Pit House Revival: An Exercise in Composition

Carricaburu, Paul Gaston 15 June 2022 (has links)
Composition is an approach to "art through structure" (Dow, 1997). Following Arthur Wesley Dow's work, Composition 1997, this thesis consists of a series of photographic and architectural exercises, demonstrating each of Dow's elements and principles of composition. Though Dow does not define his work as theory nor go to any length to establish one, he strongly advocates for training in the fundamentals of composition. Oneness in art is the study of synthetically related spaces across an array of disciplines. This is the main idea behind what this work has come to call Dow's Theory of Oneness. That composition as a structural approach to the space-arts can act as a Rosetta stone, giving artists a broad spectrum of discipline, being "at once architects, sculptors, decorators and picture-painters" (Dow, 1997). / Master of Architecture / Composition in the most general sense is the study of what something is made of. In what Dow refers to as the space-arts, painting, sculpting, drawing, architecture and even music are all arts in which space is the primary medium being influenced to form a composition. Dow's ways of creating harmony consist of three elements and five principles that greatly influence how a work of art is built up. Study of these ways of creating harmony leads to an appreciation for art, beauty, and the splendor of nature. It is only through this act of appreciation that a composer finds harmony (Dow, 1997). In a sense, composition of fine art is seeded in appreciation and flowers with a oneness.

Balancing the Scales: Healthy Food Policy and Future Healthcare Costs

Levin, John Clark 01 January 2011 (has links)
Over the past four decades, obesity in the United States has risen to record levels. Co-morbid conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and stroke will impose over twenty trillion dollars of economic burden over the next two decades. More than half that sum will be direct medical expenses. Under current entitlement programs, governments, and ultimately taxpayers, will be responsible for about 43 percent of that. Even with all this spending, millions of lives will be cut short. Dietary factors are largely to blame. This thesis explores how policy interventions to encourage healthy diet and discourage healthy diet can be projected to affect future healthcare spending. It assesses six dietary factors to determine whether there is sufficient research to determine how much economic disease burden they will impose. Among those for which such research exists, the thesis estimates the cost-effectiveness of interventions such as education, subsidies, taxes and legislative bans.

Silva, Beloni Gomes da 01 February 2013 (has links)
Much time has passed until the man began to realize that all development brings besides comfort, practicality and convenience significant impacts to nature. In this scenario, the development of electronics, even considered a development mechanism "clean" elements contributes highly harmful to the environment. This study aims to give an overview of the relationship of administrative activities with respect to the purchase of computer equipment, disposal and management of waste electronic computer at the Federal University of Santa Maria. With the expansiveness of academic activities in the institution comes the need to purchase new electronic equipment and the constant exchange of old models, motivated by the installation of new laboratories, and the demand for computers with more processing capacity to meet the evolution of software, inevitably generate the generation of a large amount of electronic waste. Disposal of these wastes causes need if available forms of storage as well as a proper disposal of these wastes where the institution needs to present the academic community that forms one correct way of managing these wastes can serve as a model for the entire society because junk mail is a problem for all of us.

Space Debris and the BRICS countries: The role of international Environmental Law.

Logday, Ayesha January 2019 (has links)
Magister Legum - LLM / Environmental Law is at the forefront of the global community and environmental protection and conservation is regarded as of the utmost importance.1 Outer Space is a unique, limited, and valuable resource. Outer space allows states to utilise thousands of satellites for research, national defence, and communications. At the inception of space law, only a few states dominated space activities and all human space activities were so challenging that nearly any method seemed acceptable for placing objects in outer space, currently more countries have space industries and launch capabilities

Introduction of the Academic Factor Quality Minus Junk to a Commercial Factor Model and its Effect on the Explanatory Power. An OLS Regression on Stock Returns / Introduktion av den Akademiska Faktorn Quality Minus Junk till en Kommersiell Multi-faktormodell och dess Påverkan på Förklaringsgraden. En OLS-regression på Aktieavkastningar.

Annink, Marit, Larsson, Rebecca January 2019 (has links)
The ability to predict stock returns is an ability many wish to possess, and in an accurate way as possible. For many years there has been an interest in the field of factor models explaining the returns, with the aim to increase the explanatory power. This is however a complex business since the factors and their improvement of explanatory power need to be significant. Now and then, researchers come up with new significant factors that have a positive impact on models. AQR Capital Management is no exception to this, since they in 2013 presented the factor Quality Minus Junk, earning significant risk-adjusted returns. This bachelor thesis work within mathematical statistics and industrial engineering and management, aims to investigate whether or not the commercial multi-factor model used at the public pension fund Fjärde AP-fonden will be improved by adding the factor Quality Minus Junk, in the sense of explanatory power. The method used is mainly based on multiple linear regression and three three-year time periods are studied ranging from 2010 to 2018. The results from this thesis work show that the QMJ factor provides significant increases in explanatory power for one of three time periods, the most recent period 2016$-$2018. However, since the results are inconclusive further studies are needed in order to better understand how to interpret the results and whether or not to include the QMJ factor in the model.

Laurent-Ricard, Eric 09 December 2011 (has links)
The growing use of email in dematerialized exchanges, for both businesses and individuals, and the increase of undesirable mails, called "spam" (junk emails) generate a significant loss of time of manual processing And a lack of confidence both in the information transmitted and the issuers of such messages. What are the solutions to restore or build confidence in these exchanges? How to treat and reduce the growing number of «spam»?Existing solutions are often cumbersome to implement or relatively ineffective and are primarily concerned with treating the effects of "«spam»", forgetting to analyze and address the causes. The identification, if not the authentication, of the sender and recipients, is a key point to validate the origin of a message and ensure the content, as well as a significant level of traceability, but it is not the only one, and the basic mechanisms, themselves, of the email system, more precisely in terms of communication protocols are also at stake. The content of this thesis will focus primarily on opportunities related to changes in some Internet protocols, in particular SMTP, implementation specifications rarely used, and the tools and possible methods to ensure the identification of parties in a simple and transparent way for users. The objective is to define, firstly a methodology for using the mail with reliability and confidence, and secondly to draw the logical foundations of client and server programs for the implementation of this methodology.

Possibilities of Scrap Material Utilisation for Teaching Arts at Elementary Schools

NOVÁKOVÁ, Jitka January 2011 (has links)
The Thesis is focused on the interconnection of Arts and Environmental Education as a possible way for teaching elementary school children both the sensitive relation to nature and the conscious environmental behaviour. Junk-art, a phenomenon of environmental arts, is introduced in the theoretical part of the Thesis. In this part of the Thesis, there are also theoretical basis of Arts and Environmental Education, as they are embodied in the Framing Program of Education and the analysis of possible areas for utilisation of scrap materials within intermediate and experimental activities in Arts at elementary schools. In the conclusion of the theoretical part of the Thesis, there is a list of books available in the Czech market which deal with possibilities of waste media utilisation for the development of creative activities of pupils. In the practical part of the Thesis, there are some results and reflexions of the implementation of my own set of Arts lessons with utilisation of scrap materials which I gave in the third, fourth and fifth grades at a traditional rural school in Stará Říše.
