An exploratory study on the influence of the own-race bias on the serial position effect in facial recognitionGouws, Erik Petrus 27 September 2010 (has links)
The research aimed to explore the potential occurrence of the serial position effect and the own-race bias in facial recognition, and to explore whether these two socio-cognitive psychological phenomena had any influence on each other. Specifically, the researcher suggested that other-race facial recognition will show diminished U-type serial position curves in comparison to own-race facial recognition U-type serial position curves. This was done through a quasi-experimental design, testing 48 participants from an environmental consulting and ground engineering firm in Midrand, Johannesburg. Twelve (12) sets of slides showing either 5 black or 5 white faces were presented to participants, the sequence of faces was randomised and then displayed again to participants. Participants had to identify the original position in which the face was displayed (forcing a serial reconstruction task). Results yielded a U-type serial position curves for overall recognition, with a statistically significant effect for own-race bias effect. Specific interactions indicated that recognition for own-race facial stimuli exhibit clear serial position effect trends, whilst recognition of other-race facial stimuli recognition show increased recognition for the first, middle and last faces in a set. The researcher suggests that the results within this study could be attributed to the effect of an attentional primacy gradient within the Serial Information Processing model. However, further studies are required to eliminate numerous other confounding factors which may have played a role in the study. The results of this research have implications for the judicial system, in which false eyewitness identifications have profound consequences. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Psychology / unrestricted

Analysis of calendar effects and market anomalies on the Johannesburg Stock ExchangeAtsin, Achiapo Jessica Lisette January 2015 (has links)
This study sought to empirically investigate the existence of calendar effects and market anomalies on the JSE using monthly and daily closing prices of the ALSI, Top 40, Mid Cap and Small Cap index; as well as, daily closing prices on the Value, Growth and Dividend Plus index during the sample period 2002 – 2013. The anomalies analysed are the January effect, the weekend effect, the size effect, the value effect, and the dividend yield effect. The empirical analysis uses a number of MSAR with a different number of regimes and lag orders. The results from the investigation of the January effect show the non-existence of the January effect and the value effect on the JSE during the periods 2002 – 2013 and 2004 – 2013, respectively. However, the weekend effect was found significant in the Mid Cap and the Small Cap index, and the size effect was also found significant during the same period 2002 - 2013. Finally the results from a Granger causality test concluded that there is a relationship between the returns on the Dividend Plus index and the ALSI, effectively proving the existence of the dividend yield effect on the JSE between 2006 and 2013. Additionally, the anomalies found imply the opportunity for investors to make returns above buy-and-hold.

Die gebruik van ontwikkelingsiftingskale vir gemeenskapsverpleegkundeGross, Elizabeth Johanna 16 September 2014 (has links)
M.Cur. (General Nursing) / Child development is a subject that is increasingly becoming the focus of discussion. The interest in this subject, however dates back to the twenties when Arnold Gesell started researching this field. Over the years scales were developed to make the measurement of the level of child development easier. The community health nurse should have a thorough knowledge of the use of child development scales. This will enable her to identify, diagnose and refer possible cases of retarded development found at healthy baby and toddler clinics. During this investigation the use of the child development scales by community health nurses, within the municipal boundries of Johannesburg, is evaluated. It was found that a lack of time during normal clinic hours, elaborate record-keeping systems, differences in community priorities, the training of community health nurses in the use of these scales, as well as the ignorance on parents regarding child development, influence the way in which the child development scales are used for community health purposes.

Afrikaans vir akademiese doeleindesRoets, Ninon 26 May 2014 (has links)
D.Litt. et Phil. / The main concern of this thesis is language for academic purposes, a sub-division of language for special purposes, as applied to the course Voorbereidende Afrikaans at the Rand Afrikaans University. The first problem to overcome was that of designing a test for the selection and classification of students into three classes: those who would not gain entrance into the University; those who would be compelled to do the course and those who would be exempted from the course. Based on the insights gained from literature, the doze test, combined with a paragraph was decided upon as the best instrument for measuring the students' language proficiency, this being the desired outcome of such a test. All the restrictions and limitations inherent in the idiosyncratic circumstances surrounding the test were taken into consideration and the doze test was found to be best suited to the situation and the academic requirements. Various models of language teaching were discussed and the conclusion was reached that the approach best suited to the course would be an eclectic approach including elements of the functional-notional syllabus, the communicative approach and Krashen's Input Hypothesis, using an interactive, task-based methodology. Studies indicated that such a course should also include study skills in order to equip students for academic study. A needs analysis, using Richterich and Chancerel's (1977) model, was done and the greatest need was found to be in the areas of listening comprehension and the acquisition of vocabulary. From the results of the tests there also appears to be a need to pay attention to syntax in general. A number of comparable courses were studied to find possible models upon which such a course could be based and many useful ideas were gleaned, which lead to the compilation of a syllabus for Voorbereidende Afrikaans.

The relationship between adjustment and academic achievement of standard seven pupilsDick, Margaret Leslie 12 August 2014 (has links)
M. Ed. (Educational Psychology) / There is a growing concern for the number of children who drop out of school before completing their matriculation examination successfully. The increase in technological development and the creation of new and more demanding job opportunities requires a highly skilled workforce. Since underachievement retards the development of manpower, it implies that each pupil should be guided to reach his highest possible niveau. The factors affecting scholastic achievement are multidimensional, but one that has been minimally researched, is adjustment and the way in which inter- and intrapersonal relationships affect the scholastic achievement of pupils. This study was undertaken to determine the relationship between adjustment and different levels of academic achievement. The method of research is twofold. A literature study constitutes the first part in which definitions of adjustment and achievement are related to the development and learning of the adolescent in personal, home, social and formal relationships. This is followed by an empirical study on relational components of adjustment which are applied to achievers, overachievers and underachievers who are identified by means of a regression analysis.

Bridging the divide: a creativity hub in Alexandra’s Marlboro Gautrain precinctPinto, Miguel Faria Rocha 13 March 2014 (has links)
M.Tech. (Architectural Technology) / Alexandra's Far East Bank, formerly an apartheid buffer zone, is caught up in a reactive process by government to provide both housing and public transport. This process has resulted in a segregated relationship between the Marlboro Gautrain Station and the adjacent Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) housing scheme. The station is completely cut off from the immediate community by a perimeter fence with 24-hour security. This further entrenches the division between the Gautrain commuters and surrounding community. This forced physical relationship sets up an opportunity to design and create a space that aims to straddle the current socioeconomic gap. After on-site investigation and research, a This project would be the first catalytic response to the City of Johannesburg’s Regional Spatial Development Framework (RSDF) for Region E (CoJ 2009/10: 149). Die wedersydse belewenis van die interaksie tussen die persoon na aan die ernstig siek pasiënt en die verpleegkundigeHarms, Gerda Ida 02 April 2014 (has links)
M.Cur. / The aim of the intensive care nurse is to give quality nursing to the critically ill surgical patient within the context of the family, as set out in her scope of practice. Various factors, however, affect the intensive care nurse's actions so that she does not achieve the aim. The persons close to the critically ill patient and the intensive care nurse form part of the patient's social external environment. Both of them are therefore important when facilitating health in the critically ill patient. The aim of this study is to explore and describe the experience of mutual interaction between the person close to the critically ill patient and the intensive care nurse and subsequently to create guidelines with regard to the intensive care nurse's handling of the person close to the critically ill patient during the patient's stay in an intensive care unit. The study is done by means of an exploratory, descriptive and contextual design by using the phenomenological method of interviewing. The participants were selected by purposive sampling according to selection criteria and represent various cultures. Nine persons close to the critically ill patient and six intensive care nurses comprised the participating population.
