This submission is an analytical report that chronicles and evaluates the internship experience of Gina Charbonnet at KID smART an arts nonprofit organization, in New Orleans, LA. The internship period commenced November 15, 2001 and concluded March 30, 2002.

This collection of creative non-fiction essays is written from the perspective of a Protestant Christian church leader’s daughter emerging into adulthood and independence. She labors to define her relationship with God, family, and friends and to determine the complicated, but pervasive role of faith in her life while coping with depression and anxiety; a brain aneurysm and malformation among other health problems; working in an all-male environment in the Houston Chronicle Sports department; the death of her grandparents; the death of a Muslim friend in a murder-suicide shooting; and her troubled relationship with an agnostic friend. Although she expresses her doubts in each scenario, she identifies purpose in the trials and accepts the challenges that accompany being the child of the priest.

The following thesis explores the conditions of possibility for remix culture through the work of Paul D. Miller, a.k.a. Dj Spooky that Subliminal Kid. Beginning with the impact and vertigo of Dj Spooky's language and practice, it explores the reciprocal relation of media to language in the construction of the proper (property) and the author (authority). The context of Dj Spooky as a conceptual artist and the material of his book, Rhythm Science , provides the setting and scenario for extended readings of the paradoxes and cultural effects of remix culture, including the relation of writing to djing, practices of incorporative media, tactics of digital email, combat over copyright, and the sampling of the archive. The formalization of these effects is outlined by writing in-between the theories of Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida. This formalization signals the advent of the network over the territory, the form over the content, the formal over the expressive (while nonetheless recognising the distinction, persistence and difference of these terms). It argues that remix culture regenerates and redefines the parameters of the author and the proper through technological and political forces that nonetheless retain their structures of power. The conduit and context of this formal, paradoxical transformation are the cultural forces of global and digital networks, which is here defined as the "oceanic network."

From fall 2003 to spring 2004 I served as an intern producing ART JAM, a free, interactive children's arts festival for KID smART. KID smART is a nonprofit 501 c.3. organization created to teach positive life skills to underserved children through hands-on arts activities in New Orleans, LA. ART JAM is an interactive children's arts festival presented by KID smART. The festival serves as a major public relations campaign and serves to advocate that the arts are important in the lives of all children. This report is broken into 5 chapters and details the activity of producing ART JAM 2004. Chapter 1 is an introduction KID smART and ART JAM including its mission, history, organizational structure, funding, and programs. Chapter 2 is a description of my internship including tasks and responsibilities. Chapter 3 is an exploration of organizational issues including strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities. Research and explanation of "Best Practices" along with recommendations will be discussed in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 analyzes the short and long term effects of the internship on KID smART and ART JAM.

abstract: Measurements of the response of superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) devices to changes in various forms of input power can be used for characterization of the devices and for probing device-level physics. Two niobium nitride (NbN) superconducting nanowires developed for use as SNSPD devices are embedded as the inductive (L) component in resonant inductor/capacitor (LC) circuits coupled to a microwave transmission line. The capacitors are low loss commercial chip capacitors which limit the internal quality factor of the resonators to approximately $Qi = 170$. The resonator quality factor, approximately $Qr = 23$, is dominated by the coupling to the feedline and limits the detection bandwidth to on the order of 1MHz. In our experiments with this first generation device, we measure the response of the SNSPD devices to changes in thermal and optical power in both the time domain and the frequency domain. Additionally, we explore the non-linear response of the devices to an applied bias current. For these nanowires, we find that the band-gap energy is $\Delta_0 \approx 1.1$meV and that the density of states at the Fermi energy is $N_0 \sim 10^{10}$/eV/$\mu$m$^3$. We present the results of experimentation with a superconducting nanowire that can be operated in two detection modes: i) as a kinetic inductance detector (KID) or ii) as a single photon detector (SPD). When operated as a KID mode in linear mode, the detectors are AC-biased with tones at their resonant frequencies of 45.85 and 91.81MHz. When operated as an SPD in Geiger mode, the resonators are DC biased through cryogenic bias tees and each photon produces a sharp voltage step followed by a ringdown signal at the resonant frequency of the detector. We show that a high AC bias in KID mode is inferior for photon counting experiments compared to operation in a DC-biased SPD mode due to the small fraction of time spent near the critical current with an AC bias. We find a photon count rate of $\Gamma_{KID} = 150~$photons/s/mA in a critically biased KID mode and a photon count rate of $\Gamma_{SPD} = 10^6~$photons/s/mA in SPD mode. This dissertation additionally presents simulations of a DC-biased, frequency-multiplexed readout of SNSPD devices in Advanced Design System (ADS), LTspice, and Sonnet. A multiplexing factor of 100 is achievable with a total count rate of $>5$MHz. This readout could enable a 10000-pixel array for astronomy or quantum communications. Finally, we present a prototype array design based on lumped element components. An early implementation of the array is presented with 16 pixels in the frequency range of 74.9 to 161MHz. We find good agreement between simulation and experimental data in both the time domain and the frequency domain and present modifications for future versions of the array. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Physics 2018

Depuis les années 1950, des chercheurs comme Useem, Pollock, Van Reken et d’autres se sont interrogés sur le sujet des enfants qui ont grandi dans plusieurs pays. Cependant, la grande majorité de ce corpus vise les enfants ayant été scolarisés dans des établissements anglophones même s’il existe de nombreux établissements francophones hors la France. Ce projet vise cette population. Nous nous sommes demandés s’ils faisaient partie d’une double minorité, premièrement la minorité de Nomades Globaux (NG) mais dans cette population s’ils faisant partie d’une minorité francophone de NG. Pour ce faire, nous avons conduit des entrevues semi-structurées avec 12 participants en utilisant un cadre théorique construit autour de l’habitus de Pierre Bourdieu. Bien que nous ne puissions tirer de conclusions générales, il semble que ces NG ne se sentent pas comme faisant partie d’une double minorité.

The following is a book of poetry, born of the chaos in leaving home and discovering loneliness within the confines of my own body. Sustaining a mixed vernacular, that of the rural Midwest, the Bible, medicine, and the strange, this book seeks a sympathy with illness and with those who suffer its symptoms. I drew much upon my childhood in particular the years spent going on rounds with my father at the local hospital.

"Latchkey: A Memoir in Essays" is an essay collection that follows the narrator through her childhood as it relates to being raised a latchkey kid in the 1980s. The lack of published academic studies that follow children through their experience as latchkey kids and into adulthood leaves personal exploration as the primary means through which a child, specifically a young girl, can seek understanding as to how her view of the world develops. Each of the five essays explores issues of autonomy, self-efficacy, sexuality, addiction, and familial bonds. It is through her reflection of specific events – the loss of a father to his addictions, caring for a mother in the early stages of dementia, recognizing the trauma of sexual abuse – that she gains a precarious understanding of how she perceives herself, the concept of unconditional love, and the world around her.
