A informação mais procurada é o significado da palavra (dado por uma explicação, um sinônimo ou um equivalente, correspondente ou tradução). Também explicações breves, como notas culturais sobre a cultura de países cujos falantes se expressam por meio da língua estrangeira (inglês) ajudarão o aprendiz a compreender melhor as palavras e expressões específicas de determinada língua. Algumas palavras e expressões contêm uma carga cultural que os falantes nativos conhecem. Para se transmitir essa carga cultural, isto é, para informar o significado verdadeiro e completo de tais palavras e expressões, não bastam as explicações comuns nos dicionários, simples sinônimos ou equivalentes. Em alguns bons dicionários, explicações mais aprofundadas de palavras e expressões com carga cultural (também chamadas de culture-specific words) encontram-se em diversos lugares: em páginas especiais, em notas culturais junto a determinados verbetes e no interior dos próprios verbetes. Esta pesquisa teve dois objetivos gerais: verificar em dicionários de inglês (monolíngues, bilíngues, impressos e eletrônicos) se eles contêm tais explicações e de que forma são dadas; e verificar se os alunos de inglês conhecem tais explicações, se as procuram e qual sua opinião sobre elas. Na análise dos dicionários percebeu-se que dezoito dicionários impressos apresentam informações sobre a cultura por meio de notas culturais. Também nos dicionários eletrônicos em CD-ROM há informações sobre a cultura sinalizadas por notas culturais, enquanto os dicionários eletrônicos online não oferecem informações culturais suficientes, embora não haja limitação de espaço neste tipo de dicionário. Na pesquisa por questionário, constatou-se que as informações culturais mais procuradas nos dicionários pelos participantes foram os principais feriados americanos e britânicos; música; esporte; culinária; etimologia de algumas palavras; palavras soltas e palavras sinônimas; lugares, construções, instituições e pessoas importantes; marcas famosas; expressões idiomáticas e palavras ofensivas ou gírias. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / Language learners tend to use the dictionary frequently. The meaning of a word is the most popular information (given by an explanation, a synonym or an equivalent/translation). Also brief explanations, such as cultural notes about the culture of countries in which speakers express themselves through the foreign language (English), will help the learner to understand specific words and phrases of a particular language. Some words and expressions contain a cultural background that native speakers know. To transmit this cultural background, that is, to inform the true and full meaning of such words and expressions, explanations, simple synonyms or equivalent words are not sufficient. In some good dictionaries, elaborated explanations of words and expressions with cultural background (also known as culture-specific words) can be found in different places: in special pages, in cultural notes near certain entries or in the entries. This research had two general goals: to check if dictionaries in English (monolingual, bilingual, printed and electronic) contain such explanations and how they are given, and to verify whether English students know such explanations, if they are looking for this kind of information and what they think about it. Concerning the analysis of dictionaries, eighteen printed dictionaries analyzed presented cultural information by means of cultural notes. Electronic dictionaries on CD-ROM also provided cultural information marked by cultural notes, whereas the online dictionaries did not show enough cultural information, albeit there is not limited space in this type of dictionary. As to the questionnaire survey, it was observed that the most sought cultural information by the participants in the English dictionaries was the main British and American holidays, music, sports, cooking, the etymology of some words, single words and synonymous words, places, buildings, institutions and important people, famous brands, idioms and slang or curse words.

However, it has been receiving little attention in language studies. The purpose of this research is to compare the English job interview register with the other English language registers along the five dimensions of variation identified by Biber (1988 et seq.) through Multidimensional Analysis (MDA). To do so, this research is based on Corpus Linguistics (CL) that deals with the collection and exploitation of corpora with the purpose of helping to research a language or part of it. (BERBER SARDINHA, 2000; 2004). The corpus of this study was the Job Interview Corpus (JIC), composed of 40 real job interviews conducted in Germany with native speakers from Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States, totaling approximately 50,000 words. In order to enable MDA, the study corpus, JIC, was grammatically tagged with the Biber Tagger and later processed by the Biber Tag Count, which calculated the frequency of 67 linguistic variables considered in this study. The MDA results showed how the English job interviews of the study corpus, JIC, resemble or differentiate from the other English language registers along the five dimensions of variation (BIBER, 1988 et seq.). Since there are no precedents of studies within the CL devoted to the investigation of English job interviews in a multidimensional analysis, this research intends to fill this gap in the academic field / Em um cenário em que cada vez mais o processo de seleção de candidatos a uma vaga de emprego se torna mais exigente (JOSEPH, 2013), o estudo das entrevistas de emprego em inglês é de grande importância. No entanto, o tema tem recebido pouca atenção nos estudos linguísticos. O objetivo desta pesquisa é comparar o registro entrevista de emprego em inglês com os outros registros da Língua Inglesa ao longo das cinco dimensões de variação identificadas por Biber (1988 et seq.) por meio da Análise Multidimensional (AMD). Para tanto, esta pesquisa se fundamenta na Linguística de Corpus (LC) que se ocupa da coleta e exploração de corpora com a finalidade de servir para uma pesquisa de uma língua (BERBER SARDINHA, 2000; 2004). O corpus de estudo utilizado nesta pesquisa foi o Job Interview Corpus (JIC), composto por 40 entrevistas de emprego reais realizadas na Alemanha com falantes nativos oriundos da Austrália, Estados Unidos, Irlanda e Reino Unido, totalizando aproximadamente 50 mil palavras. A fim de viabilizar a AMD, o corpus de estudo, JIC, foi etiquetado gramaticalmente com a ferramenta computacional Biber Tagger e posteriormente processado pelo Biber Tag Count que calculou a frequência das 67 variáveis linguísticas consideradas neste estudo. Os resultados da AMD demonstraram como as entrevistas de emprego em inglês presentes no corpus de estudo, JIC, se assemelham ou se diferencia dos demais registros da Língua Inglesa ao longo das cinco dimensões de variação (BIBER, 1988 et seq.). Uma vez que não há precedentes de estudos dentro da LC dedicados à investigação das entrevistas de emprego em inglês em uma análise multidimensional, a presente pesquisa pretende preencher esta lacuna na área acadêmica
