Developing and Validating A KMS Success Model

Many organizations are planning and developing information systems specifically to facilitate and manage knowledge activities. Such systems are referred to as Knowledge Management Systems (KMSs). How to successfully implement KMS is an important issue that has attracted the interest of many pundits. However, KMSs are just beginning to appear in organizations. There is a general scarcity of models and frameworks available for evaluating and guiding KMS success. This study proposes a model for measuring KMS success. An empirical study was conducted to collect data. This data was empirically used to test the proposed research model. This model is derived through an analysis of current practice and outcomes of knowledge management and an intensive review of information system success literature. Five variables, system quality, knowledge/ information quality, valuation of KMS benefits, user satisfaction, and system use, are proposed as dependent variables to evaluate KMS success and their interrelationships are defined and discussed.

With the arrival of the knowledge economy, the management of all enterprises attempt to increase the efficiency of organizing with information management, drive innovation, bring up a new wave of information management. Grow up and circulate the increase of the demand fast with information in the management activity of knowledge, the storing, searching, circulating and sharing of knowledge must be dependent on information science and technology to help, even on the knowledge innovation, information science and technology can also offer the function of deducing, summing up and making up etc., so a lot of enterprises will create knowledge management system while promoting the management engineering of knowledge, regarding KMS as the core of enterprise's knowledge management activity, in order to promote benefit carried on in enterprise's knowledge management activity. This research will regard staff of one international famous semiconductor company as case study, consider it with IS success model which announced by DeLone & McLean (2003) , and Wang Yu-Min (2003)" KMS success model " to try to set up and study the structure, take ' MES ' systematic field as an example, analyse its field demand situation, knowledge of administrative system, is it probe into with actual case relevant enterprise benefit and staff, knowledge of administrative system use to close of connecting with satisfaction to come, appraise from knowledge / information quality, system benefit, use, systematic quality and use satisfaction aspect systematically, and probe into the employee of enterprises to the analysis of using satisfaction of administrative system of knowledge. The research approach adopted in this research is an investigation method of the questionnaire, to verifying according to theory and research hypothesis by using the multiple-regression-analysis. We can get the result from the data that all these major factors incluing knowledge/ information quality, valuation of KMS benefits,system quality, system use has positive effects on the KMS satisfaction.

Action Research to Develop the Knowledge Management System for Full Specification of CSBC

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the suitable practice and model of knowledge management for CSBC through the action progress of developing a prototypical knowledge system intended for management of Full Specification. This study belongs to action research. The experiment field was Basic Design Section of Design Department in CSBC. It targeted at the shipyard¡¦s core knowledge--Full Specification to develop a prototypical knowledge management system of Full Specification. Through reflection-in-action and reflection-on-action in the process of developing system, the problems and dilemmas encountered by each action plan were reflected to seek for solutions and to revise the action plan. Then the knowledge management system was built. From the progress of action plan, it sought for new findings which can be the reference for CSBC to promote knowledge management continuously. The results of this study were as follows: 1) The environment of knowledge management was built by creating the open working platform. And a prototypical knowledge management system of Full Specification was built by learning-from-action. 2) By the participating, planning, learning of practitioners, it was helpful to emerge the future scenario of knowledge management and the common consensus to advance the knowledge management. 3) The model of organization learning and knowledge sharing was found. If the model combined with the knowledge management system, it was helpful to form the procedure of creating knowledge. 4) The reference frame of action research for knowledge management and the driven model of knowledge management for CSBC were developed.

As a result, a wide variety of theories and definitions of knowledge and knowledge management is used in the literature. Irrespective of the theory or definition used, is it recognised that expert knowledge and insight are gained through experience and practice and that it is a key differentiator as an organisational asset. This shift to knowledge as the primary source of value results in the new economy being led by those who manage knowledge effectively. Today’s organisations are creating and leveraging knowledge, data and information at an unprecedented pace – a phenomenon that makes the use of technology not an option, but a necessity. It enables employees to deal with multifaceted environments and problems and make it possible for organisations to expand their knowledge creation capacity. Software tools in knowledge management are a collection of technologies and are not necessarily acquired as a single software solution. Furthermore, these knowledge management software tools have the advantage of using the organisation’s existing information technology infrastructure. Organisations and business decision makers spend a great deal of resources and make significant investments in the latest technology, systems and infrastructure to support knowledge management. It is imperative that these investments are validated properly, made wisely and that the most appropriate technologies and software tools are selected or combined to facilitate knowledge management. The purpose of this interpretive case study is to consider these issues and to focus on an understanding of the key characteristics of a knowledge management system architecture by exploring and describing the nature of knowledge management. Creating Knowledge Management System for project-based organizations

The current study is driven by the growing importance of learning capabilities within organizations. Nowadays an ability to constantly develop and improve based on mistakes and broadly apply successful experience is becoming a strategic competitive advantage in highly competitive business environment. This is even more relevant for project-based organizations, where natural specifics of project activities impose higher requirements in regards to their ability to learn quickly. At the same time, despite the existing number of recommendations there are only rare cases of successful systemic application of knowledge management activities in projectbased organizations. Thus, additional exploration of the topic is required through identification of critical factors that influence implementation process. From this standpoint an exploratory research has been conducted, including an exhaustive literature review and a qualitative case study in a single company, complemented with additional interviews in ten other organizations. The combination of scrupulously summarized theoretical insights from the existing extensive range of academic research and the data obtained empirically resulted in a comprehensive theoretical framework. This framework depicts all the recommended elements that need to be incorporated into a project-based knowledge management system, as well as a list of critical factors, which should be considered while rolling out a system in practice. The current study revealed some new factors, which critically influence the success of project-based knowledge management systems implementation. These new findings are also included into the final framework and supposed to help to eliminate the existing confusion regarding the topic. Therefore, the produced comprehensive framework is highly recommended for practitioners as a starting point for planning their knowledge management system implementations projects. It also suggests further exploratory opportunities.

The technology acceptance of members of public sector for knowledg management

Since People used a lot of information technologies in different societies, no matter private enterprises or public administrations all effort to use the newly information technologies (especially in internet application), to increase the speed and correctness of dealing with information and cost down. For example in enterprise, internet changes the relation between business and business, customer and business, and the competition model between business and business. In government, public administrations used information technologies and communication to redesign the organizations, simply the processing to improve the efficiency and response citizen¡¦s demand immediately. Therefore information technologies change, deal with, disseminate the paths and speed of knowledge. The influence existed not only in enterprises, but also changing the style that government accessed and managed knowledge. Kaohsiung city government pushed the Knowledge Management System. But the rejection of members in organization has huge influence in pushing KM, on the other hand Technology Acceptance Model is a major method in discussing the behavior of information technology acceptance recently. This research reviews some literature about knowledge management, and analysis the IT and knowledge management portal in the members of Kaohsiung city administration to propose the model influence KMS acceptance for an reference base when public sectors plan and build KMS. The research surveies the employees of secretariat of Kaohsiung city government, including the amanuensis in first level administration and schools. We distributed 285 questionnaires and received 137 effective questionnaires. After using LISREL and SPSS 10.0, the foundings of this research is: 1. It is usefulness to use TAM2 to measure the acceptance of knowledge management system. It also proves the acceptance between KMS and general IT system consilient. 2. The difference of population is not signality for the behavior intension of using KMS. 3. It is also not signality between scocial norm and perceived usefulness in this research. 4. Kaohsiung city government has not enough effort in pushing KMS. It must depended on high-up to built knowledge sharing culture in the organization.and practice real knowledge management

Critical Factors of KMS adoption: An Empirical Study

As a result of tough competition in the marketplace and the shift form a resource-based economy to a knowledge-based economy, companies are looking more and more at gaining competitive advantage through managing and maximizing their most valuable asset ¡V knowledge. In line with the increasing need to manage knowledge systems (KMS), which involve the application of IT systems and other organizational resources to manage knowledge strategically, are growing in popularity. Given the fact that it is not difficult to find applications relevant to KMS in organizations, the topic of KMS has not been well explored by researchers and scholars. Besides, even among the limited literature on KMS, there is a scarcity of studies on the empirical perspective of KMS, especially in the area of adoption, which is an important issue of managerial capacity. This research tries to address this gap by studying the adoption of KMS in Taiwanese organizations. Specifically, we want to find the significant factors of the KMS adoption. This study is based on innovative perspective combining with some important factors to mold an integrated model. Three dimensions are involved in, including: (1) Innovative characteristics of KMS: includes relative advantage, complexity, compatibility and cost of KMS (2) Organizational factors: includes IT infrastructure inside organization, employees¡¦ IS knowledge, management support, slack resources and business size (3) External factors: only includes competitive pressure. We try to find out whether there is something critical to adopt KMS. An empirical survey methodology is applied to test the research model and hypotheses proposed in this study. Eight out of nine hypotheses are validated in our research model with Discriminant Analysis. The research result reveals that management support of a firm has the strongest discriminability; on the other hand, competitive pressure also affects the adoption of KMS of a firm strongly. In conclusion all the variables have discriminant power expect relative advantage.

To achieve these goals, experienced and knowledgeable employees as well as a culture appreciating collaborative problem solving and knowledge sharing are essential. The case company realized and promoted the importance of collaborative problem solving and knowledge sharing. Currently, several collaborative problem solving and knowledge sharing activities can be observed in the case company. Although the case company appreciates and creates the culture of collaborative problem solving and knowledge sharing, several challenges remain to be addressed. ¡P Reuse of lessons learned knowledge (or tacit knowledge for short) seldom takes place. ¡P Retention of Lessons Learned knowledge is lacking. ¡P The availability of lessons learned knowledge is a concern. To address the above-mentioned challenges faced by the case company, the purpose of this research is to develop and implement a knowledge management system. Specifically, an lessons learned knowledge repository will be constructed for capturing, retaining and reusing lessons learned knowledge. The goals of the target knowledge management system include facilitating efficient inter- and intra-departmental knowledge sharing and improving the knowledge availability that, in turn, leading to a productivity improvement. Empirical evaluations on the usability of the proposed system will be conducted and analyzed.

Applying Intelligent Agents in Knowledge Management System

The concept of knowledge management has become a critical issue in both academic and practical area. Organizations invest huge resources in knowledge management work in order to maintain long term competitive advantage. Therefore, how to use information technology to support knowledge management in an efficient way is a critical success factor in organizations adopting knowledge management. However, the running effect of knowledge management system does not achieve organizations¡¦ expectancy. The main reason is that knowledge management system is designed for unstable form of knowledge; developing information system in a structural way can not process this abstract knowledge effectively. For the reason, this research applies intelligent agent technique in developing knowledge management system, hoping to make use of intelligent agents¡¦ autonomy, communication ability, adaptability and mobility to raise the efficiency of knowledge management. This research analysis the general knowledge management works in order to find out the general knowledge management requirements. And then, this research also checks which requirements are suitable for intelligent agent to process. After integrating these requirements, this research proposes a complete intelligent agent based knowledge management system framework and a detail definition of each intelligent agent, and a set of message communication protocols between these intelligent agents.
