, and iii) z-axis – job industries. This investigation analyzed 127 job descriptions for students majoring in accounting at the University of Waterloo to determine the relationship between the qualities of different components of the job descriptions with the corresponding number of applications. The results of this investigation suggest that information quality has a positive impact on job applicants’ decision to pursue a job. In addition, information quality has different magnitudes of impact for jobs that have similar organization reputation or geographic location. Future research is recommended to analyze other information quality dimensions by using a similar experimental approach as the one used in this thesis.

Legal limits on the employer's freedom of choice in recruiting and selecting employees / Vusumuzi Francis Mthethwa

Mthethwa, Vusumuzi Francis January 2013 (has links)
Under common law an employer enjoyed complete freedom of choice when recruiting and selecting employees. An employer had unfettered discretion in recruiting and selecting employees. There were no legal restrictions on the prerogative of the employer to appoint employees. Developments in labour law have, however, gradually diminished the employer's freedom of choice during the recruitment and selection process. The Employment Equity Act No. 55 of 1998 and the Code of Good Practice on the Integration of Employment equity into Human Resource Policies and Practices, 2005 as· well as impending labour legislation impose limitations on the employer's freedom of choice during the recruitment and selection process. The remaining problem therefore is: What is the extent of the limitations on the employer's freedom of choice in the recruitment and selection of employees? The study will be conducted by means of a literature study of relevant books, journal articles, statutes, case law and internet sources relating to restrictions which are placed by legislation and case law on the employer's freedom to choose employees during recruitment and selection. This research therefore investigates the extent to which developments in labour law have eroded the prerogative of an employer to appoint employees. This investigation will help clarify the limits within which an employer has to exercise its choice of an employee during recruitment and selection. / LLM (Labour Law), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2014
